LIFE Master AJ: Just a thought / note.

Maybe when you wrote this:
<<Jul-10-11

delete jessicafischerqueen: <AJ> that sucks- sorry you didn't get a chance to participate in the US Open, truly a historic tournament. Don't forget though that you being the babysitter for your daughters is also a blessing, and not in disguise either.

I've seen their photos and they look very happy. I'm thinking you have a lot to do with that.

In the mean time, at least your last two tournaments were successful eh?

To say the least.

One day I, too, want to play in a real chess tournament.>>

... you did not realize what a swell person you were being. Or that you have a kind and thoughtful heart.

Thanks for the good words.

I literally have stopped playing chess the last few days. I was too depressed to play Internet as well.

Your words - while in truth, it did not make it "all better" - it sure did help a great deal.

Thanks for reminding me what is really important. (I am sure my chess appetite will return.)

BTW, I got an e-mail from a young lady at a top college. She provided info, apparently one of her friends follows this website. He read my poem - and showed it to her, she said she liked it a lot.

I know I am no Edgar Allen Poe, but what the heck, who is?

Jul-13-11  kellmano: Hi,

Just stumbled across the third of your Polish chess series on youtube. Very well done.

The Mihaly Vig music is amazing. Have spent half an hour listening to the Werckmeister soundtrack. That is a film I have to see soon.

Jul-13-11  Travis Bickle: Hi Jess here's a short promo clip of Paul McCartney's album which he used the name 'Firemen' for his Electric Arguments CD a few years ago.

Jul-13-11  Travis Bickle: Correction he called himself the *The Fireman and again played all the instruments on the record. Here's a song from that album 'Electric Arguments'.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Kellmano>

<Kellmano> eerily enough, I ripped that video three days ago and stuck it on my desktop- I've been listening looking and weeping at it several times a day. I thought they were paintings, but no- they are photographs by Gregory Crewdson:

According to Wikki Tikki Tavi:

<Gregory Crewdson's photographs usually take place in small town America, but are dramatic and cinematic. They feature often disturbing, surreal events.>

Someone has combined those Crewdson photos- they are in high resolution- with Mihaly Vig's "Old," which was an extraordinarily good idea, as you say.

I urge you to check out <Werckmeister Harmonies>- that's a masterpiece, no other word for it. You can watch it over and over too, because it's a visual poem as much as a narrative film.

Jul-15-11  kellmano: <JFQ> Have got a friend to stick Werckmeister on his Love film list so I can borrow it.

I see I had actually read your comment before I posted the link here, but I had not noticed the authorship. It's a small internet.

When I look at the photos I expect something to move. I may get Vig played at my funeral, just to make sure everybdy cries.

jessicafischerqueen: <kellmano> yes there seems to be a deep sorrow common to much Eastern European art and culture- perhaps born of so many wars, so many catastrophic natural disasters, particularly famines.

At any rate, I find that this sorrow adds a gravitas and depth to this culture that is both authentic and usually "missing" from western pop culture.

The depth is hard won, part of the reason why it is so beautiful, and moving.

jessicafischerqueen: Although I should hasten to add that this sorrow, gravitas, and moving beauty is not absent from western culture.

Gregory Crewdson, of course, is American, though his photography isn't really "pop" culture.

Jul-15-11  Shams: <jfq> Not sure how my forum ever got turned off! It's on again, though I don't anticipate much activity.

To answer your question-- I don't think we've ever played postal chess, no. That must have been some other boy you were favoring with your charms that week. ;) We chatted a bit about B.C. once. I'm from a tiny island in the San Juans, north of Victoria but still a touch south of the border. Growing up we had only aerials and we were within the penumbra of the Vancouver media market, so-- there you go, mystery solved, that's how I know what little I do of the Lower Mainland.
