The passion for playing chess is one of the most unaccountable in the world. It slaps the theory of natural selection in the face. It is the most absorbing of occupations. The least satisfying of desires. A nameless excrescence upon life. It annihilates a man. You have, let us say, a promising politician, a rising artist that you wish to destroy. Dagger or bomb are archaic and unreliable - but teach him, inoculate him with chess.

-- H.G. Wells

Chess-play is a good and witty exercise of the mind for some kind of men, and fit for such melancholy, Rhasis holds, as are idle, and have extravagant impertinent thoughts, or troubled with cares, nothing better to distract their mind, and alter their meditations; invented (some say) by the general of an army in famine, to keep soldiers from mutiny: but if it proceed from overmuch study, in such case it may do more harm than good; it is a game too troublesome for some men's brains, too full of anxiety, all out as bad as study; besides it is a testy choleric game, and very offensive to him that loseth the mate. William the Conquerer, in his younger years, playing at chess with the Prince of France (Dauphine was not annexed to that crown in those days) losing a mate, knocked the chess-board about his pate, which was a cause afterwards of much enmity between them.

--Burton, The Anatomy of Melancholy

Just because many great chess players were obnoxious jerks, doesn't mean that if you're an obnoxious jerk you're a great chess player.

--AgentRgent

You are also a machine, as are Anand, Carlsen, Kasparov, and Fischer. You and the others are just inferior machines. Your idea of beautiful chess is simply faulty chess that is not caught in its faults.

--vsaluki

Alas, before the post mortem the gods have placed the game.

--Phony Benoni

A chess engine is a great antidote to human optimism.

jessicafischerqueen: Heh-- that's pretty funny stuff <keypusher>, thanks for dropping your note in my forum.

As you know, the whole profile is dedicated to <Bobby Fischer> web resources of all kinds, so if you run across anything interesting please let me know OK?

Thanks,

jessicafischerqueen: Ok I fixed the <gutting> now, but although you are correct about "whale" being the right verb, as opposed to "wail"--

I'm going to leave the mistaken version becasue when I read <whaling> all I could think about was <Moby Dick> and I started laughing my guts out.

Also, as "wailing", it could mean the <gnashing of teeth and wailing> of the unfortunate victim who dared contest <Bobby> in the <Winawer>

Jan-19-09  Open Defence: 41.Nd6 has changed the nature of this end game totally, very interesting!!

Phony Benoni: <keypusher> Just for the record, I have pulled together the information I could find in the database about Vilnius 1912 here: Game Collection: Tournament: All-Russian Masters, Vilnius, 1912

Fewer than half the games are available. I'll have to look around and see if I can find anything else.

Jan-30-09  Calli: FYI, 1908 Wiener Schachzeitung is available again on Google.
Feb-01-09  Cactus: I was on the Capablanca-Alekhine World Championship Match (1927) page and you gave a link to some 'who loses the least' numbers. I clicked on it, and instead of what I expected, it was a link to my own forum! I am confused....

  keypusher: <calli> Thanks!

<cactus> Go to page 1 of my forum--there are several posts, otherwise I would have just copied the stats to the Capablanca-Alekhine page.

Thanks also, <Phony Benoni>. I was half-joking about Vilnius 1912, because I knew any game collection would be far from complete. Thanks for all your great collections, and also you statistical compilations in your forum. I know you do them tongue in cheek, but they still manage to be quite interesting.

Feb-07-09  brankat: Hi <kp>!

Have You seen this? A score-sheet of the famous Reti-Capablance game, New York, 1924. You can click on the link right below the sheet for a larger pic, and a better resolution.

Feb-07-09  brankat: Also, I just saw Your post on Tringov-Planinc game page. Here is a link to a cpllection of A.Planinc games (32 games) compiled by <TheAlchemist>.

I particularly recommend:

-- Minic-Planinc ...simply stunning!

-- Vaganian-Planinc

-- Unzicker-Planinc.

-- Bogdanovic-Planinc

-- Smeikal-Planinc

Game Collection: Albin Planinc

Enjoy!

  chancho: <keypusher> A picture of Nuremberg 1896:

http://www.worldchesslinks.net/1896...

The guy seated with the derby hat at the end is Teichmann. The one seated in the middle also wearing a derby hat looks like Winawer. Oh, and Schlechter (who is standing) with Charousek and Lasker to his right is wearing one. The big guy standing in the middle is Marco.

Mar-13-09  suenteus po 147: <keypusher> I'm writing to inquire about something that <Benzol> drew my attention to that you posted on Tarrasch vs Lasker, 1895 <...but what amazes me is that I now have originals of London 1862 (Lowenthal),,,> Would you be interested in reconstructing the London 1862 tournament for <Benzol>'s historical tournament project a number of us have been working on? You did such a terrific job on St. Petersburg 1895/96, so it's within your capabilities :) If you're interested, let me know, I will provide whatever assistance to the project I can.

keypusher: <suenteus po 147> sure, I'd love to...the book has all the games, so any not in the database I could upload.
Mar-15-09  suenteus po 147: <keypusher> That's terrific news! There are still so many tournaments to collect and build, it's always nice to delegate an important tournament to a worthy volunteer :)

Mar-20-09  suenteus po 147: <keypusher: Sorry, suenteus, I am a filthy rotten liar. Lowenthal's book contains only a small selection of the books from the 1862 tournament, without round information or anything. So I won't be able to do that collection, unless I come across a better source. I will do the 1982 P&D tournament -- hopefully I can get started this weekend.> No worries. It was only an opportunity seized based on convenience. I do look forward to London 1982 in lieu of London 1862 :)
Mar-27-09  Shams: Hey <keypusher> I wonder if you would allow me to pick your brain a bit. I'm starting law school in the fall and I have some questions for summer reading. Would you mind shooting me a blank email (my address is in my profile) so I could ask you a couple things? I'd appreciate it.

Mar-31-09  whatthefat: Hey <keypusher>,

Hope you're well. Since I know you're not averse to some statistical analysis of chess, I thought you might be interested in some results I just computed regarding the amount of rating scatter:

Vladimir Kramnik

Of course it was a rather limited analysis, but I think it raises some interesting points nonetheless.
