Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

Three exciting rounds to go ..

  moronovich: Yeah,the plot is thickening.

I think we follow the plot which is orcestrad in Wijk an See :)

Jan-27-11

lostemperor: <moronovich> yes it was drama and plots in Wijk aan Zee yesterday. I visited the winter sea side resort. It was great to be in there. My impressions: Carlsen showed good sportmanship after his loss and Shirov spirit is not broken after yet another loss (he still more than kindly gave an autograph to a friend of mine late evening)! But most anstonishing was the speed in which Nepomniachtchi made his moves. Hardly taking more than a few seconds to think while having an hour more than his opponent who was on increment mode already.

moronovich: <lostemperor> Thank you very much for your report! It must be thrilling to witness it live as you just did.And the speed of Nepo is jawdropping to say the least. (And I would not be surprised if his victory yesterday could mean a new level in his play and performance)And good to hear the sportsmanship of Shirov an Carlsen as they probably are clever enought to realize that there are new movews and tournaments ahead. Yesterday it dawned on me that
I was at a tournament in Aarhus DK the summer of 1997 and there Shipov was a mentor to a young kid.Could it have been Nepo, though he only could have been 7-8 at that time?? It was the open section....I did some googling this morning-but in vain. Are you going tomorrow too ?

Jan-27-11

lostemperor: Well Im not sure if I go there this this weekend. Not that I dont want to! I would like to go to the final peasoup but that is for participants only, both amateurs and professionals. I have let several opportunities pass for some years :(
