Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: <Montreal1666> you made a point with your question. Since the candidates will start about a month later (October 20 according to the Fide site) there should be the possibility for people to post predictions on the candidate matches in the remaining month also (besides there was the posibility to revise your predictions). I will make two categories: the overall category (= worldchampionship + candidates) and candidates only. For the overall category, the predictions of the Topalov - Kramnik match, must of course be posted before that match (September 21). After that candidates matches predictions can still be posted for candidates' only category. I have to see how thing goes but likely only the overall predictions (worldchampionship + candidate matches) will count for the 2006 standings. There then will be a special ranking mentioning on candidates matches predictions .
Jun-03-06  suenteus po 147: <lostemperor> I see lots of preparation for the WC prediction contests, but is there anything more immediate you will be covering, like Biel or Dortmund?
Jun-04-06  iron maiden: Predictions for the Candidates (if the matches take place!)

Aronian - Carlsen 3.5-2.5
Leko - Gurevich 4-2
Ponomariov - Rublevsky 3.5-2.5
Gelfand - Kasimdzhanov 3.5-2.5
Bacrot - Kamsky 3-3 (Kamsky wins tiebreaks)
Grischuk - Malakhov 3-3 (Grischuk wins tiebreaks)
Polgar - Bareev 2.5-3.5
Shirov - Adams 2.5-3.5

The World Championship Match:

Topalov-Kramnik 6.5-5.5

Jun-05-06  TIMER: Current Predictions for the Candidates
<I hope that I get all the match winners right, more than the exact score>

Aronian - Carlsen 3.5-1.5 (Aronian +2)
Leko - Gurevich 3.5-2.5 (Leko +1)
Ponomariov - Rublevsky 3.5-2.5 (Ponomariov +1)
Gelfand - Kasimdzhanov 3.5-2.5 (Gelfand +1)
Bacrot - Kamsky 1.5-3.5 (Kamsky +2)
Grischuk - Malakhov 2.5-3.5 (Malakhov +1)
Polgar - Bareev 3.5-2.5 (Polgar +1)
Shirov - Adams 2.5-3.5 (Adams +1)

The World Championship Match:

Topalov-Kramnik 6.5-4.5 (Topalov to win by +2)

Jun-05-06  Montreal1666: <lostemperor> so at the time of Topalov-Kramnik match you want a set of predictions for the candidates matches as well. And then you want a repeat of the predictions for the candidates matches?

lostemperor: <suenteus po> I will only still do the Dortmund tournament starting end of July.

<Montreal1666> since the candidate matches will start much later then the WC-match, the deadline for those predictions will be the first candidatematch. You should however already have given the Topalov - Kramnik results. If you only give the candidate-matches results, I don't know if it will count for the 2006 standings. It might if it is possible. Some details should be worked out then still.

It could well be the WC-match finish when one of the participants reach 6.5 points. The candidate matches, I think, will last the full 6 games. In case the matches finish when one player reach a decisive lead, something should be worked out. It should not be a major problem (but suggestions are welcome). I'll get back on this a.s.a.p.

lostemperor: Someone happen to know if the candidatematch is finished if a player reach the decisive 3.5 points and the same about the WC-match (6.5 points)?
Jun-05-06

lostemperor: I raised this question also on the Susan Polgar page. If the rule is still unknown in the world I will bring up a solution that makes both prediction scores formats possible.
Jun-05-06  acirce: The current rules say <Each match shall be played over six games and the winner of a match shall be the first player to score 3.5 points or more.>

lostemperor: Thanks <acirce>. So it is saying the candidatematches will be played to the full six games it seems. Do you know if there is also a handbook on the worldchampionshipmatch rulings?

The latest I can find is http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... <the match Topalov-Kramnik will be held over twelve games, with classical time controls. In case of a draw there will be four games with shorter time control – 25 minutes per side. The prize fund of one million dollars will be split equally between the participants, regardless of the outcome of the match. >

It seems to be implying the worldchampionship match will be played for the full twelve games also. So this is what I assume. If this is not the case, I will take the difference of points between two players as data. Btw. in the article it says about a weird rule the loser of the Topalov - Kramnik match has to start from scratch!

Jun-07-06  fxenderby: hi! I've really meant to send you some gift from brazil, man! but I just can't make up my mind on precisely what should I send you.. I thought a soccer jersey should be nice, but then again you can get those things in the netherlands, can't you! do you like soccer at all.. well..
cheers.. and i never forget you said in the hague that the future of chess was between carlsen and karjakin. right now you seem to have hit on the nail!

lostemperor: Yo <fxenderby>! Haven't heard from you since quite a while. Was my mail lost in hyberspace again? :) A soccer jersey sounds cool! Brazil is mostly second favorite in the Netherlands only to the national team of course. What do you think, will Brazil become the 2006 world champion? Well I have a new prediction. Brazil will play the final against Holland (in 2010 for Holland that is)!
Jun-08-06  fxenderby: oh,no.. we can't play the 2010 finals.. you see, we are quite fond around here of something we jokingly call interpretive simmetry, which says that if you take 82's cup (don't ask me why..) as the acme of a kind of a pyramid, you will have simmetrical winners for the cups: 86 and 78, argentina; 90 and 74, germany; 94 and 70, yours truly; 98 and 66 (here it seems that we have an exception, but the point is that these cups have both been won by the organizing country, and in misterious ways, as regards ourselves..); 02 and 62, us again. that means that, as we have won 58, this german cup is already in our pockets.. but that also means, that it's gonna be the end, for a very long time...!

lostemperor: <fxenderby> some interesting facts to know professor! :) That means the Netherlands has a great chance of winning the 2010 cup since we know you guys won't be winning then! Olé Olé Olé Olé.

lostemperor: Interesting facts. Ater two days of worldchampionship football Germany 2006 we already have some.

1. The player with the hardest shot in his leg:

the English goalkeeper Robinson. He manage to hit the futuristic screen high on the stadium, others has try in vain to hit during trainings. Thank God he is only a goalkeeper.

2. The best goalkeeper:

First keeper Kelvin Jack of "Cafe-team" Trinidad Tobago. Although he has not come into action yet, the reserve keeper Hislop made some amazing saves against the Swedes. You can only imagine how good Jack must be :)
