Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: <chessmoron> what happened to your funny avatar?! I did needed a "vacation":) But out of interest, the Tal memorial, do you have any link?

I thought the other avatar cause dizziness.

SwitchingQuylthulg: Thanks for running this contest <lostemperor>! I wonder why the last round brought me so many points, probably some bug in the calculation software? :)

How about the surprise player predictions? Will any ♗-♘-♙-medals be awarded?

lostemperor: <SwitchingQuylthulg> its coming up (I'm just a little short of time today)!
Oct-02-07  TIMER: Thanks lostemperor.

I got two key things right in my prediction:
that Anand would come clear first, and that Gelfand would surprise and share second.

I just got pipped at the post in both the square ranker and the normal, just in the last round! Maybe you should combine the two methods so that I can be the winner!

I put my chessbucks where my mouth is in this Mexico championship, and so am also doing well in the chessbookie game! Two completely different systems corroborated!

Thanks again,
TIMER.

lostemperor: <TIMER> yes you were impressively right especially on Gelfand. There are prizes for best surprise predictions still:)

<I just got pipped at the post in both the square ranker and the normal, just in the last round! Maybe you should combine the two methods so that I can be the winner!> perhaps I should ;-). Anyway I'm glad that the double silver winner of the final standings prediction game of Mexico is leading in the chessgames bookie game now aswell. Proving that the bookie game is not just always luck!:)

lostemperor: The three surprise players of Mexico WCC as can be concluded by the deviation in predictions:

Biggest deviations players
135,Gelfand
89,Aronian
45,Morozevich

(it should be noted that only Gelfand was a positive surprise and Aronian and Morozevich were somewhat disappointing but nevertheless surprising)

<♗-award> for correct prediction on 1st surprise GELFAND 2-3 place: <TIMER> prediction 2-3!

<♘-Award> for best prediction on 2nd surprise ARONIAN 6-7 place (average 6.5): <DCP23> 6, <kellmano> 7, <lostemperor> 5-7 (average 6), <positional genius> 6

<♙-Award> for correct prediction on 3rd surprise MOROZEVICH 6-7 place (average 6.5): <SwitchingQuylthulg> 6-7

good sleuthing!

(I have also looked up the surprise predictions for 2006 tournaments also and will post that later)

Oct-03-07  positionalgenius: Not too bad. Gelfand really surprised me and messed up my predictions...:)

lostemperor: New in the <Hall <of> Fame> are <Ragh>♔ and <amadeus>♔. Usually the winner of the absolute ranker and square ranker are one and the same person. If so they are Double Crown(!) winners but I do not give two <♔>, simply not to get a medal inflation ;). For this same reason I have excluded the annual standings from the medal ranker. Mostly those winners have been winning an annual tournament already! <WannaBe> added two Bronze to his tally and is clearly in the lead (see my profile)!
