Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: Of course above I meant to say <THE FINAL ANNUAL PREDICTIONS' RANKING 2008> instead of 2009. I was thinking too far ahead ;)
Dec-12-08  YouRang: <lostemperor> I have some updated software for you to use. Among other things, it fixes the problem that was created when cg.com changed the post removal text from "kill msg" to "delete".

Do you still use the same email address that you gave me years ago? :-)

As for your predictions, you have two Yues! So which standing will he get? Seventh or tenth?! I suppose the other Yue is Adams (;

Dec-13-08  YouRang: <lostemperor: <Yourang> yes I still use the same email address, so you can send me there!>

Okay, when I get back to work (on Monday), I'll send it.

lostemperor: <YouRang> have you sent the updated software?
Dec-19-08  YouRang: Oops - I'm sorry. I got distracted by work-related matters and forgot to send it to you. I'll put it together today (unless I forget again).

Dumb work-related matters. ;-)

Dec-19-08  YouRang: Okay, I just sent the latest software to your email...

Dec-22-08  YouRang: Did you get a chance to test the new software?

It would be nice to know that it works properly at your site before you go live with the <Final Standing Prediction Contest>. :-)
