Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: The calculating software is not generous with points, so if you were wrong on one or two like Dominguez you might end up in red. These things happens and now to my friend kibitzer and first ever winner of this prediction contest (Corus 2005) and double Gold Medal Winner <suenteus po 147>. A better predictor than me here. He also won Biel 2006 and had a correct match prediction Kramnik vs Topalov which were not included in the Hall of Fame. I’m sure he’ll be back!;)

lostemperor: SQUARE RANKER (squared deviation of prediction)

<Stonehenge> also won this! There will be no extra medals rewarded (if the winner is one and the same person)~. The other medal spots are the same ads in the Absolute Ranker! There seems to be a big representation of Dutch medalist in the Biel 2008 contest .. Gold, Bronze!

Stonehenge: Wheeeh, finally I win something! Funny thing is, my Chessbookie bets didn't work out at all, except for the last round.

lostemperor: There were some problems since I forget to follow <YouRang>s advice to log out first, so that the word "delete" is gone. When I did, the software did not delete the old input.

In other words the deviations are about doubled since almost everyone is calculated twice..

Aug-01-08  YouRang: Thanks <lostemperor>, and congrats to the winners.

I see that my plan of having Onishuk finish 2nd behind Carlsen, and Bacrot finishing last didn't work out so well. :-p

Aug-01-08  whiteshark: <It's a ♖ !!> My first medal here!! :D

Thank you <lostemperor> for running again the final standing prediction contest.
