Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: I planned to skip the annual standings from this year. It has served me and <cu8sfan> well and is a good a system as others but maybe it is better to have one result system (medals) instead of two or more. It is not final yet:) I did plan to keep the surprise players rankings.
Nov-16-09  chessmoron: Ha Ha! I was pleasantly surprised by this win. Thank you <lostemperor> for running this contest.
Nov-16-09  YouRang: <lostemperor: Van Wely last?? (;>

Yes!

You may recall that I took a little flack for picking Svidler to finish last in the Tal Memorial.

He would have too, except that Leko and Morozevich both pulled off dramatic last-round losses to win the race to the bottom. :-\

lostemperor: <YouRang> After a quick look at the 2010 Corus list, I think there is an obvious choice of who is going to finish last. It is not Van Wely (nor any of the bottom three seeds). I will get back on this! :)

Ahem. Was that 'flack' from me? Sounds like something I might have said ;)

Anyway, there are positively no excepts, no ifs, no buts, no could-haves, no would-haves, and no should-haves about it, period. Svidler has never, EVER, finished last ANYWHERE, he did NOT finish last this time, and he NEVER will in the future.

lostemperor: Ooh, I made a mistake. On biggest surprise player <IVANCHUK> corbulo has an average prediction of 3 also and not 2.5 as I put it. So that means a five way tie for the best prediciton on Ivanchuk! If there was a tie-braker <NakoSonorense> would have the highest best prediction on this positive upset. A first prestigeous prize still for him!:) But all five are equally close..

♗-AWARD for best prediction on Major Upset

Many thanks <lostemperor:> for once again running the best and most popular prediction contest. To do this in your own time for the pleasure of others is altruism at it's best. GREAT WORK!!!!

You just finished on the bubble (as they say in poker). Still a great result.

Once again, many thanks!!!!
