Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

moronovich: Wauw ! So you were there in real !?
Sounds great. When was it, if I may ask.And did you play in the same hall as the big guns, or ?

To me Wijk,Corus,Tata is the best tournament of the year - needlessly to say there should be more "Wijks" during the year.13 rounds is far more suited for drama and also a more fair winner IMO.
And more Ambers too = chessheaven ;)

lostemperor: <moronovich> yes I played in the same hall as the top guns in chess around the late 90s! The first time, I was too low ranked to be in the same hall since there was so many participants. But later I was. Besides there is a participants stop. The first who enlist get in and almost all in the main hall. It is like a big gym hall with carpet. The GM are on a stage behind a low wooden "fence" so you cannot just walk into their area but you can come pretty close. Of course sometimes you can see them in the café, local bars or restaurants in the village at night! :)

lostemperor: Hi <YouRang> Im glad to do a prediction contest again. It was long past the last time. I certainly hope to do more this year although Linares 2011 is only 6 participants this year and perhaps more suitable for your prediction contest than in this forum.
