"Play the board AND the man ! ".
But mostly the board.
Was born in Elsinore,Denmark,1953.And I am still proud of it.As I hope everyone is proud of hers/his startingpoint.

In many aspects life and chess do mirror each other IM experience. As science and belief goes hand in hand.So many "rules of thumbs" and many "exceptions" from the rule. I do agree with Bent Larsen who once said that someone who cannot contain a paradoxe is not using the full capacity of his brain.Actually I am convinced that there are no parodoxes, but perspectives which are more bright or flexible than others...

Though some obviously are borned under more easygoing circumstances than others,I will second our esteemed fellowkibitzer <zarg> who underlines that "luck" is also somehing that we create ourselves. Ourselves, but also together IM experience.
I try to live my life as if Jesus or Buddha knocked on the door , I would wellcome them as friends . And if they didn´t show up, it would be fine anyway.

Sep-03-19  achieve: Yep-- ...Nc6 is busted. Kasparov and Ivanchuk play a6 before ...e6 all of the time, the Keres attack being too powerful, and after g5 black has to play ...h6, after which Kaspy and co scored quite a few points, still...!!!

So the Scheveningen is quite well, if updated.

I have to say that analysing the Scheveningen was very enjoyable and I expect not for you to align with me. Just was posting some of the play that captured me back in the day, and taken to today. Your question prompted me.

Thanks and be well. chess is still my favourite passtime.

Sep-05-19  achieve: Morning <moro> - has the headache left the building? I am battling some intestinal problems but it appears to be better now...

I was thinking what's in a name, and we will never be able to replace words by numbers, but I think what is left of the Scheveningen in the 21st century, is the "scheveningen set-up" - with d6, a6, e6, and h6, in that order, and since ...e6 simply allows the Keres Attack, ...h6, and not ...Nc6, must be played to deal with g5. Anish Giri recently won with this set-up and explains in a video, that one wrong move order, one tempo, decides win or loss for either side, and that you have to know all the details of that. Figuring it out OTB is pretty much undoable.

The last player that I could find who played the authentic Scheveningen (no ...a6) was Ulf Andersson, it's the B81 in the database.

Btw, there is a formidable game played between Keres and Najdorf, back in 1955 in Sweden, that you ought to see.

But of course you would need to be completely free from head-ache, or any ache for that matter... ;)

When I put on my research boots I usually go all the way, which is the whole point of research to me. But yeah, the Scheveningen deserves that, for people like you and me I suppose.

My goal for this weekend is to play a few test games online vs Stockfish with the Scheveningen set-up, to put my findings to the test.

HAO KANOPI (I made that up ;))

  moronovich: Morning <achieve> !

Listening to "Once upon a time in the west".My favourite of all times and the main theme could cover my funeral.Like in the movie. We are loners and we gather, someting happens, and then we are gone.Perhaps for other pastures. And perhaps we meet again.

Yes the headache has left the building :)But it was a long one.Standing ovations when it vanished. I am shure you know the experience !?

I have no board and pieces at hand(they are down in the basement) so I can not go deeper into your findings in our beloved Scheveningen, but I am happy to recognize that you got (is getting) something of value from the journey.Openings are often like neighbours communicating with each other.

I am curious to see the result of your test games. In a perfect setting you would be the one who gave new life to it !?…

We could call it "Station",like the men in Once Upon..."

HAO KANOPI---all the way and today.

Sep-07-19  achieve: Hi <Moro> - I may be off line for a few days - but you are right in that I at an advanced age see things I did not see at all, one being that the Scheveningen defence is one of the sharpest around, and that Kasparov for good reason amended by playing ...a6 prior to ...e6. The ...b5 thrust must be initiated asap, given the Keres Attack on the other side.

Once upon a time, indeed...

Sep-10-19  virginmind: Hi <moronovich>, looks like we're going to play a football game against each other, in a couple of hours, in Denmark nonetheless! Good luck! ;)
Sep-10-19  virginmind: Ah, 2-0 already!... :( I didn't mean to take my good luck wish literally :)
Sep-11-19  virginmind: Final score 2-1, but with a last minute penalty defended by your goalkeeper.

I hope you are fine, <moronovich>. Have you seen the match?

All the best!

moronovich: Hi dear <virginmind> ! No I didn´t see the match but like the result :)

Fighting a headache today and something with my nose, but trying to stay positive and looking forward to the vuelta.Especiallt tomorrow with a big mountain stage. It is a bit like travelling myself !

And I am very glad to hear you are free from the symptones and I keep all my fingers crossed. It sounds like a fine little trip you had together the other day.

Will watch the World Cup,but first when the Vuelta is over and there are less players, though I find it quite charming with so many contestants !

Take care and enjoy with all my best wishes.

Sep-22-19  virginmind: It's been a while...hi <moronovich>, yesterday we've been to the place of my (very) early childhood years, Brehuiesti, a small village north of Romania. That's where my grand parents (mother's line) lived for quite some time and I was spending my summers (I didn't have a holiday simply because I was not in school yet). The house itself is deserted (my grandparents died, house in latter years got to a family member who is out of country for now) but we managed to take a look inside and its surroundings thanks to another distant family member who lives nearby, ocasionaly takes care of the premises and let us in. It was sort of touching, although I remembered very little from those days. We also visited Botosani, a quiet and rather cute town nearby. Weather was great, although a bit cold.

We arrived home in the evening, a tad tired. I've noticed in the past years I seem to tire more quickly as compared to, say, 7 or 10 years ago. I wonder why, do you think age could be a reason to this? I wouldn't think so, as I was always convinced that age doesn't (seem) to have any sort of effect on me, I usually kept having the same stamina and everything was more or less fine. Sure, a headache from time to time, maybe a bit of cold, but these are normal and temporary. And now, all of a sudden, tireness. Hm...I should investigate a bit the issue. Tireness shouldn't be a part of this world, what do you think? At least not at 55.

Other than this, Nisi is out of the World Cup, and today are the tie breaks of 4th round. Some big names are out, but I guess this is part of life's occurings. "Here today, gone [home] tomorrow"...

And what about you? Does North Sea air begin to change already? I've seen on Ventusky on Friday that a certain storm/huricane in northern Atlantic was raising waves of 13.2 metres hight. Did you ever witness waves that high in your travels accross the seas?

Hugs

moronovich: good evenig my dear <virginmind> !

As always a great pleasure to hear from you.And also I have laid low,due to a kind of colon pressure, which is better today-so I better answer you right now :)

I could almost feel the atmosphere in your grand parents house. And understand it was touching you.I tried the same back in 88 and it was big and moving experience. All these memories coming to life.It was litterally(almost)like yesterday.Such a privellege to have had these wonderful people in my life !

They were the loveliest people one could wish for and an excellent buffer to my mothers rather turbulent 2 marriages.I am eternal gratefull to these two people.

About your tiredness : it can very well be a natural process. It happens not seldom around 55,or so.And besides from "age"in it self, you may well also have been under big pressure lately… But you may very well compensate with all those skills you have learned till now,so the bottom line may be fine !... But perhaps someone who could check if you need some vitamines or such !? .E.g. D-vitamines seem to help me during the autum-winter.Yoga or pilates are also energy boosters.

I do remember when I was younger and always thought that age (whatever that is) wouldn´t keep me from being still young. And that was the right attitude at that time-but some decades later by now-it is different.Merely feeling my mortality and fragileness, which it takes time and process to cope with, also because it is such a contrast to all those powers of opposite directions which still are within me.Many kids and young men inside and a fresh spirit to boot. Quite some work to build those bridges.

Not so much energie on the chess, this time, but there is a match in Copenhagen, football, were I pray for the right result. It is too nerve wrecking so Íll beg you farwell and cook some food for Hannah instead.

Take care so long and hugs to you too !

Oct-04-19  virginmind: Hi <moronovich> and thank you for your kind thoughts. Indeed such memories may bring special feelings into our hearts.

Upon further consideration, I can only approve you: it must be an age thing, my tireness. Coming and going. But no vitamins or yoga for now. All's fine otherwise. By the way, did I tell you that for 6 years, in my thirties, I kept a relatively strict diet, meaning almost no meat at all (only fish and eggs)? It felt quite good and it indeed resolved at least one medical issue for me. But then I decided to return to being a carnivore, being told by qualified persons that I shouldn't push my luck.

In football we're going to play against Norway in a few days, hopefully it's gonna be a good match and, of course, the best will win (no draws allowed :).

Hugs to you and Hannah.

Oct-09-19  virginmind: Hi <Diademas>, what about the third part - Bergen and its surroundings - from the description of the places we plan to visit in June, that you so kindly provided? Or you prefer to move our discussion to your forum?
Oct-19-19  Count Wedgemore: Good morning, dear <moro>. Is this the book by Richard Bach that you recommended?

https://www.amazon.com/Illusions-Ad...

Oct-19-19  Count Wedgemore: Hi, <virginmind>. I remember your plan is to visit Western Norway, but if you also plan to spend at least some time in the Eastern region, like Oslo and its surroundings, I am of course more than happy to give you some pointers on what to see/visit. I quite understand that you prioritize the Western parts of our country, though. The nature is quite unique and breathtaking, we can't really compete with that here in the SouthEast :)
Oct-20-19  virginmind: Hi <Count Wedgemore>, of course it's great to have some tips from you regarding the Oslo region. We will stay there for 2 nights, so probably have only one full day to explore the city. Even if there may be places nearby worth seeing, I don't think we'll have the time (unless it's something gorgeous, or if it happens to be on our route outside Oslo). So we'll concentrate on the capital. I found on the net quite a few highlights to fill our day, and even more - but, with only 11 nights for the trip, I guess it's better to leave as many days as possible for the more scenic part of Norway.

Actually, being June, we briefly considered taking the plane all the way up to Tromso, for the midnight sun, but gave up on it, as too far/expensive. Maybe, just maybe, some other time we'll do it, hire the car from Tromso and drive to Nordkapp just for the sake of it. You know, adventure at the end of the world...:)

  moronovich: Hi <Count and virginmind> !

Talking about coincidenses,illusions and WW2 :

I have a chessfriend who was raised in the same house as Stauffenberg, the german officer who almost killed Hitler and a few years ago was portrayed in the movie "Valkyrie" played by Tom Cruise. My friend unfortunately lost his one hand in his early childhood, due to a kitchen accident in the beforementioned house. When I saw the movie the other day,I noticed that Stauffenberg was also missing a hand. The same one….

Oct-20-19  virginmind: Wow, that sure is some coincidence (albeit a chilly one)! I (think) I haven't seen the movie, but I did see the documentary on the subject, on National Geographic (or was it Viasat History?). But indeed such a rare thing to have a friend who lived on that house...
Oct-20-19  Count Wedgemore: Like <virginmind> said, a chilly coincidence :)

Have never got around to see the Tom Cruise movie either, but I once read a book about the 20 July plot, and what was clear to me was that it was much more than an isolated assassination attempt, but rather the planned beginning of a complete overthrow of the regime.

Well, the coup glamorously failed, as we all know.

Von Stauffenberg was a really fascinating character, I bet your friend had some stories to tell about him.

Oct-20-19  Count Wedgemore: Oh <moro>, I almost forgot: Gratulerer med Jonas Buhl Bjerre. Denmark's youngest ever Grandmaster. Only 15!
Oct-20-19

  moronovich: Thanks <Count>

Yes,he is a great talent, meassured by Danish standard. But if he can make it to say top 10-30 I´ll doubt so far.

A chilly coincidence it is :) And you are absolutely spot on about the planned beginning of a complete overthrow of the regime. Hitler just escaped by the narrowest of margins and who know how the world would have progressed if Staufenberg has succeeded !?!....Would you and I have been here today ? So far I haven´t heard my friend telling stories about him,but I can ask off course.

p.s.the movie is a good make,if you one day like to see it.

Fusilli: Dear <moronovich>, I was just taking a quick look at <jith1207>'s forum when I saw a post from you about your son. I had not idea about this (I am an inconsistent and spotty user of this website) and I just wanted to belatedly say that I am so sorry this has happened to him, and to you and all those who love him.

I know you had my step son in your mind when tragedy struck on my side, and please know that my heart goes out to your son, you and your loved ones.

  moronovich: Dear <Fusilli> !

Thanks a lot for your sincere words of compassion and comfort. They are deeply appreciated.

Well, there is always this empty chair, but it gives me a lot of comfort to go trough these 30 marvellous years we had together. Also chesswise we had many fine sharings and battles on the 64 squares.

And my thoughts also goes to you and the process you are going through with the hope that as much healing as possible will come to you.

Studies of humans show again and again that it is possible to live a good and prober life, despite those wounds that are sometimes inflicted upon us.That we are able to contain those wholes which are there.

With sincerity and the best of hopes

God kamp
