Behold the fiery disk of Ra!

Started with tournaments right after the first Fischer-Spassky set-to, but have long since given up active play in favour of poker.

In my chess playing days, one of the most memorable moments was playing fourth board on the team that won the National High School championship at Cleveland, 1977. Another which stands out was having the pleasure of playing a series of rapid games with Mikhail Tal on his first visit to the USA in 1988. Even after facing a number of titled players, including Teimour Radjabov when he first became a GM (he still gave me a beating), these are things which I'll not forget.

Fischer at his zenith was the greatest of all champions for me, but has never been one of my favourite players. In that number may be included Emanuel Lasker, Bronstein, Korchnoi, Larsen, Speelman, Romanishin, Nakamura and Carlsen, all of whom have displayed outstanding fighting qualities.

   Aug-05-25 Isaac Boleslavsky

perfidious: Boleslavsky was indeed named a grandmaster as one of the original recipients of the award, though it is unclear whether he received it for becoming a Candidate in 1950 or would have been named one in any case. See the link in the second post by <kingscrusher> above.

Aug-05-25 de Firmian vs G Garcia Gonzalez, 1988

perfidious: Garcia finishes matters with a clever shot after his opponent believes he has emerged from the complications with a whole skin: [DIAGRAM] 28....? This could easily be a Tuesday POTD.

   Aug-05-25 Adams vs J Rudd, 2025

perfidious: This game reminds one of Tal vs Fischer, 1959 in that Black successfully executed a strategically desirable exchange of dark-squared bishops, but that it proved untenable for tactical reasons while being punished in still more drastic fashion than in the above game.
