Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Sep-27-09  Jim Bartle: Sorry, Travis, I only saw it on a replay, only a couple of other plays from the game. It was called no fumble?

I still think in general terms it's a dumb idea, like trying to lateral the ball when you're about to be tackled. Might work, but too risky.

Sep-27-09  Jim Bartle: From Sports Illustrated, reporting on a game at Forbes Field in 1960:

"Dick Stuart hit a fly ball so far into left field that Orlando Cepeda ran into the scoreboard and knocked Washington clean out of the American League."

Sep-28-09  Travis Bickle: <Travis Bickle> Jim, Lovie Smith challenged the ruling and it was reversed. I agree it was a dumb thing to do but we see it time and time again. I think the adrenaline clouds the mind.
Sep-28-09  Jim Bartle: Travis, I saw that Jets QB Mark Sanchez did the same thing and the ball was knocked away. Fortunately for him, the ball had already crossed the goal line. Actually in his case it was more that he just carries the ball loosely; he'll have trouble in the future if he doesn't change that.

Speaking of "adrenaline clouds the mind," that probably also accounts for many of the silly interceptions Favre has thrown the past few years.

Sep-28-09  A.G. Argent: Yes Jim, Shaun Hill threw some very pretty passes with accuracy. 15 for 25; quite acceptable. I wasn't sure about his arm and with the running game a non-factor, he came through. They lost it on a fluke. Won't hang my head about that loss. Do wish they'd start going to Bruce a bit more often, though. Only two catches. Gotta use him! Anyway, bring on the Rams.
Sep-28-09  Jim Bartle: The running game took a huge hit when Gore was injured on his first carry. Of course the 49ers got a big break with the blocked FG for a TD to end the first half--a 10-point swing.

Is Isaac Bruce still a top receiver? He's been around approximately forever.

Phony Benoni: Thanks for the kind words about the Lions. Unfortunately, their next two games are at Chicago to face the Bickles, then home against Pittsburgh. I fear neither will be pretty.

Big series for the Tigers against the Twins, maybe starting tonight. We're getting a lot of rain around here right now. Good football weather.

Sep-28-09  Jim Bartle: Great to see a real showdown series during the regular season. Doesn't happen that often in the era of three divisions and the wild card.

Phony Benoni: Yeah, whatever happened to the old twilight doubleheader? Or even the regulation Sunday doubleheader with just a 15-20 minute break between games?

Oh, of course I know. Economics. The owners finally realized that, by spacing the games far enough apart, they could clear out the stadium and charge a whole new crowd full admission, instead of giving you two games for the price of one.

Well, perhaps it's all for the best. Otherwise, potential baseball superstars would have had to take up chess to make some real money.

WannaBe: Nay, they'd be Chess magazine editors, less thinking over the board, and all they have to do is critique the end result.

Kind like Ebert, sit around eat popcorn, milk duds, junior mints, diet coke, and watch a movie, then tell us how suck it was!! :-))))))

Sep-29-09  Jim Bartle: That's funny, I was just reading Ebert's book "I Really Hate, Hate, Hate This Movie." Hilarious reviews, some of which include movies I really liked. Overall, though, Ebert is one of the most positive of reviewers.

I for one don't think it's kosher to call it a doubleheader if you don't get to see two games with one admission.

Sep-29-09  A.G. Argent: Yep, best of luck today, Czar. Proverbial nail-biting time. Of course you'd prefer this situation didn't exist but it seems like the Twins do this every year, come on like a freight train in September, don't it. Just read about your door slammer, Fernando Rodney. Lidge and Ryan Franklin ain't the only closers having a really bad September. Rodney with a 10+ ERA this month. Perfectly horrible timing in becoming hittable with post-season looming. And it always seems to be psychological as opposed to mechanical with these guys. Fragile confidence, I guess. Unless your name is Rivera.
Sep-29-09  Jim Bartle: I think with Rivera a major part of his consistent success is that he isn't afraid to fail. He throws pitches that are tough but not impossible to hit. And when he loses, he takes it in stride.
Sep-29-09  A.G. Argent: Arrgh! Twins took the first one, 3-2 in 10.
Sep-29-09  hangingenprise: phony, you no longer have the worst team in football. that distiction belongs to the oakland fadeeeeeeeers.

Phony Benoni: <hangingenprise> Let's not forget the Rams, with 13 losses in a row. Or the Redskins, or Tampa Bay, or, of course, the Bears. There seem to be a lot of bad teams this year.

<A.G. Argen> Yeah, usual problem. Pitching keeps them in the game, but they can't get the big hit often enough.

It's hard to win a doubleheader, but I think the Tigers really needed both games today; they don't figure to do well the next two.

WannaBe: I don't quite count Chicago Bears as a 'bad' team yet... They seem to have some life left in them still!

The big surprise, for me, so far have been the Jets, and the offensive potency of New Orleans.
