Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Travis: Twins finish up at home against Kansas City; Tigers are home to the White Sox.
Sep-29-09  Travis Bickle: <WannaBe> Hey Rabbit man how can you be against The Bears? Bugs Bunny was the Bears quarterback from 1923-1929!

WannaBe: I'm not! Like I said, the Bears have signs of life, even after Urlacher went down. They best Pittsburgh, and have a good chance (in a relatively weak division) to get a play-off spot!

(I said weak, because GB aren't quite there yet, and Min. ViQueens will collapse later in the season after Favre dislocate his shoulder while shaving... Look at the Jets last year, they were great! Even talks of N.Y. Giants vs. N.Y. Jets in the Super Bowl. But nooooooo, Favre showed us his age by game 12 of the season!)

Phony Benoni: Normal Rodney save. Comes in with a two-run lead, gives up a run, puts the tying run in scoring position--then bears down and finishes the job.

His ERA isn't pretty, but he's still blown only one save. But I keep thinking of Mitch Williams and his implosion in the World Series.

So the Tigers keep their two game lead, and will be in good shape if they can split the next two games. But both pitching matchups are bad for them.

Phony Benoni: The good new is that the Tigers lead 7-2 going into the 9th. The bad news is that they've brought in Rodney. Most of the 10+ ERA mentioned earlier came in non-save situations.

Phony Benoni: False alarm. Rodney has a 1-2-3 ninth inning, and the magic number is two. They can clinch the division tomorrow.

Fans around here were quite worried about this game, since the Tigers started an untested rookie against a veteran who had dominated them all year. When the kid gave up two runs in the first, everyone was asking where they dug up this bum. Now he's a hero.

Sep-30-09  Jim Bartle: "The Kid" wasn't helped much by his centerfielder in the first inning, dropping a fly in deep center.

Phony Benoni: Granderson's been a bit shaky defensively of late. Hopefully it's just fatigue, and a couple of days off can help--if they can afford to give them to him.

keypusher: Congratulations again, Phony Benoni. Break up the Tigers and the Lions!
Oct-01-09  Jim Bartle: The Tigers need to wrap it up quickly, so they can save Verlander for the opener against the Yankees.

Phony Benoni: <JB> Exactly. He's due to pitch Sunday, and probably will if they haven't clinched. That means he wouldn't be available until game 3. Realistically, the only chance the Tigers have is starting pitching, and they need to have their best ready.

I peeked in at a message board for Yankees fans the other day, and there was a thread going on whether they'd rather face the Tigers or Twins. The verdict was unanimous for the Twins--simply because they didn't want to face Verlander twice in a short series.

Oct-01-09  Deus Ex Alekhina: Way too early for Tiger fans to be thinking about the Yankees! (Sorry) With the outfield looking as shaky as Bill Cosby's favorite desert, the Tigers haven't settled anything yet. Twinkies are fully capable of sweeping KC, & if Ozzie Guillen goes on another expletive-filled tirade against his Sox, uh oh, watch out pussycats. Maybe we're looking at a one game playoff (in Minnie) if the cats flounder.

Phony Benoni: Yes, we definitely got our hopes up too soon. Hold the champagne for now, and perhaps our current feelings will prove to be sham pain.
Oct-01-09  YouRang: Meanwhile, the Dodgers are making a thrilling bid to set a new skid record (most games with a magic number of 1 without winning the division).

Phony Benoni: Ye gods! It's four failures in a row for the Dodgers, and they close with three against Colorado! Are the Rockies going to pull off another miracle?
Oct-01-09  Jim Bartle: But the Dodgers are in the postseason, aren't they?
Oct-01-09
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: Yes, they've clinched at least a wild card. But it would still be remarkable if the Rockies coult catch them for the division title.
Oct-02-09  Deus Ex Alekhina: Correction: Bill Cosby's favorite desert might be the Sahara, but his favorite dessert is not as shaky as my spelling. What's the weather forecast for Detroit this weekend? Maybe a tripleheader on Sunday if wetness ensues - that won't help the Verlander rotation situation. Meanwhile (paging Foster Hewitt): It's Hockey Night In Sweden!! Break out the octopi.

Phony Benoni: Weather in Detroit is iffy all weekend. They should be able to get tonight's game in, but Saturday and Sunday look like a 30-50% chance of rain all day long. Monday looks OK if they need it, but hopefully the Twins will go belly up this weekned and we won't have to worry.

A playoff would be Tuesday at the MetroDoom. Normally it would be Monday, but the Favres are hosting Monday Night Football and that takes priority.

Any more doubleheaders and the Tigers may have to bring back Mickey Lolich.

Oct-02-09  Jim Bartle: Not the greatest gesture ever, but I liked the decision by the Tigers owner to keep the GM tower at the stadium, even though GM said they weren't going to pay for it any more, and add the names of Ford and Chrysler.

A tense situation. As my Bozo 0.5 computer confirms, Black can win here with 28...g4!, when his attack crashes through first. However, he made the mistake of losing a couple of tempi by winning a piece with check.

<28...f4 29.a6 fxe3+ 30.Ke1 g4>

Too late! The White king has been driven just far enough away that Black's attack can't reach him in time.

<31.axb7+ Kb8 32.Qa3>

Threatening a nice double queen sacrifce: 33.Qxa7+ Kxa7 34.b8Q+ Rxb8 35.Ra1#.

<32...Rxb7 33.Qa6 Ka8 34.Rxb7 gxf3 35.Qxa7#> 1-0

Perhaps games like this help me keep a philosophic calm during pennant races. And, by the way, it's 3-0 in the sixth now.

Oct-02-09  Jim Bartle: 8-0?

I do NOT want to see postseason games in the Metrodome!

Phony Benoni: And Minnesota's up 7-0 in the third. Yes, it looks like a good night to play chess. Maybe I'll hop over to FICS for a bit.
