| Oct-02-09 | | Jim Bartle: God, am I terrible at replaying games. I always make some mistake I don't realize for another ten moves, such as playing 0-0 instead of 0-0-0 for black here. Which I discovered when it was difficult to play 23...Rg8. My Mac Hiarcs gives 28...g4 a +2.02 after a minute or two. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Yes, that sounds about right. In such positions, the only piece worth winning is the king. |
| Oct-02-09 | | Jim Bartle: I assume if black had defended with ...b6 you would have taken with the rook. It's kind of fun to watch the evaluation as you play it through, and watch it jump to mate 7 after Qa3. |
| Oct-02-09 | | A.G. Argent: Czar, noooooooooooo!, I do NOT want the Tigers to fold and blow this. I just don't. |
Oct-02-09
 | | Phony Benoni: So far this year, they've been able to beat off challenge after challenge, even when it looked bleakest. Do they have one more in them? If it's any consolation, the Twins have to face Greinke tomorrow, whose chances for the Cy Young went up a bit tonight as Sabbathia got bombed. And the Tigers have Verlander available Sunday, if need be. |
| Oct-02-09 | | Jim Bartle: But the Tigers better wake up. 16-3 the last two games. |
| Oct-02-09 | | Jim Bartle: About the most exciting play for me is the play at the plate on an outfield throw. A great play tonight from Ethier to get a Rocky, just a perfect throw on the fly, and the catcher blocked the plate. It'll be on highlights. |
| Oct-03-09 | | Jim Bartle: Here's the play: http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?... |
Oct-03-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Nice play. Those runners always look safe to me, though, till they do the slo-mo. And I see that the Rockies stayed alive for the division title yet one more day. The Tigers seem to be like a racer who has sprinted to the front and is now trying desperately to stave off total collapse at the end. And, even if they do survive, I honestly can't see them beating the Yankees. |
| Oct-03-09 | | Jim Bartle: Yes, I always have the feeling runners are safe on steals of second, but they don't argue much when they are called out. |
| Oct-03-09 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> Very nice game, taking Bath to the cleaners. (I dunno, that pun has something missing...) Your observation is right on the money, too--Black wasted one move too many, and that was the margin of victory. Replaying the game as an uninvolved party, I found it odd that Black didn't take more vigorous countermeasures against your threat on the b-file. It's one of those threats that seem terribly obvious from a distance. Mr. Bath must have been lured into tunnel-vision by his own plan. I do hate playing against the French Defense. That's one of the reasons I play 1.b4. No French, no Sicilian... and if you lose, you can blame it on the rinky-dink opening. |
Oct-03-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> Thanks for your comments. I thought the countermeasures Bath took were pretty darn vigorous; he just made an error in judgment. I have never liked seeing the French either, but if I try it myself then White invariably plays the Tarrasch (3.Nd2) which I can't stand from either side. It's a hard life. |
| Oct-03-09 | | Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: ...I have never liked seeing the French either, but if I try it myself then White invariably plays the Tarrasch (3.Nd2) which I can't stand from either side. It's a hard life.> HAHAH!!! Phony you have a way with words!! |
| Oct-03-09 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: Is John Bath any relation to Jeremy Barth? Anyway, that game & diagrammed position remind me of a game I played in 1968 (and won ) against a 2 time US champion, Joe Edley. OK, he gave up chess shortly after that, and became a 2 time US Scrabble champion, but still, I'm counting it. The tabbies are playing later tonite & they should know the result in Minnie by the time they start & tomorrow's game may be meaningless, or, more likely, the tabbies may become meaningless if they can't figure out how to play the game. They don't even appear to have the strength to get on the plane for a one game playoff, if necessary. (Just to clarify: Edley became a 2 time US scrabble champion, not a 2 time US chess champion; he also was a commentator for ESPN's scrabble coverage & also wrote 2 scrabble books) |
| Oct-03-09 | | Jim Bartle: What does scrabble commentary sound like?
I've heard domino commentary on ESPN, and it sounds ridiculous. |
| Oct-03-09 | | Jim Bartle: Minnesota breaks scoreless tie in the 7th with 4 off Greinke, who was let down by his outfielder. Twins announcer: "And you can hear the groans in Michigan." Cruel. |
Oct-03-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <What does scrabble commentary sound like?> It's wordy. |
| Oct-03-09 | | Jim Bartle: Jazzy, xenophobic, quixotic? |
| Oct-03-09 | | technical draw: s-tile-ish? |
Oct-03-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Quizzical. |
| Oct-03-09 | | Jim Bartle: Nathan nails down the win for the Twins. You can thank the magnanimous Giants for sending him over a few years ago in exchange for (cough) AJ Pierczinski. Memories of Foster for Duffy and Cepeda for Sadecki. |
Oct-03-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Just looked that trade up. They also gave the Twins Francisco Liriano--then released Pierzynski and got nothing for him! AJ signed with the White Sox, and has been killing the Tigers ever sense. The Giants have a lot to answer for. But now, as you pointed out, it's time for the Tigers to deliver a few answers of their own. |
Oct-03-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Tigers down 2-0 in the second, and are already using their third pitcher of the night. This could get ugly. |
| Oct-03-09 | | Jim Bartle: Quentin is just floating on air, "zoning," thrilled that his alma mater, Stanford, defeated UCLA today and is 3-0 in the Pac-10. (!!) Not to jump the gun, but should this continue, Tigers would have good company in the 62 Dodgers in not scoring the last few games, and the Giants getting shut out the last two playoff games against St. Louis in 87, after leading 3-2. |
Oct-03-09
 | | Phony Benoni: 4-0 in the fifth, and they're on pitcher #4. And here I thought it was supposed to rain all weekend. Looking for consolation, I found that Retrosheet has box scores for the 1932 season up, which means this game is included. http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... Tony Lazzeri goes 5 for 6 with 6 RBI, hits for the cycle--and isn't even Player of the Game. And don't you just love it when a team scores 20 runs, and one of their pitchers gets a save? What I hadn't known was that coming into the game Gehrig had hit only 7 home runs in the first six weeks of the season. |
