| Oct-03-09 | | A.G. Argent: Does it seem like maybe Leyland is panicking a bit? Wouldn't blame him if he was, I suppose; very loud footsteps coming from the Twinks. And coming right down to the last day of the season. Amazing. |
|
Oct-03-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Frankly, I think this team is simply out of gas. They've been staggering the last couple of weeks, and nobody seems to have a spark of life left. It's not a matter of panic. Leyland simply doesn't have any working buttons to push. This city went into a state of apprehension when they couldn't clinch on Thursday, and now it's gloom. It's like the sports gods are saying, "Hey, we shot our wad on the Lions last week! Nothing left for the Tigers." |

 | | keypusher: <Phoni Benoni> I think that was also the day that John McGraw retired, so Gehrig was <a little> overshadowed on his greatest day. And that was the year the Yankees took the American League back from the A's too. |
|
| Oct-03-09 | | Jim Bartle: Manny drills a liner to right-center, the first time in ten at-bats (!), two walks and seven K's. Unfortunately Gonzalez made a diving catch. (Or did he?) |
|
Oct-03-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Of course he made the catch. Reality is what the umpire says it is. <Keypusher> It was Gehrig's fortune to be constantly overshadowed. And Lazzeri would eventually get his day in the sun; I'm still waiting for the game where he drove in 11 runs. |
|
| Oct-03-09 | | Jim Bartle: In the fourth in LA, no baserunners yet, either team. (Kershaw has 9 K's) PB, AG, know the record for longest time of perfect pitching? Best I know is Dodgers-Cubs 1965 (Koufax's perfect game), nobody on base until Dodgers got a leadoff walk in the fifth. |
|
| Oct-04-09 | | Jim Bartle: I really butchered that post about Ramirez. I meant his liner was the first time he'd put the ball in play in ten at-bats. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Thank you for the research! Those were truly amazing finds! |

Oct-04-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> Here's what I was able to find: 30 outs, Dennis Martinez, MON vs. Mike Morgan, LAD, July 28, 1991 (Martinez pitched a perfect game): http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... 29 outs, Dean Chance, LAA, vs. Whitey Ford, NYY, Aug. 10, 1963: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... 29 outs, Greg Hibbard, CHW, vs. Andy Hawkins, NYY, July 1, 1990 (the infamous 4-0 no-hit loss for Hawkins): http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... 27 outs, Sandy Koufax, LAD, vs. Bob Hendley, CHC, Sept. 9, 1965 (Koufax pitched a perfect game): http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... 27 outs, Kevin Appier, KC, vs. Jim Converse, SEA, May 22, 1993: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... 27 outs, Tim Hudson, ATL, vs. Derek Lowe, LAD, July 9, 2008: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... This is not from an official source, so there may be others. However, it does seem more difficult for both pitchers to record 27 perfect outs than for one. |
|
| Oct-04-09 | | Jim Bartle: Great stuff. Chance vs. Ford!
A different level, of course, but I wonder about the NCAA Regional game between Yale and St. John's, Darling vs. Viola, where Darling was perfect for eleven innings, then lost on a run without a hit. I don't know how far Viola had a perfecto or a no-hitter. |
|
| Oct-04-09 | | A.G. Argent: David Zechiel, if you happen to be checking in, congrats to your Dodgers. Looks like it's them v. the Birdos. Or should I say the Foldos. Stinking the joint up, they are. But both of them are, actually, as well as the Phils, for that matter. Rockies are the only squad of the NL bunch with anything resembling momentum. Guess they're all hoping to just pull the proverbial switch and voila, become world-beaters in post-season. I know, it happens. Most recent example I can think of, Cards in '06, terrible in September but righted the ship in October (sorry, Czar). (And Dave Z). But it's folly to count on that. One thing's for certain though, this is one of my least favorite days of the calendar year; last day of baseball season. Seems like it all started just a couple of weeks ago. Anyway, best of luck to all concerned, especially today for the Tigers. |

Oct-04-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> All the sources I've found say it was a 11-inning no-hitter, not a perfect game. For example: http://brothersjuddblog.com/archive... If St. John's leadoff hitter batted in the 12th inning, there must have been at least three baserunners earlier. At any rate, Viola was far from perfect; Yale stranded 13 base runners. |

| Oct-04-09 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni>, <Open Defense> Anybody got a collection of Smith-Morra games? I'd like to get to know that gambit better. Always looking for new ways to discomfit the Sicilian! (Without discomfiting myself, of course...) |

| Oct-04-09 | | Jim Bartle: Thanks for the notes on the Darling-Viola game, PB. You've read the Roger Angell story on the game, where he watched it with ex-Yale coach Smokey Joe Wood? I've noticed the Rockies are almost entirely a homegrown team. Pretty rare these days. |
