Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: Detroit guaranteed themselves at least one more game...

Will it be Monday vs. Twins, or later in the week vs. Yankees??

Oct-04-09  Red October: any Nascar fans ? I'm watching it after a long time on TV

WannaBe: Nevermind, the game has been moved to Tuesday, if there is one... Twins ahead of Kansas City. 8-4 top 6th...
Oct-04-09  Deus Ex Alekhina: The NASCAR fans have been run over(altho I like that burger commercial with that driver whatever-his-name). The puddy tats have guaranteed themselves one more day of misery, in Minnesota, where the Twinkies are too tough.
Oct-04-09  technical draw: <Phony Benoni: Oh, what the heck; I signed up. Maybe I'll get another chance to thrash <technical draw>'s premature 4.Bxc6 line.>

<Phony> Did we ever get to play this game? I can't find it in the QA archives.

Oct-04-09  Red October: Earnhardt and Andretti are sill racing!!
Oct-04-09  Jim Bartle: Looks like the Bickles handled the Phonies easily today.

Phony Benoni: <technical draw> Nope. One of us is very lucky.

<WannaBe> If the Twins win their game today, there will be a one game playoff Tuesday night at the MetroDoom. Normally it would have been Monday, but those darn Favres won't reschedule their Monday Night Football game.

Phony Benoni: <JB> It was tied at halftime, but the Lions faded. And having the Bears run back the 2nd half kickoff 102 yards didn't help. Stafford twisted a knee, but it may not be serious.

<Red October: Earnhardt and Andretti are sill racing!!>

It's good to see that the grandkids are carrying on the family tradition.

Oct-04-09  Red October: for a minute I had visions of them being escorted to their cars in wheel chairs lol
Oct-04-09  Travis Bickle: Mr Benoni and all you sports fans baseball is great and I like a little tennis but I think we need to diversify are sporting interests around here. So I will make the 1st gesture with a musical statement that I'm sure you all will enjoy!

P.S. and yes the baseball season is too long!

Phony Benoni: Whaddya mean, Mr. Bickle? The baseball season is only twelve months long! It can't possibly be shortened any further!

Now football .. that's a sport whose season is too long. Nobody should be allowed to play football unless there is snow on the ground. In Miami.

Oct-04-09  Jim Bartle: Reagan called Walter Payton in the locker room after he (Payton, that is) broke the rushing record. Payton picked up the phone and said, "The check is in the mail."
Oct-04-09  dakgootje: <any Nascar fans ? I'm watching it after a long time on TV>

In general I like most sports to watch (okay, except curling and the pathetic looking racewalking), but I have never understood the lure to things like nascar or any motor racing sport-things... I mean, they are just going round and round a couple of hundred times... great to do, but terrible to watch :S

Oct-04-09  Jim Bartle: There are always crashes to break up the boredom...

No, NASCAR is a whole culture. As I understand it, there's a lot of access to the drivers for fans, more than in other sports. On the negative side, they don't allow foreign cars, so that limits the competition for no reason.

Phony Benoni: Minnesota 13, Kansas City 4. Tuesday Night Baseball!

My favorite sports to watch are those like baseball and U.S. football where the action comes in discrete chunks. I have just enough ADD that I want to be able to do something productive while the game is on, or even hang around here. I dislike sports where the action is continuous (basketball, hockey, non-U.S. football, motor racing) and I actually have to pay attention.

WannaBe: Interesting info, in an one-game playoff (Twins-Tigers), all the stats from the game will count towards <REGULAR> season. Not sure how many people knew that.

Any idea who will be the starting pitchers yet? Not getting any info from ESPN...

WannaBe: It will be Baker (Twins) and Porcello (Tigers) 4 PM, Central Time.

Why 4?? Don't they realize people don't sneak out of the office until 4:30??

Oct-04-09  technical draw: <And the pathetic looking racewalking...>

You're right! haha! What a weird "sport"! They look like they have to go to the bathroom!

Phony Benoni: I think the 4 PM starting time is due to several factors.

1) The winner has to play in New York the next day. Usually, when a team has to travel without an off day, they try and schedule a day game.

2) But if they play it at 1:00 PM like normal, nobody will watch it. Oh, I'm sorry, people will be deprived of the opportunity to watch. (Gotta remember the company line.) So there is a compromise. 4:00 in Minnesota is 5:00 in the all-important Eastern Time Zone, which will improve ratings ... er, give more people the chance to watch.

Oct-05-09  playground player: <Phony Benoni> I can't wait to replay these games, but I have to wait: the %$#@$#& oven conked out and nobody seems to be able to fix it! The perpetual joys of apartment life...
Oct-05-09  Travis Bickle: <Red October: for a minute I had visions of them being escorted to their cars in wheel chairs lol> I had visions of them maybe having to dig 1 of them up! LOL
Oct-05-09  Deus Ex Alekhina: Splendid Splinter - meet Charlie Tuna!
Oct-05-09  Jim Bartle: What's this about Miguel Cabrera pulling a John Mayberry?
Oct-05-09

Phony Benoni: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp... seems a good report.

It was certainly stupid of Cabrera to get drunk and stay out most of the night during a crucial series. He's a great palyer and a hard worker, but obviously still has some growing up to do.
