Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Oct-05-09  Jim Bartle: A game for those of us watching Vikings-Packers: longest time the announcers don't mention Favre going against his old team. So far, stands at about 45 seconds.

Phony Benoni: Oh. I didn't know the Vikings were playing the Jets tonight.
Oct-05-09  Travis Bickle: I was in a dilemma tonight. Because I hate both the packers and the vikings equally. I was hoping they would beat each other up and carry off many from both teams on stretchers and hope for a tie. ; P

BTW, I notice that the tiebreaker games starts at 5:07 PM ET.

That's an odd-looking start time. I can only guess that the Tigers wanted 5:00 and the Twins wanted 5:15, so they compromised. ;-)

keypusher: <On Saturday, the day of the incident, Cabrera went 0-for-4 and didn't hit the ball out of the infield, including two strikeouts and a ground-ball double play to end a scoring threat. The injuries to the left side of his face were visible to television cameras. >

Yeesh, a Mayberry indeed.

Oct-06-09  Jim Bartle: I like a lot of the newer baseball statistics, but this from an cnnsi.com colum is too much even for me:

"Traditionally, the Triple Crown includes batting average, home runs, and runs batted in, but most serious fans these days understand that on-base percentage and slugging percentage are more telling indicators of a player's value than homers or RBIs. Joe Mauer is about to win the Enlightened Triple Crown."

The Enlightened Triple Crown...

Phony Benoni: <YouRang> I've noticed that staggering of starting times recently. Games will start at 7:05 or 7:07 or 7:08 or 7:10. Maybe it's some sort of communications rule. Maybe they're just trying to squeeze in an extra commercial after the pregame show. Or maybe George and Fred screwed up again.

Ever notice how, when you're in a building with several clocks in view, no two ever show the same time? This is due to George and Fred.

On the day the building opens, they are assigned to set all the clocks.

George walks up to the first one and says, "What time is it, Fred?"

Fred looks at his watch and says, "It's 9:30, George."

So they spend the next half-hour setting all the clocks to 9:30.

Oct-06-09  YouRang: The mention of John Mayberry above reminds me of "Spec" Richardson, who served with the Houston Astros as one of the worst baseball General Manager's ever. Wikipedia has this comment:

<Richardson spent most of his tenure trading away that talent for aging players, ensuring that the Astros would continue to dwell in the National League's cellar...>

He traded Mayberry to Kansas City for a couple pitchers who had brief and forgettable careers. Mayberry played 6 years with KC, averaging about 24 homers a year and knocking in 100+ runs three times.

He also is credited with trading Mike Cuellar to the Orioles for Curt Blefary, a career .237 hitter. Cuellar went on to win the Cy Young award for the Orioles and have four 20-win seasons.

Most famously, he traded future Hall-of-famer Joe Morgan, Cesar Geronimo, and Jack Billingham to the Cincinnati Reds for Lee May. Now, Lee May was a pretty good hitter for the Astros (for 3 years). But this trade helped the Reds become the famed "Big Red Machine".

Amazingly, Richardson later got a job as the General Manager of the San Francisco Giants.

Phony Benoni: Tigers up 3-0 in the third thanks to a home run by ... guess. Yup. Looks like somebody got to bed early night.

Not gloating yet, though!

Oct-06-09  Jim Bartle: Cabrera hit a double against the wall his first time up as well.

Yes, Richardson was famous for his terrible trades, though I think there were a couple other players in that Morgan trade which made it not so disastrous.

I'll bet a lot of the problem was that he didn't take into account how terrible the Astrodome was for hitting, so he overrated his pitchers and underrated the hitters.

Oct-06-09  Deus Ex Alekhina: As for clocks - many years ago when I was going to Wayne State U, I left the campus shortly after 6 to catch the Woodward bus to get to Fort & Woodward for a transfer. I looked up at the clock on the teacher's building (I think it was called the Penobscot) & it was 6:15, 2 miles to go & my connection would leave at 6:25. this is going to be close - but the next clock that I passed (somewhere between the VNA & the Vernors - or was the Faygo plant) showed 6:10(!) Continuing on , the next clock (Hudson's) showed 6:05(!) It was clear that I would make my connection, but the weird thing was - apparently I was traveling backwards in time!

Phony Benoni: 4-3 Twins in the 7th. Think I'll save my copy of <The Sorrows of Young Werther> for another night.
Oct-06-09  technical draw: Tied. But home team advantage should decide. Minnesota should win.

My goodness, I'm actually caring about this game. Almost as bad as the ulcer I nearly got back in 1967.

Oct-06-09  technical draw: Incredible 4 runs and 8 hits each. Talk about even steven teams.

keypusher: I am happy for Cabrera, at least. 162 games and 8 innings in the books, still everything to play for!
Oct-06-09  Jim Bartle: I have never seen an effective slide into first like that. Fantastic.
Oct-06-09  technical draw: A bottom of the ninth win would be great to see, uh but not for tiger fans.
Oct-06-09  YouRang: Twins in some trouble! Runners on the corners, nobody out, and #2, 3 and 4 hitters coming up!
Oct-06-09  technical draw: Double play!!
Oct-06-09  YouRang: I just heard a groaning noise coming from the direction of Michigan...
Oct-06-09  technical draw: This is it folks, bottom of the 9th. One swing and Detroits season is over.
