| Sep-26-09 | | Jim Bartle: That was clearly a case of drafting for "need" rather than taking the best player. The Blazers figured they had Clyde Drexler at shooting guard, so didn't need Jordan. They easily could have played Jordan at forward, or as distasteful as it sounds, traded Drexler for a big man. There are many cases, of course (LaRue Martin, anyone?), but about the worst high draft choice ever has got to be Ryan Leaf at San Diego. Of course the 49ers now have #1 pick Alex Smith sitting on the bench, so I shouldn't talk. |

 | | TheAlchemist: It's not that Bowie was such a bad player, but I think he had injury problems even in college and later his career was severely hampered by further injuries. If it wasn't for Jordan at 3, he wouldn't be considered as probably the worst draft pick ever. Although the 1984 generation is one of the best ever, there were some big misses that year in the top 10, like Mel Turpin at 6 (Mavs), Lancaster Gordon at 8 (Clippers), Leon Wood at 10 (76ers), when later at 16 the Jazz drafted Stockton, or Kevin Willis was no.11 (Hawks). Curiously, the Blazers drafted Jerome Kersey, who turned out as the best player from the 2nd round, at 46. I think LaRue Martin (Blazers again!) is right up there, though the '72 generation must be one of the worst ever, no one really good apart from McAdoo (no.2, how did they miss him?) and Westphal (10), maybe also Buse (34). Curiously, Dr.J was drafted that year by Milwaukee at 12 (!), but never played for them and remained in the ABA. The Blazers were again on fire in 1978, where they, along with the Kings, Pacers, Knicks and Warriors passed on Bird (one of the great moves by Auerbach). A recent huge blunder was the Pistons drafting Milicic at 2 in 2003, but that season they went on to win the championship, so it wasn't so important in that aspect. However, right behind him were Anthony, Bosh and Wade. One of the funniest things has to be the Bulls-Sonics "duel" in 1987, the Sonics agreed to draft Pippen at 5 and traded him for Polynice, whom the Bulls picked at 8. At 9 the Sonics drafted Derrick McKey (a decent player, but nothing special), while the Bulls chose Grant at 10. |
| Sep-26-09 | | Jim Bartle: You have to excuse the teams which passed on Bird. He was still going to play another year of college, and was under no obligation to sign with the team that chose him. He could have re-entered the draft. That 2003 draft has to be one of the best eer.
I don't quite understand the draft trade involving Pippen. But he was from a tiny university in Arkansas, with no experience against top competition, so it was a gamble to take him. In fact I don't think he was particularly good his first couple of years. Among the really bad #1 picks you have to include Joe Barry Carroll to the Warriors in 1980. He really earned his nickname Joe Barely Cares. And to rub a little salt in the wound, the W's traded Robert Parish AND the pick that became Kevin McHale to get him. (The W's also took Chris Washburn #2 in 1986. A complete and absolute bust.) |

| Sep-26-09 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> Jim on worst picks of all time dont forget greenbays number 1 Tony Mandarich. |
| Sep-26-09 | | Travis Bickle: Phony you showed a great back when you linked Barry Sanders. So I in turn will show a great back. He wasnt the fastest but he was some kind of quick! He had the greatest balance and strength for a running back I think I ever seen. He could pass the ball like a QB and did for touchdowns, was also an excellent reciever. He could get the tough yards, and man he could hit the hole with a burst! On blocking once I seen him take on a blitzing linebacker and blocked him so powerfully he raised him off the ground LOL. When he rushed he knocked down the tacklers with a straight arm. You know by now he was Sweetness Walter Payton. I couldnt find a highlight reel to do him justice so I'll have to settle for this 1. ; ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkQJ... |
| Sep-26-09 | | Jim Bartle: Payton was amazingly strong, and always in great shape. Known to be a very clean player, as was Singletary. First five in 1989 draft: Aikman, Mandarich, Sanders, Derrick Thomas, Derrick Thomas. Which name doesn't fit? A few years ago the Raiders took another "can't miss" tackle, Robert Gallery, who hasn't been all that good, taking him ahead Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger and Larry Fitzgerald. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> The second Derrick Thomas? <Travis> For a minute there, I thought we were going to see a video of your high school playing days. |
| Sep-26-09 | | Jim Bartle: Oops! Last name there should be Deion Sanders. |
| Sep-26-09 | | Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: <<Travis>> For a minute there, I thought we were going to see a video of your high school playing days.> I was dammit but I couldnt find The Argo Argonauts films on me. LOL |
| Sep-26-09 | | Jim Bartle: I'll bet Travis practiced his trash talking in front of the mirror. Tigers down 5-0 to White Sox, have come back to tie. |
Sep-26-09
 | | Phony Benoni: And to win 12-5. Every time it looks like they are about to collapse, they reach down and find something that keeps them afloat. Big four game series next week, at Detroit, against the red hot Twins. They'll have some sort of a lead coming in, and just need to hold serve. Though it's probably not going to help much. I just can't see them beating the Yankees. |
| Sep-26-09 | | Jim Bartle: Appearances can be deceiving, but the Tigers looked like a team determined not to lose. |
| Sep-26-09 | | A.G. Argent: Gentlemen, please allow me a bit of celebration. St Louis Cardinals - 2009 NL Central Champs. I happened to be sitting in a bar watching it as I can't afford cable and I gotta admit, the emotion in LaRussa's eyes as he hugged every single guy with the utmost sincerity that single-filed past him into the dugout was a side of him I ain't sure I ever seen before. Even when they won the Series in '06. A rare vulnerability. Task master unmasked. Quite interesting. |
| Sep-27-09 | | A.G. Argent: And Travis, all due respect. |
| Sep-27-09 | | Travis Bickle: <A.G. Argent> Congratulations A.G. on The Cardinals Division Championship! |
| Sep-27-09 | | Travis Bickle: This is what is killing professional sports especially football where they play only 16 regular season games and have to show a hundred and forty seven commercials an hour to pay these punk moron athletes and their slick (agents) lawyers! The obnoxiously arrogant agent in this video says ask the owners if the draft picks are worth that ridiculous amount of money. But the truth is if the owners held together to hold number 1 draft choices salaries down the Players Union would sue for collusion! |
| Sep-27-09 | | Travis Bickle: Sorry guys forgot the video! ; P Here it is.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haYi... |
| Sep-27-09 | | Jim Bartle: Not permitted to watch that video outside the US apparently. I don't agree with this huge bonus thing to high draft picks. And that can be from the player's point of view as well. I'd think a guy with confidence in his ability would sign a one- or two-year contract for a modest amount of money, then show everybody he can play. And then he can go for the big contract.
Now these guys sign for five or six years, and if they turn out to be great, they're stuck. |

Sep-27-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Lions score to go up 20-7 with 6 minutes left. They're going to have to pull off a miracle to lose this one. |
Sep-27-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Knew I shouldn't lose faith in the Lions. 19-14 with 2:36 left (they went for two before, and missed). Washington has all three timeouts, so there's plenty of time for the Lions to blow it. |
Sep-27-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Lions hang on for the win.
And, no matter what you think about Brett Favre personally, the guy can still play football. |
Sep-27-09
 | | keypusher: Congratulations, <Phony Benoni>! |
| Sep-27-09 | | Jim Bartle: Good for the Lions! |
| Sep-27-09 | | Jim Bartle: Even though they won, I see one of the Bears got caught trying a stunt that I'd think would backfire more often. The runner was stopped at the one and tried to stretch out the ball across the goal line. This always seems like a foolish move to me, unless it's fourth down, and this time he fumbled it and the Seahawks recovered. Just read how the Niners lost. Unbelievable, Favre does it again. Still, Niners are looking better and better. |
| Sep-27-09 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> Sounds like sour grapes to me. Its dumb to stretch the ball but when your in the heat of the moment a player will stretch for more yards and no he didnt fumble, that's why the officials have replay from multiple angled camera's. P.S. They didn't call the Seahawks defensive players body slam on Jay Cutler when the ball was way gone. |
