Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

tpstar: <Phony Benoni> I'm glad your Lions are doing well. =)

One thing I'm not hearing yet about the Lions bandwagon is the improved offensive line. Calvin Johnson wouldn't be making such spectacular catches if the QB didn't have time to make the throws. Pass protection has been a chronic complaint from Detroit QBs, particularly Rodney Peete and Scott Mitchell.

I have the strange sense the lockout helped the Lions more than other teams, partly because they were on a roll at the end of last season. I also suspected the main problem all along was personnel and not coaching.

WannaBe: Isn't megatron one of them Transformer car? Wasn't it a Ford Pinto that can change into a 300 lb linebacker?
Oct-02-11  hangingenprise: baloney: didn't the lions have a running back gaining yards. the o line had to be doing something. most super bowl teams have had a "megatron"' 49'ers, steelers, warner, brady, ect. as far as personnel yep when you have millens you don't have personnel!!!
Oct-02-11  hangingenprise: <wannabe> barring injures this lion team has some hall of famers. defensive tackles, 1 megatron, i won't be a wannabe and jinx some others.

Oct-03-11  Deus Ex Alekhina: Tigers almost let the Sunday game "slip away" (why do those luckydamnyankees always get some weird play in their favor). Apparently, Jessica Simpson snuck into the football stadium during the 3rd quarter of the Lions-Cowboys game.

From the horse's own autobiography:

Here is the score from <Nezhmetdinov's> autobiography- identical to that given in Pishkin, posted by <Kamalakanta>:

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 d6 3.Nc3 e5 4.Nf3 Nbd7 5.g3 exd4 6.Nxd4 g6 7.Bg2 Bg7 8.0-0 0-0 9.b3 Nc5 10. b4 Ne6 11.Nb3 Nd7 12. Bb2 Ne5 13.Na5 Nd4 14. Na4 c5 15.a3 Bg4 16.Bxd4 cxd4 17.h3 Be6 18.c5 b5 19.cxb6 axb6 20.Bxa8 Qxa8 21.Nxb6 Qa6 22.Na4 Bxh3 23.Rc1 d3 24.exd3 Qa8 25.f3 Ng4 26.Nc4 Bd4+ 27.Kh1 Qd5 28.Rc2 Bxf1 White Resigns. 0-1

I think that <Rashid Nehzmetdinov> should be credited with being most likely to have the correct score for this game- since he freaking played it, and annotated it himself in his own autobiography.

jessicafischerqueen: <PB> would you consider submitting a correction slip?

I just posted the case on the Librarian Forum, since it might be tricky to just rely on a correction slip given that multiple bogus scores are involved?

I strongly advise we go with the guy who actually played the game here.

Anyways your corrections carry a lot more weight with the administrators than do mine, for obvious reasons.

You're not a crank, for one.

I've thought for a while that Roddick should do acting. He's in total control of his face. For instance, it's impossible to say when you watch the clip exactly when his response occurs to him, but he does allow you to see, barely, that he savors it. Good sense of timing, too. One for the testy athlete presser hall of fame.

Phony Benoni: <td> You are entirely correct that the Yankees would slaughter either Texas or Tampa Bay in the ALCS. They must be a truly great team to put up this gallant fight against the Tigers.

WannaBe: And then, we have the first elimination, TB's magical season comes to an end, to the same team as last year.

NY and Arz both face elimination tonight. (As if y'all don't already know that.)

Oct-04-11  Deus Ex Alekhina: The Cats need to take down thedamnyankees tonite, because thosehatedyankees always get the calls, the bounces, and the benefit of fan interference, in NY. I can't ever remember the time that a controversial call went against therottenyankees, on their home field.

WannaBe: Porcello (Is that like, kinda of musical instrument? Between a regular cello and a bass?) 4.75 ERA got through top of the first. Now the Tigers need to jump all over AJ.

Jump on him like a trampaline, jump up and down like doing double-dutch skip-rope, jump on his like a 250lb. pro wrestler jumping off the ropes, jump on him like... Oh, you get my message.
