Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

   Jun-10-22 L T Magee vs E L Holland, 1948 (replies)

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Hey, Travis, everyone in Detroit is going crazy about this one. The team actually plans to show up for the first half, so look out!

Phony Benoni: Doesn't look like the Tigers' night. Down 4-1 going into the 7th and the teeth of the Yankee bullpen. Ol' C.Y. Burnett did the job tonight.

And as the end of the regular season showed, if you're losing after seven, you might as well not bother with the remainder of the game.

keypusher: I love the ESPN blurb: < A.J. Burnett allowed one run. It's now up to New York's bullpen to close out a "must-win" Game 4.> I think you can safely drop the quotation marks, guys.

WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> As you know, us Dodgers can never-ever-ever root for a) NY/SF Giants, and b) Yankees.

<Travis Bickle> I hear, that the Lions are a second half team. You may want to pass that on to the Bears front office and coaching staff, just in case.

Oct-04-11  technical draw: Well it 10-1 Yankees at top of the 8th. So I'm going to hit the sack expecting no new surprises in the morning. I don't think they need to use Mariano tonight. That sends the last game of the series to Yankee Stadium, should be a thriller. Go Yankees!

Phony Benoni: It doesn't matter how bad the score is; it only counts as one loss.

Rinse and repeat.

WannaBe: Pirates-Yankees, 1975 (?) Didn't the Yankees outscore them by 20,000 runs but still lost in 7 games?
Oct-05-11
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: You're thinking 1960. The Yankee wins in that series were by scores of 10-0, 12-0, and 16-3. The Pirates' four wins were by a total of 7 runs.

Game 7 of that series may have been the most exciting game ever played.

WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> In your '43 US Open collection page Game Collection: US Open 1943, Syracuse, there is an Edna Horowitz, is she related to Isreal in any way?

Can you find out, if you don't know the answer?

jessicafischerqueen: Wonderful! Thanks for all of that hard work you did on the game page as well-- fascinating, I'd seen you and <crawfb5> do that before, reconstructing the scores like forensic scientists.

I hope your correction slip will bear fruit.

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> I think that Horowitz was probably tied to New York by his work on <Chess Review>, nor was he as young as he used to be. The US Championship was always held in New York, while the US Open traveled the country.

WannaBe: You don't want to sit out here, 52 degrees, cold as heck, paying $12.75 for a 16 oz draft beer, then $7.75 for some pig-parts stuffed into a tube, then worried about getting mugged on the subway home...

Much better staying warm, read the 'insightful' comments on this page, and enjoy the 'virtual company'! =)

I was with you until I got to the mugging. It's astounding, really, how safe New York City is nowadays.

Detroit Lions' odd to win the Super Bowl was 60-1, now it's 12-1.

Detroit is also a 6 point favorite in MNF matchup with Da Bears. (Without H.W. Jr. singing intro.)

Oct-06-11  technical draw: Ok I'm calling it early for the Tigers. It's 2-0 in the top of the second and the Yanks already look listless, dem bums. TD's final prediction Tigers 8 Yanks 3. See you next year.....
