 | | Phony Benoni: And don't forget Freese dropping an easy pop fly.
The statheads over at BaseballReference.com have proclaimed Freese's offensive performance last night the greatest in Series history, using a metric called "Win Probabity Added". It far outdistanced Pujols' three homer game in a blowout which the Cards would have won easily without Pujols. I don't know about this stat. Freese broke the record held by Kirk Gibson for the home run off Eckersley. I suppose it's supposed to measure quality rathan quantity. The best ever? Art Shamsky's performance in this game: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... Not bad for a guy who didn't enter the game until the eighth inning, and whose team wound up losing. |
| Oct-28-11 | | Jim Bartle: The greatest offensive performance ever was by Art Shamsky? I had never heard of this game. He comes in to play left field in the eighth, and hits homers in the eighth, tenth and eleventh innings. Then didn't get to bat in either the twelfth or thirteenth. Just as strange, the Pirates batted Jose Pagan fifth in the order, after Clemente and Stargell and before Clendennon and Mazeroski. I mean, Jose Pagan? And he went 0 for 7. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Well, again they were looking at the quality and "clutchness" of the hits. The homer in the eighth gave Cincy a temporary lead; the other two tied the game in extra innings. I think by this measure a walk-off single is worth more than a first inning grand slam. It seems kind of funny to me too. |
| Oct-28-11 | | Jim Bartle: And what if a pitcher throws a perfect game but his team scores 10 runs? The perfect game wouldn't have so much "value." In pitching performance then, a certain one in Los Angeles in 1965 "which shall not be named" would likely be the most valuable in history. |

 | | WannaBe: What if the 'walk-off single' occurs in the first inning? =) Who are we rooting for tonight? |
Oct-28-11
 | | OhioChessFan: Anyone but St. Louis. |
| Oct-28-11 | | Jim Bartle: Well, St. Louis has got its #1 pitcher going, while Texas is going with sort of any old guy. Holland shut them out in game 4, but he pitched last night and can't start. So Texas looks like a sure winner. |
Oct-28-11
 | | Phony Benoni: I am in my usual indecisive mode. Every time they show a picture of Nolan Ryan, I root for the Rangers. Most of the rest of the time, I root for St. Louis (do you realize they overcame five different leads last night?). So I'm probably rooting for the teams to use all 50 players; they only used 42 last night. Love National League baseball. |
Oct-28-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Oh, Matt Holladay is out for St. Louis. He suffered a severe bruise of his right pinky finger diving back into third base when he was picked off. Apparently it wasn't fractured as originally thought, but if it's keeping him out of Game 7 he must not be able to swing or throw at all. Yes, I know he sounds like a sissy, when guys like Pete Reiser pinch-hit with a broken leg. But St. Louis has activated some random outfielder anyway, who will probably turn out to be The Hero. |
| Oct-28-11 | | Travis Bickle: So Phony should I put a $100 down on St Louis? ; P |
Oct-28-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis> Please don't ask me. I gave up betting on games when I had the Chargers in this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUuO... |
| Oct-28-11 | | Jim Bartle: What's the name of the outfielder activated by the Cards? Roy Hobbs? |
Oct-28-11
 | | WannaBe: St.L activated Bob Gibson?! |
Oct-28-11
 | | WannaBe: 2-2 bottom o' foist. |
Oct-28-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Hoo, boy. Here we go again. And who needs Roy Hobbs when you have David Freese? It's Adron Chambers, by the way. The story goes that he was eating at T.G. Friday's with his girlfriend when the news of his activation flashed over a TV screen. He asked her to excuse him, found a phone booth, and the rest is history. He seems to be a speedster and defensive player, not a slugger. |
Oct-28-11
 | | OhioChessFan: I'd strangle a pitcher who walked two batters in a row with a 2-0 lead. |
| Oct-28-11 | | Jim Bartle: What an incredible story about Chambers! Unbelievable! I mean, he actually found a phone booth? |
Oct-28-11
 | | WannaBe: <JB> Bwahahahahahah! |
| Oct-28-11 | | Jim Bartle: If Freese hits a single next time up, does he get credit for a 4-at-bat cycle? Over two games, that would be. When he hits the ball hard on a line, do they call it a Frozen rope? |
| Oct-28-11 | | Travis Bickle: A Dinger!! |
Oct-28-11
 | | OhioChessFan: <JB: What an incredible story about Chambers! Unbelievable! I mean, he actually found a phone booth?> A couple weeks ago I was using a phone booth right by the street. It was close to a traffic light and I heard a person commenting to me how odd they thought it was that someone would use one. |
Oct-28-11
 | | WannaBe: Orel and Bobby V. are commenting about giving away a 'play'. Where the batter (on that bunt play) did not even look at third-base coach. The batter already know his job (bunt) and by not looking or even pretend to, gave away the fact, that he is going to bunt... Sure enough, he bunted. |
| Oct-28-11 | | Jim Bartle: Cards have scored two without a hit, still have bases loaded. |
Oct-28-11
 | | WannaBe: Just before the HBP, Bobby V. said: "He just balked bigger than heck." Gotta love it. :-)) |
| Oct-28-11 | | Jim Bartle: Where are Valentine and Hershiser doing commentary? I only get Gary Thorne and Rick Sutcliffe on ESPN International, and they're pretty bad together, exaggerate every tiny thing. |
