Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Couldn't help it. Once you get to my advanced age, you lose all sense of moral responsibility.

Not that I take Facebook all that seriously. I don't use any of the apps or play any of the games, but I have reconnected with a few old chess friends such as <Resignation Trap>. Just wish he would stop posting those blizzard pictures from Wyoming.

Phony Benoni: It has a psychological cause. Here is where the problem is studied:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Center...

Nov-10-11  Jim Bartle: I remember that drop by Jackie Smith vs. Pittsburgh in the Superbowl. He just had too, too much time to think about it, with nobody anywhere close to him. Had he been even vaguely covered I'm sure he would have held onto it.

I remember one of the first games I ever went to while at college. Somehow Stanford had stuck with USC and OJ deep into the fourth quarter, and were driving with the score 24-24. Plunkett (sophomore in his first big game) was hitting Gene Washington for big gains all game long. Then he hit Washington in stride wide open with room to run on a third down, and he just plain dropped it. They punted, USC came down and got the winning field goal (after OJ, trapped behind the line, threw a pass for a key first down).

Remember it like it was yesterday.

Nov-11-11  King Death: <Jim Bartle> Just like yesterday, I remember Jackie Smith dropping that ball too. I was in a bar that night in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, happy that the Cowboys had gotten back in the game, and he blew it. I wanted to break some furniture.
Nov-11-11  Jim Bartle: Smith was in his last year, maybe 38 years ago, wasn't the starter, and I don't think he'd caught a pass all year. Maybe a pass hadn't been thrown his way all year, since he was used as a blocker. What must have been going through his mind as the ball came his way.
Nov-11-11  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, just got back from vacation! Here's a video my girlfriend shot of me catching a wave. I'm in the record books now!! Riding this wave was a breeze compared to dodging 2 great white sharks and trying to keep my balance on all those plastic bags littering the ocean surface! ; P

WannaBe: Pretty funny scene yesterday, Friday night, during the Carrier game between UNC and MSU, they often had cut-aways to Stanford, where ESPN Game Day is doing their promo and telecast.

All the student (body) just walks by don't even stop, wave, say hi mom...

I think, it was Kirk Herbstreit, made the comment, that Stanford students don't even stop by the booth and wave.

Too busy studying on Friday night, I guess. =)

Nov-12-11  Jim Bartle: "Too busy studying on Friday night, I guess."

If so, that's a big change from 1972.

Good. I always found the idiots in the background waving to be impossibly annoying. Don't get me started on losers in the stands at baseball and basketball games.

Nov-12-11  Calli: Thanks for the tip on Stockholm 1906.

NEW SOURCE! The Hathi Trust at U of Mich makes available many more chess books that Google keeps hidden because they still in copyright in Europe. I have added 10 tournaments to the collection Game Collection: Chess Tournaments at Google Books & Hathi Trust Click any of the links with "handle" in the url to go to Hathi. It is a little slower and you can't download unless you are a member school.

Phony Benoni: I was concerned about that aircraft carrier game. Kept worrying that a player would dive out of bounds for a loose ball and wind up going overboard.

Phony Benoni: The Toledo Rockets are in an odd rut. Last week, they lost by three points to Northern Illinois. This week, they beat Western Michigan by three points.

So Advanced Algebra informs us that they have scored and allowed the same number of points the last two weeks. And what do you think that number is? A hint: both games finished in regulation; no overtime.

Would you believe <126>?

Nov-12-11  Jim Bartle: OCF: "I always found the idiots in the background waving to be impossibly annoying. Don't get me started on losers in the stands at baseball and basketball games."

I'm trying to figure out whether I qualify as an idiot or a loser, or both.
