Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: News break, Coach K. ties B. Knight in victories.

Reaction: Yeah, so what?!?! K. is still behind in chair throwing.

Nov-12-11  Jim Bartle: Tree chainsawed.

WannaBe: So, we are left with LSU, and OK. State, with an outside shot of Houston U.

If LSU and OK. State win out, BCS will probably be theirs, but if one of them should stumble, woooo watch out. (I really don't see Alabama jumping over an undefeated OK. St.)

Houston will get treated as Boise State or TCU last year, (if they are undefeated) give them a good bowl, thank you for coming, etc, etc, etc, etc...

If houston should lose, see 2010 Boise State. Didn't they end up at Las Vegas Bowl? Or Freedom Bowl? Or was it the Poulan Weedeater Bowl?

Phony Benoni: Or the Herman Cain Bowl, where the final score is 9-9 in nine overtimes. (Sorry, I don't go groping for humor.)

Or the Rick Perry Bowl, where they invite three teams but one forgets to come.

Or the Mitt Romney Bowl, which has the best game with the lead constanly changing hands but everybody still keeps falling asleep..

Or the Ron Paul Bowl, played without referees.

tpstar: <Phony Benoni> Does any college football team have more horrific outfits than Maryland? I clicked by the Notre Dame game yesterday and saw these strange schizophrenic helmets and uniforms: half red/white, and half yellow/black. I realize sports is not a fashion show, but I cannot believe those hard-to-look-at get-ups were designed by professionals.
Nov-13-11  YouRang: <Design of Maryland college football uniforms>

http://content.usatoday.com/communi...

Looks like an example of what can be accomplished when a committee is willing to compromise.

Nov-13-11  Jim Bartle: "Ugly" isn't a strong enough word for those Maryland uniforms. That's gotta hurt when trying to recruit top players.

My favorite uniforms were the UCLA powder-blue ones; don't know why they don't use them any more.

WannaBe: I am so glad that M. Vick have that big contract signed, imagine what it would be like if he didn't have all the money incentive to play hard.

Don't know which team is more pathetic, the 'Skins, or the Eagles.

T. Tebow completed 2, that's right two, passes today. No words if both passes were Hail Marys. Tebow's line: 2/8 69 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, QB rating of 102.6

Methinkth, Mr. Phony and Mr. Travis are having their eyes full watching TV, either that, or they are out in the parking lot having a 'discussion' on the merits of early Bd2 in the Benoni, Meran counter-gambit.

Nov-13-11  Jim Bartle: One Tebow completion I saw was a bomb that fluttered in the air a long time. But the guy was open deep and he hit him.

WannaBe: Is 2 completions the least amount ever?
Nov-13-11  Jim Bartle: An announcer today said there was a game in the 70s where Buffalo's Joe Ferguson had no completions at all. And in the same game Namath went 2 for 18.

I suspect the weather was less than ideal.

Phony Benoni: I turned the game off after the second Lions fumble in the first five minutes, and took a nap. Just got back. Pick-six for the Bears.

Good night.

Nov-13-11  Jim Bartle: Well, then it seems you missed an awful lot of passing by Stafford. 59 attempts! And 2 TDs, unfortunately they were both for da Bears.

Phony Benoni: Finished at 63 attempts, and even threw a touchdown to a Lions player. Glad he remembered how.

Lions gave this one away, 21 points on interception and punt returns, and another 10 following fumbles in Lions' territory. The Lions' defense actually played pretty well, but nobody will remember that.

Nov-13-11  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, I want to apologize to you about that Bears Lions game. The Bears played well on defense and special teams but the Bears need to work on their offensive output. ; P

Phony Benoni: Travis, the Bears didn't need to play offense. The Lions did it for them!
Nov-13-11  Jim Bartle: But what about the Bears playing in orange jerseys?

If they're not in dark blue, they're not the Bears.

Nov-13-11  I play the Fred: Drew Brees update: on pace for 5321 yards with six games remaining.

WannaBe: From ESPN.com (of course, where else do I go to do my 'research'??)

<• Faulkner University defeated Union (Ky.) College 95-89 in triple overtime in Montgomery, Ala., on Saturday, breaking an NAIA record with 184 points in the game. The total surpassed the previous mark of 141 set in 1994 and was the second-highest scoring game in college football history, only outdone by Georgia Tech's famous 222-0 victory over Cumberland in 1916. Faulker set an NAIA record with 14 touchdowns and quarterback Josh Hollingsworth threw for an NAIA-record 637 yards with seven touchdown passes and one scoring reception.

• Navy didn't complete a single pass in its 24-17 victory over SMU on Saturday. The Midshipmen, who ran for 335 yards in the game, improved to 4-6 and will play in the Military Bowl if they defeat San Jose State and Army in their last two games. Navy has completed only 55 passes all season and completed more than seven passes in a game only once this season. >

(Did Tebow attend Naval Academy? Is that why he only completed 2 passes??)

Nov-14-11  Jim Bartle: The wishbone-option sort of attack has gone out of fashion, it seems, but I remember when a lot of teams like Oklahoma and Texas had quarterbacks who were primarily runners and could hardly pass. In the 60s and 70s powerhouses like Ohio State and Michigan hardly passed at all.

WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> The main reason why Troy Aikman transferred from Oklahoma to UCLA was he didn't want to run the option, he wanted to throw the ball.
