Nov-14-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Tim Tebow, the Offensive Juggernaut, could never have played in this game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u41y...
The two teams punted a total of 45 times, occasionally on first down. Michigan won despite not getting a single first down and going 0-9 in pass attempts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_B...(1950) |
|
| Nov-14-11 | | Jim Bartle: Wannabe: But today Aikman would stay at Oklahoma and pass the ball. And they ended up with Jamelle Holieway and Charles Thompson, who were probably better option QBs than Aikman. Though didn't Thompson end up in jail as a drug trafficker? |
|
| Nov-14-11 | | Jim Bartle: Have any college option QBs become successful NFL QBs? I can't think of any at the moment, though some (Jack Mildren, Nolan Cromwell, several who became receivers) were successful at other positions. |
|
Nov-14-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Well, Jeff Rutledge was a backup most of his career, but also a member of three Super Bowl teams. But if you're talking real stars, I can't find any. |
|
Nov-14-11
 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> Well, Troy A. 'Optioned' out of Okla. and he was pretty decent in the NFL, won some championships, so I heard. Plus he got a whole bunch of 'contusions' for staying in the pocket too long... Maybe should have stayed at Oklahoma. |
|
Nov-15-11
 | | WannaBe: I, too, would have picked football than going to Rhode Island... http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/footba... |
|
| Nov-15-11 | | Jim Bartle: Option quarterbacks get hit a lot more often than dropback quarterbacks. The option attack could work in the NFL, except that it's too difficult to keep the quarterback healthy. |
|
Nov-15-11
 | | WannaBe: Well, somebody better get me a bowl of Alphabet soup, and a bowl of Alphabit cereal, I have to eat my words from earlier post regarding Cy Young Award for Amer. League. Verlander is the unanimous winner of C.Y. Even the SoCal baseball writers voted for him as first choice! (Bet Weaver is happy about that.) |
|
| Nov-15-11 | | Jim Bartle: Unanimous for Verlander! |
|
Nov-15-11
 | | WannaBe: I think unanimous is the premature headline, CC got 2 first-place votes. I also saw that headline on espn.com Courtesy of G. Easterbrook, espn.com, page 2 columnist: <Stats of the Week No. 6: The Eagles have been outscored 74-20 in the fourth quarter.> Maybe Eagles strength and conditioning coach need to go? How can your defensive team guys be sucking air in the 4th? How about a short nap during half-time? A lot of companies allow employees to nap after lunch. Boosts afternoon stamina and energy. Look, the Eagles plays a lot of their games on Eastern time, 8 games at home, plus trip to NY, possibly NE, Buff, etc... But that's not the point, the point is, your kick-off is 1PM, by half time, your team is sleepy, tired, what's better than a half-time nap?! (Not like you're gonna sit there and actually listen to Andy Reid? Boy, that'd put <ME> to sleep.) |
|
Nov-15-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> The only way Sabbathia got two first place votes is if the guys from New York voted for C.C. Verlander. I wonder how deep the Eagles are on defense this year? The current trend in the NFL, especially on the defensive line, is to rotate players in and out frequently. Since Philadelphia went so heavily for Star Power this year, they may not have enough quality players to fill in when the regulars sit out for a few plays. |
|
| Nov-15-11 | | Jim Bartle: I don't know if he was the first, but with the 49ers Bill Walsh always rotated in and out seven or eight defensive linemen, plus quite a bit with the linebackers as well, with the exception of the stars like Keena Turner. |
|
Nov-15-11
 | | Phony Benoni: I first noticed the Lions shuffling, then it looked like other teams were trying it as well. Makes sense. Might keep the linemen fresher, particularly at the end of the game when the other team goes no huddle. By the way, anyone else seen the end of regulation in the Saints - Falcons on Sunday? You know the cliché: if a team goes into a prevent defense near the end of the game, at least one commentator is required to state that he doesn't like the strategy because "All it does is prevent you from winning." It must be in their contract. So the Saints have a seven-point lead with under two minutes remaining, but continue to play their aggressive, blitzing defense. Falcons go 92 yards with no timeouts and send the game into overtime. Commentators, demonstrating flexibility worthy of a presidential candidate, lambaste the Saints' strategy. And all I can think is, "Matt Millen". |
|
Nov-15-11
 | | WannaBe: Okay, conflicting stories abound, now on ESPN, they are saying CC did not get any 1st place votes, Weaver came in second in the voting, Verlander did receive all 28 first-place votes. |

Nov-16-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Trauma in Texas:
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp... I'm sure having the Astros in the AL will please most of the franchises, who can look forward to an extra win or two each year. This will also mean perpetual interleague play, since both leagues will have an odd number of teams. They really should make the DH consistent now. I prefer the game without it, but the players might file a grievance at the behest of the Dave Kingman Caucus. Besides, more hitting breeds more fan interest which breeds more $MONEY$, so they'll keep it. |
|
Nov-16-11
 | | WannaBe: Chicks dig the long ball, remember that one? |
|
| Nov-16-11 | | I play the Fred: Chicks dig the long ball, remember that one?
"C'mon Alice, step into it!" LOL
On a more serious note, I hate that the Astros may be going to the AL. I wouldn't mind so much if the AL didn't play video game baseball. |
|
Nov-16-11
 | | WannaBe: I think Maddon should send at least a dozen roses and chocolates, plus a hearty thank you card to BoSox. |
|
| Nov-17-11 | | Jim Bartle: You can't have an odd number of teams in either league. I just can't see there being at least one interleague series being played at all times. Whitey Herzog discussed this problem in "You're Missing a Great Game" during one period of expansion, don't remember which one. |
|
Nov-17-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> That's the plan, interleague play throughout the year. In principle, it's no different than interconference play in the NFL or any other major sport. Baseball has a very strong tradition of head-to-head play, particularly down the stretch. |
|
Nov-17-11
 | | WannaBe: 2013 baby! Interleague every day, okay, maybe not during the off days of the All-Star break. Tiger and teammate tied for worst loss ever, 7 up 6. Ouch! |
|
Nov-17-11
 | | WannaBe: C. Kershaw wins Cy Young! In a route! This is 10th Cy Young for the Dodgers as a team. Don Newcombe (1956)
Don Drysdale (1962)
Sandy Koufax (1963, '65 and '66)
Mike Marshall (1974)
Fernando Valenzuela (1981)
Orel Hershiser (1988)
Eric Gagne (2003)*
Clayton Kershaw (2011)
*Steroid?! |
|
Nov-17-11
 | | WannaBe: 93K+ voters on espn.com, 69% voted for 15/15 2 league format, with 31% voted for 16/14 2 league format. |
|
| Nov-17-11 | | Jim Bartle: I'm with the 31%.
Dodgers have definitely had a lot of great pitchers, and great years, though not quite as many in recent seasons. |
