Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Feb-15-13  playground player: <WannaBe> Journalism school? Hahahahahaha...!

Years ago, when I was a newspaper editor, the publisher compelled me to hire a guy who came with great glowing recommendations from the U. of Missouri School of Journalism, one of the top J-schools in the country. As a reporter, this man was about as useful as a cigar store Indian. He would come back from his assignments with no information at all, and someone else would have to retrace his steps. Example: He came back from a school board meeting once and said "nothing happened"; I had someone check, and we discovered the board had just voted to spend millions of dollars to double the size of the high school. I don't know if he could write a sentence that made sense or not: we never used any of his sentences.

I remain convinced that if you don't have what it takes to be a reporter, no amount of education will ever make you one.

Phony Benoni: <playground player> That's true in many fields, including chess, alas. Knowing how to do something is a far cry from being able to do it.

Those who can, do.

Those who can't do, teach.

Those who can't teach, become administrators.

Those who can't adminstrate, become kibitzers.

Feb-15-13  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, then there's players like me who buy many chess books never read them and become a chess hack. ; P

Phony Benoni: Hey, Travis, I hear you there. I always had more fun reading books than playing.

I remember once, in a completely busted position, reaching into my chess bag and pulling out a copy of "Saving Lost Positions" by Shamkovich. I flipped through the pages, and began alternating glances at the book and the board. Then I nodded my head sagely, closed the book--and resigned.

You can only do that against good friends who appreciate your sense of humor.

Feb-16-13  Travis Bickle: Phony do you have any chess instructional dvd's? I have quite a few. I have 3 Garry Kasparov dvd's two on the Najdorf & 1 on how to play the Queens Gambit, Alexei Shirov's best games on the white side of the Sicilian, Rustam Kasimdzhanov on The Kings Indian Defense, Nigel Davies on The English opening, IM Andrew Martin on 7 different lines on The Ruy Lopez, Karsten Mueller on Rook Endgames & a couple of special dvd's one on World Champion Fischer by Robert Huebner & a 2 dvd set by Victor Korchnoi's "My Life For Chess". I have viewed most of these. I ordered them from Chessbase. I go by the theory of 1 picture is worth a thousand words. ; P

Phony Benoni: Travis, I had about given up collecting when DVDs started to appear. Besides, I couldn't have afforded them with all the books I <HAD> to have.

At its peak, my collection totalled over 1500 books, largely historical in nature (biographies, tournament books, games collections), plus long runs of magazines like Informant, Chess Life, Tournament chess, Chess Player, New Chess Player, British Chess Magazine, and many others. I've often regretted having to sell it off, no more than now when I'm trying to do research around here.

I went on the theory that one game was worth a thousand pictures.

Hey, Travis, is he going to be their closer?

Phony Benoni: How can the money be wrong, Travis? Some of these guys are making more per game than Koufax made in a year. I know there's been some inflation, but that's global warming!
Feb-23-13  Travis Bickle: Sandy wants to get a Real Big pay day for all the years he was jipped in the 60's.
Feb-24-13  playground player: I was brought up to hate the Dodgers, but I can't help acknowledging that Sandy Koufax was the greatest pitcher I ever saw.

Given the conditions of baseball today, maybe he could pitch a few innings. I mean, how old was John Franco when he finally retired? 77, right?

Feb-24-13  Jim Bartle: What about Jaime Moyer and Jesse Orosco? And that's without even mentioning the knuckleballers.
Feb-24-13  playground player: Bill "Spaceman" Lee pitched (and won) a complete game in the minors last year. Maybe he'll come back, too.
