Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Apr-28-13  Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle: "...The Bears always take linebackers..." Keep trying, they'll find a good one eventually.> Bill George, Dick Butkus, Doug Buffone, Mike Singletary, Wilbur Marshall, Otis Wilson, Ron Rivera, Brian Urlacher... Yeah Jim the Bears just can't seem to find a good one.
Apr-28-13  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: Yeah, linebackers are human. The Bears' linebackers aren't.> LOL!!!
Apr-28-13  Jim Bartle: Travis, I said they'd find one, not ten!

And the Bears still owe the Giants and 49ers a big thank you for picking Tucker Fredericksen and Ken Willard and leaving Butkus for the Bears. Sayers, too.

Apr-28-13  Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> The Bears couldn't help the inept Draft preparation of The Giants & the 49ers that year.

P.S. Maybe The Bears should thank the 49ers also for ending Sayers career with a dirty vicious hit!

Apr-28-13  Jim Bartle: That was against the Niners?

It was really a shame Sayers had such a short career.

Apr-28-13  Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> Yeah those kind of athletes only come around once in a lifetime. 6 touchdowns in 1 game!

Apr-29-13  Jim Bartle: I don't know the college players well any more, Travis, especially since quarterbacks and running backs weren't being picked at the top.

Phony Benoni: Sorry, Travis, but I've got this first-place baseball team to worry about. Can't spread myself too thin.
Apr-29-13  Travis Bickle: Well Jim you're team is a juggernaut that just got an A- Draft to boot!
Apr-29-13  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, ya don't have to rub it in. LOL! Well we got Those Blackhawks the greatest show on ice in Chi town anyway.

I'm a football guy, like Jon Gruden, John Madden & Vince Lombardi, I'm NFL all year round. ; P

WannaBe: Woo, hockey play-off talk, the team that have won the President's Trophy, have not won the Cup in about 15 years...

I think, without looking it up, but I know it's one of the hockey 'jinx'.

Apr-29-13  Travis Bickle: <WannaBe> Dear Mr. Bunny, you need to get out of your burrow more frequently than to get a handful of carrots and a sixer of beer. The Chicago Blackhawks my friend won The Stanley Cup in 2010!! ; P

Phony Benoni: Travis, everyone here in Detroit is ecstatic that the Red Wings managed to sneak into 7th place and avoid the Blackhawks in the first round. I don't agree with that mindset. If they're such a good team you'll have to play them eventually, so why go in with the idea that they will probably beat you?

Most experts I've seen have picked Chicago and Pittsburgh for the finals if Sidney Crosby is able to play for the Penguins.

By the way, did you notice that all the Original Six teams made the playoffs? That hasn't happened for a while.

First, I hope all goes well today.

Second, I am taking the liberty of posting an announcement about the <Rinus Award> on your forum. In part, it is because of your leadership and the tone you set, and in part it is because folks from that page will be coming here to drop off links to the new POTDs. I hope this is ok. If not, feel free to delete the information.

Thanks--hms123

<<Announcement of Rinus Award>> We typically try to make an award four times a year. In general, first priority for a <Rinus Award> goes to a non-premium member who makes an excellent contribution to one of the <World vs. GM> games hosted by <chessgames.com>. When there is a break between <World> games, the committee has made an award to someone on another part of the website who has made excellent contributions in that area (e.g., <ChessBookForum>, POTD page).

At this point in the year, it looks to us as though there will be a long break between <World> games. After reading over posts from the last 40 POTD games, the committee (<WinKing>, <kutztown46>, <morfishine>, and me) found many excellent contributors to the on-going conversations that the POTD group has every day. One contributor, however, stood out. Not only did this person make consistent, excellent analytic contributions, he also represented the best of <chessgames.com> in his conduct and in his contributions to the creation of a healthy atmosphere at <chessgames.com>.

It is with great pleasure that User: WinKing User: kutztown46 User: morfishine and I announce that User: Bartimaeus will be receiving a <Rinus Award>of a year-long premium membership as soon as it is activated. I have already notified the chessgames.com administrators. Our thanks go to all of you who are regulars at the POTD pages. You set a terrific example of what a chess community should be like.
