Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

   Jun-10-22 L T Magee vs E L Holland, 1948 (replies)

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: I would have liked to had Tevon Austin on the Lions; they could use a play maker.

The actual choice was a bit of a surprise. Detroit really needed offensive line help, but with the three premier linemen going in the top four picks they apparently went the "best athlete" route. Probably helped that he's a character guy; after all, BYU athletes are known for their strict Mormon standards. Like Jim McMahon.

Apr-25-13  Travis Bickle: Yeah Phony, Jim McMahon was like a choirboy. ; P

P.S. I pray we don't take that flake MLB from Notre Dame!

Apr-25-13  Travis Bickle: I hope The Bears take Ogletree.
Apr-25-13  Travis Bickle: Yo da Bears got Howie Longs boy, a big boy too!
Apr-25-13  Jim Bartle: Barkevious Mingo!
Apr-25-13  Travis Bickle: I think they should put Geno Smith on suicide watch. ; P
Apr-25-13  Jim Bartle: (Geno Smith) Aaron Rodgers went at the end of the first round, after the Niners took Alex Smith #1.

Doesn't matter when a guy is drafted, only how good a player he is.

Apr-25-13  hangingenprise: da bears make a solid pick. their o-line is very goood now phony! watch out come sept 5. is it sept. yet the start of the season?
Apr-25-13  Jim Bartle: I would be happy never reading or hearing the following ever again: upside, project, next level, "let's go to Mel Kiper."

Phony Benoni: So the Lions' first round draft pick Ezekiel "Ziggy" Ansah (I kid you not), a defensive end originally from Ghana (I kid you not) gets asked if he hates quarterbacks.

"Oh, no. I like to grab and hug people I love, so I guess I love quarterbacks."

I think this guy is going to wind up in the broadcast booth someday.

Apr-27-13  Jim Bartle: I don't remember Anibal Sanchez at all, and here he strikes out 17 against Atlanta, the best team going. Too bad it was 10-0, so no suspense.
Apr-27-13  Jim Bartle: Ansah was just repeating what he'd heard from Suh about loving quarterbacks.
Apr-27-13  hangingenprise: phony: the best thing about getting warford is that the cowgirls did not get him! yahoo.

ziggy is a very good player, but how is he going to give "the love" to your pal travis most improved o-line that is not a sive anymore?

what about the lions 0-line especially since they were not too great in the red zone?

Apr-27-13  hangingenprise: holly smoking mirrors batman the traiders take wilson from arkansas!! i am shocked. the godfather, gil brandt, liked him very much and like he said he needs work, but has great up-side. sorry travis........not
wow!! the traiders actually are having a draft!
Apr-27-13  hangingenprise: lets see: nfl east- giants improved,
eagles improved, redskins improved,
cowgirls...well they have romo yahoo!!!
Apr-27-13  hangingenprise: phony: your pal travis bears are liking line-backers this draft. umm again your o-line?

Phony Benoni: Well, the quality offensive linemen keep getting drafted before the Lions get to the table. The three they had their eyes on went 1,2, and 4, and the Lions were #5.

So far they've gotten a comedian from Ghana, a cornerback with a torn meniscus, and an offensive lineman big enough to blot out the sun which really doesn't help when you play indoors.

The Experts are saying the Lions are having a good draft. Now I'm really worried.

Apr-27-13  Jim Bartle: That's pretty bad luck.

"Hey, we're #5 and we want one of three tackles. Can't miss." Apparently you can.

Apr-27-13  Travis Bickle: <hangingenprise: phony: your pal travis bears are liking line-backers this draft.> Hangin' The Bears always take linebackers. ; P I wish we would have gotten a quality receiver & a CB, our two really good corners are not getting any younger.
Apr-27-13  Jim Bartle: "...The Bears always take linebackers..."

Keep trying, they'll find a good one eventually.

Phony Benoni: Yeah, linebackers are human. The Bears' linebackers aren't.
