Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: So the Tigers hit a Rays player in the bottom of the first.

I know why they do this. It's about standing up for yourself and your team, and not being intimidated. But it usually escalates further, and soon you've got another Middle East crisis with both sides claiming the other started it.

I wish they could just get over the whole idea that retaliation is the only way to prove your manhood. But then, I'm a low testosterone kind of guy anyway.

And I guess it's still better than Ty Cobb's way. He would drag a bunt down the first base line, forcing the pitcher to field the ball and providing the opportunity for an accidental collison.

Phony Benoni: Max Scherzer is now 13-0 after a 6-2 victory over Toronto.

Every team seems to have one pitcher who always gets run support, and this year on the Tigers it's been Scherzer. It's gotten so bad that last Saturday the only runs the Tigers scored came during the inning Scherzer was being interviewed on Fox.

Phony Benoni: Every July 4th we stop for a moment to remember this game:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Six hours of play, plus two hours of rain delay, meant the scheduled postgame fireworks show began around 4:00 AM.

"Ball hit puddle (now deeper) and stopped."

Jul-04-13  playground player: <Phony Benoni> Oh, yeah, we remember that game! <Mrs. PGP> and I stayed up very late indeed, watching it on TV. At the ballpark, they ran out of supplies at the concession stands. Up in the broadcast booth, Ralph Kiner and Tim McCarver got kind of loopy with fatigue. And the game just went on and on and on. Kiner was worried about what people would think when the fireworks started going off at 4 or 5 in the morning. A true endurance test!

Phony Benoni: Another great July 4th game:

http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/l...

Look at the top of the second column for the doubleheader between the Red Sox and Athletics. Nothing special in the first game, but the second game turned into a 20-inning duel between Cy Young and Rube Waddell, the Athletics prevailing on a stagger-off home run.

Note that both pitchers went all the way. Note that both catcher went all the way. Note that Waddell also pitched in the first game.

Phony Benoni: <OCF> I get the feeling there was more to that situation than a disagreement on the field. At least, I hope so.

Not that I'm too surprised. There are plenty of violent reactions among participants and fans already. But something like this is beyond the pale.

OK, it was a bonehead moment for Swisher, but it's unfair to say he could have had an infield single. If he's husting, the catcher just picks up the ball in foul territory.

perfidious: Who would ever have thought this day would come? Yankees looking to boost a feeble lineup, in that ballpark, by trading the enigmatic Phil Hughes:

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/j...

Looks from here as though the percentages have caught up with the pinstripers; there are only so many times one can come up with treasure from the waiver wire, in the expectation that, having been cast aside, these players are anything more than a shadow of glory long since gone.

Not all the other MLB talent evaluators can be wrong.
