Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Oct-23-13  technical draw: Well, World Series starts tonight and world famous psychic El Predicto will now give you the final results: Cardinals in six. Call your bookie today and bet your house, you can't lose.*

perfidious: Going with Bawston in seven.
Oct-23-13  technical draw: Ernie Banks, Phil Neikro, Gaylord Perry, Andre Dawson, Rod Carew y George Sisler were great players that never played in the World Series. But it's no big deal, I haven't either.

perfidious: <td>: Those great players are lucky they never had to face my murderous left-handed heat either, I'll have you know.

Y'all thought Koufax was something-I'd have been lucky to break a pane o' glass!

Phony Benoni: Ever since I was sharply corrected for calling the Cardinals a "speed" team, I've kept quiet about the Series. Of course, I was comparing them to the Tigers, and compared to the Tigers Auntie Flo's Softball Ladies are a speed team.

The ALCS turned when Ortiz hit that grand slam in game 2. If the Tigers just hold that lead, they go home with a 2-0 lead and confidence; as it was, they never recovered and only won by beating up on Jake Peavy. the weakest point in the Boston rotation.

If the Sox can find a way against the Tigers' power arms, they can stand up to the Cardinals. Probably no a sweep, but Boston in 6 sounds about right.

Which, of course, means that you should stock up on Redbirds memorabilia immediately.

Final word on Cabrera's injury. Grade 2 or 3 groin pull or tear; the sportscasters here are wusses and don't go into details. At any rate (1) It wasn't going to get better in the short run; (2) he will probably need surgery, but even with the rehab should be ready for spring training.

Had this happened in April, he surely goes DL and comes back when he's ready. In September, he probably wouldn't be right until after the postseason. Maybe he shouldn't have gutted it out, but Cabrera is a very proud man.

WannaBe: Great, <TD> says Cards in 6, <PB> says Sox in 6.

Which means Yankees will win a sweep.

perfidious: Repulski was sent down to D ball, but Enos Slaughter should prove a capable fill-in.

Hmmm. Well, on need to get excited. Let's remember the Larry Sherry World Series:

Oct-24-13  Jim Bartle: Larry Sherry.Sort of a one-year wonder.

Letting that popup fall untouched tonight was one of the most embarrassing plays I've ever seen.

And the really need to pad the railing along the rightfield fence.

Oct-24-13  technical draw: <Which means Yankees will win a sweep.>

You're right. The Yankees obtained the contract to clean the stadium after the game.

With Sam Bradford out for the season, the St. Louis Rams contact Brett Favre to fill in. I think Missouri would be the perfect place for Favre. After all, it is the "Show-Me State".

OK, so I'm no Howard Cosell, or John Madden. =))

Oct-24-13  Jim Bartle: I watched a baseball game with Howard Cosell as "analyst." he was really, really terrible, all wrong in style, and not knowledgeable either. He was great at boxing and OK in football, but baseball--forget it.

WannaBe: The World Series is tied 1 game a piece, (or is that apiece?), and we go to StL for 3 games on Sat-Mon.
Oct-25-13  hms123: <WannaBe>

<tied 1 game a piece, (or is that apiece?>

How about <tied at one game each>?

Actually, I think it should be <a piece>. This is the problem with going from idiomatic speech to written prose.

WannaBe: Just double-check'd the NFL schedule, TB Bucs do not play JAX Jags this year.

Potential 2 0-fer teams.

Oct-25-13  Jim Bartle: I remember years ago there was a game similar to Tampa-Jacksonville.

The ESPN wrapup show then was Chris Berman, Tom Jackson and Robin Roberts.

When it came time to recap this dog of a game, Roberts said, "How did I know I was going to get this one?"
