Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

perfidious: <Jim>: Ten years ago, used to be a lot of barnburners on Sunday Night Football in particular, because that game tended to serve as the dumping ground in fulfilling the requirement that all teams had to get at least one prime time appearance per season.

Nowadays, it seems as though Sundays are frequently the marquee matchups and many MNF games are the afterthoughts.

Oct-25-13  Jim Bartle: Definitely. Sunday and Monday have switched in importance. Al Michaels does Sunday, and John Madden used to. That's a tipoff (aside from the quality of the matchups).

perfidious: <Jim>: There are numerous Sunday nights I remember leaving my office back then, in the middle of such sterling affairs as Arizona-SF and not regretting having missed the first half one whit.

WannaBe: The problem is MNF's schedule is known in advance, while 1/2(?) of SNF is set, and then this flex schedule kicks in.

One year (maybe about 5 years ago) MNF schedule looked great when it was released, by week 6, you had 1-5 vs. 2-4, ouch!

Oct-26-13  Jim Bartle: Pete Rose would have already been standing on second when Ellsbury dropped that ball.

  WannaBe: I don't think I have either.
Oct-27-13  Jim Bartle: I think that was a limp-off. Craig appears to be injured again.

Sox seem incapable of throwing from home to third.

Phony Benoni: Actually, I'm more optimistic about my prediction of Red Sox in 6. Before the World Series, that was 1 of 8 possible outcomes, so I had only a 12.5% chance of being right. Now there are are only five possible outcomes, so my odds have increased to 20%!
Oct-27-13  Jim Bartle: Except the only way that can happen is three straight Sox wins. If each game is a tossup, that's still 12.5%. Sox in six is now the least likely of the five remaining possibilities.

Phony Benoni: <JB> Hmmm. Maybe that's why I suck at Chess Bookie.

I think the actual percentage is less that 12.5%, since the series might not go three more games. Let's try listing the pssibilities:

1 B-B-B
2 B-B-S-B
3 B-B-S-S
4 B-S-B-B
5 B-S-B-S
6 B-S-S
7 S-B-B-B
8 S-B-B-S
9 S-B-S
10 S-S

So unless I've missed something, the chances are 1/2 or 10%. WannaBe's Cards in6 as a 20% chance.

Oct-27-13  Jim Bartle: I just figured chances of winning three straight coin flips is one in eight, 12.5%.

Each of the possibilities you list is not equally probable.

Oct-27-13  Jim Bartle: If we're looking only at results of a 6-game sries, there are eight possibilities:

BBB
BBS
BSB
BSS
SSS
SSB
SBB
SBS

Boston wins one of the eight.

By pure chance their odds on winning the Series are 5/16.

Phony Benoni: But SSS and SSB are not six-game possibilities, since the series will be over in 5.

WannaBe: Oh, forget that B and S, or BS. Let's talk about Lions beating Cowboys!

I had Detroit written off as a lose, but they stormed back!

Oct-27-13  Jim Bartle: I cannot believe it. I self-Heidied myself! I turned it off at 30-24.

Phony Benoni: I had to keep it on. Part of being a Lions fan is watching how they will manage to blow every possible chance.

I still can't decide if they deserved to win that game or not.

Oct-27-13  Jim Bartle: I was figurig they were about to do something else pretty rare, lose by the same score (27-24) two weeks in a row.

WannaBe: Let's hope for a high scoring MNF game, 48 pts total, I split the pot, over that I win the whole thing.
Oct-27-13  hangingenprise: phony: what a game! I turned it off when the cowgirls had the ball, but turned it back on just as the lions got the ball back. lucky me! you know your pal travis is waiting for the rematch. da bears
