Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

perfidious: <Jim>: Early speculation is that prospect Nelson Castellanos will get a shot at third, or that Tigers may re-sign Peralta and play him there, leaving Iglesias at short.

In any case, they have freed up a bundle of payroll to take a flyer on re-signing Scherzer to a long-term deal. One would think that rebuilding their bullpen would be a high priority, and dealing one of their six starters could help towards that end.

Phony Benoni: <perfidious> Nick Castellanos is the usual answer at third around here right now. It's his natural position. They were trying to convert him into an outfielder this year, but the trade will end that experiment. No talk of resigning Peralta, but it might make sense.

Besides Scherzer, they now have some freedom to work on Cabrera's contract; he's only signed through 2015.

As for the bullpen they're making a pitch for Joe Nathan as closer, which would allow Benoit to move back to his more comfortable set-up role. Outside of that, there is little talk about the bullpen. Remember that St. Louis and Boston both did quite well in the bullpen without blockbuster deals, and the Tigers might be thinking the same thing.

A lot depends on the health of phenon Bruce Rondon. If he can return at full strength, the bullpen looks a lot better. If he can't pitch, they'll be scrambling. Porcello would be the most likely trade bait among the starters, since his value would be good right now.

There's also talk of signing a free agent outfieldeer like Jacoby Ellsbury or Carlos Beltran. Centerfielder Austin Jackson may be trade bait.

Nov-23-13  Jim Bartle: Cabrera will be 33 starting the 2016 season, right? Past signings show it's dangerous to sign players that age to very big long-term contracts. The Tigers at least need to be careful.

At least getting Kinsler means they're probably not interested in Cano, who wants a laughable anount of money.

I wouldn't be interested in Beltran, but definitely in Ellsbury.

Phony Benoni: The next couple of years will be interesting, to see if Cabrera's injury problems in 2013 were a sign of things to come.
Nov-23-13  Jim Bartle: But he's a relatively slow runner even when healthy, right? Those are typically the players who don't age well.

What's the news on Cano? Is anybody interested in a monster longterm contract for him? I wouldn't be.

Phony Benoni: $30 mil a year for 10 years? Cano's good, but he's no Joe Morgan.

Hard to see anybody but the Yankees paying that. Second Base is not a position that is going to make or break a team.

Nov-23-13  Shams: One thing's for sure: the Angels aren't going to pay him that much.
Nov-23-13  Jim Bartle: Plus, Cano is not a hustling player. A bit od a dog, in fact.

perfidious: Seems to me that, by all indications, Cano will mostly likely re-sign with NY, but somewhere between his price and the rumoured ~$160m for ten years. Few teams will want to take on that sort of money, or can, really.

Had not read anything of Jackson being moved, and that comes as something of a surprise, being one of Tigers' strengths.

Latest news on Beltran has him possibly returning to his old haunt of KC. That is a team on the rise for the first time in many years and he would provide a useful veteran presence for their young talent.

  Phony Benoni: Free Agent list:

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/transa...

Shin-Soo Choo is another outfielder the Tigers are interested in. Slim pickings at 3B, Juan Uribe at the top of the list. I could almost be tempted into taking a chance on A.J. Pierzynski.

Over on the pitching side:

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/transa...

Joe Nathan and Brian Wilson at the top of the bullpen. I see tha Fernando Rodney is back on the market, and the Tigers have a habit of taking back old friends.

perfidious: <PB>: Choo has his choice of suitors and Ellsbury will also have several, though his market will be circumscribed to an extent by Scott Boras' representation, necessitating massive demands for a player who has never put together consecutive big seasons.
Nov-24-13  Jim Bartle: Most amazing/stupid TD for Giants against Dallas. Guy catches a pass falling down at the 10. Two Fallas defenders just stand beside him. Giants receiver gets up and runs into the end zone fot a TD.

4th talker: Yeah, I never thought there was anything wrong with the team name until I saw how bad they are.

5th talker: Let's start a petition to rename them the Palefaces.

Phony Benoni: Every Lions fan who watched that Sunday Night game had to be thinking, "Marty Mornhinweg was right after all?"

He was the Lions Head Coach who basically lost his job because he took the wind in overtime, whereupon the Bears scored on their first possession to win.

Which proves once again that for head coaches the difference between being a Genius and an Idiot is the performance of your players. (And taking into account of the new overtime rules.)

Nov-26-13  playground player: <Esteemed Colleagues and Baseball Mavens> Can you answer these two baseball trivia questions--without looking it up? Just off the tops of your heads?

1. Name three second basemen who hit 40 or more home runs in a season.

2. Who was the first Latino player to hit 30 or more homers in a season, batting left-handed?

Let's see who really knows his baseball history. :)

Nov-26-13  Jim Bartle: Concerning the coin-flip decision in overtime, the situation is different today. Back then a field goal on the first possession ended the game. Now the other team gets a chance after a field goal on the first drive. That certainly affects the decision.
Nov-26-13  technical draw: PP:

1. Joe Morgan et al

2. Bernie Williams
