Dec-15-13
 | | perfidious: <pgp>: Bert Blyleven. |
|
| Dec-15-13 | | Jim Bartle: Williw Mays had 24 homers going into August in 1965, then went on a tear and hit 17 in August. During the month our family went to the city of Berkeley camp in the Sierras. A retired captain stayed in his tent during every game and posted the results on the bulletin board. One day the Giants played a doubleheader and I asked my dad what Mays had done that day. He said, "Hit a homer in each game." I replied, "Did he get any other hits?" That's how much I expected from him back then. |
|
| Dec-15-13 | | Jim Bartle: One day when I can watch NFL games, expecting a big game, and darn it all, Dallas hammered Green Bay, leading 26-3 at the half. The other games don't look so interesting, so I had to do something else. |
|
| Dec-15-13 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> Green bay is about to win! ; P |
|
| Dec-15-13 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, Yer Lions have to win Monday night. ; P |
|
| Dec-15-13 | | Jim Bartle: Quit kidding around, Travis. |
|
Dec-15-13
 | | WannaBe: I do believe, Romo is still winless in December?! Or very close to that. |
|
Dec-15-13
 | | Phony Benoni: Even if I were a betting man, I wouldn't put money on the Lions tomorrow. Third place, here we come! |
|
| Dec-16-13 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, here's an In The Know synopsis from Vegas oddsmakers on MNF!
http://linemakers.sportingnews.com/... |
|
Dec-16-13
 | | Phony Benoni: Travis, I don't put that much truck in handicapping numbers. (And, by the way, I know the Lions are 7-6 with SU, but who is that ATS guy who keeps costing them a game? He needs to be bneched.) All I know is that the results yesterday put extra pressure on the Lions (who don't have a history of rezponding well to it) and given new playoff life to the Ravens (who have proven they know how to take advantage of their opportunities). Until the Lions start winning games like this, I'm not going to have a lot of confidence in them. |
|
| Dec-16-13 | | playground player: <perfidious> You knew that? I'm impressed! |
|
| Dec-16-13 | | Jim Bartle: It was a big deal that Blyleven gave up so many home runs, a major news story when he approached and broke the record in 1986. Jaime Moyer now holds the career record, based largely on longevity I would assume. As we've noted before, he also holds the record for most parks pitched in. |
|
Dec-16-13
 | | Phony Benoni: Moyer's record is well deserved, longetivity notwithstanding. He ended with 522, just seventeen ahead of Robin Roberts' 505, but did so in 600 <fewer> innings. Here's the top ten, with number of innings pitched and "Home Runs Per Nine Innings": 1 Jamie Moyer 522 4074.00 1.153
2 Robin Roberts 505 4688.67 0.969
3 Fergie Jenkins 484 4500.67 0.968
4 Phil Niekro 482 5404 0.803
5 Don Sutton 472 5282.33 0.804
6 Frank Tanana 448 4188.33 0.963
7 Warren Spahn 434 5243.67 0.745
8 Bert Blyleven 430 4970 0.779
9 Tim Wakefield 418 3226.33 1.166
10 Steve Carlton 414 5217.67 0.714
By this measure, Wakefield is the most generous in the group, Carlton the hardest to homer against, and Blyleven actually does better than average. But none of them make the list of Top Ten Gopher Ball Pitchers. This is restricted to pitchers with over 200 home runs allowed, and arranged by HRA: 1 Brian Anderson 1.536
2 Jose Lima 1.533
3 Eric Milton 1.519
4 Rick Helling 1.456
5 Brett Myers 1.300
6 Woody Williams 1.255
7 Steve Trachsel 1.252
8 Ervin Santana 1.222
9 Pedro Ramos 1.207
10 Brad Radke 1.197
Wakefield is 15th on this list, just ahead of Denny McLain and Moyer. 34 pitcherz average more than one home run a game, and none are in the Hall-of-Fame. The highest HRA for an HOF-er is 0.976 for Catfish Hunter. |
|
| Dec-16-13 | | Jim Bartle: I wonder if knuckleballers as a class give up more homers. |
|
Dec-17-13
 | | Phony Benoni: "I am the Ghost of Field Goals Past!" |
|
| Dec-17-13 | | hangingenprise: phony: as your pal travis rally cry of his beloved cubs, wait till next year! again the color announcer states the obvious, the lions with the talent they have just make too many mistakes! |
|
Dec-17-13
 | | WannaBe: In the NFC, the two Wild Card leaders have better record than 2 division leaders. And every team in the NFC East lost this weekend, and every team in the NFC West won. |
|
Dec-17-13
 | | perfidious: <WannaBe....(E)very team in the NFC East lost this weekend, and every team in the NFC West won.> This feat was accomplished with only one meeting between the divisions--more evidence, as if it were needed, how bad the NFC East is this year. |
|
| Dec-18-13 | | hangingenprise: phony: is schwartz and company on the "warm seat"? the lions have not progressed beyond the 500 mark the last two years and they should be atop the division. |
|
Dec-18-13
 | | Phony Benoni: General consensus locally is that if the Lions don't make the playoffs, he's gone. He has brought the team back to respoectablity, but doesn't seem capabla of making them into the consistent winner that their talent would indicate. Ikeep hearing rumors that Tom Coughlin is on the hot seat with the Giants as well. He might be the right guy here. |
|
| Dec-18-13 | | Shams: I think Schwartz might still get canned if they lose at home in the Wild Card round. But yeah, at the very least the Lions have to make the playoffs to save his job. As John Clayton has pointed out-- if you can't win the division with all these weapons, in a year when the Bears and Packers have seen their starting passers get injured, you deserve to go to the coaching guillotine. |
|
| Dec-18-13 | | Jim Bartle: The greatest motivational speech ever would be, "You better win, or Tom Coughlin will be your next coach." |
|
Dec-18-13
 | | Phony Benoni: The Lions have had a problem with undisciplined and immature play for some time. Schwartz has not shown that he can solve it. Simple enough. |
|
| Dec-18-13 | | Jim Bartle: The offense seems to play well some games. So does the defense. But rarely in the same game. |
|
Dec-18-13
 | | Phony Benoni: So I see there's a baseball clue. I learned long ago not to try and solve these things. For instance, here's what comes to mind. The guy lon the left is Jackie Robinson, initials J.R. The guy on the right looks like Roy "Campy" Campenella. I'm not sure about the guy in the middle, but if it's Ralph Branca you would have: <J. R. Campy Branca> And now you know why I don't even bother trying to solve these clues. |
