 | | Phony Benoni: Tigers stick their toe in the free agent market, signing Rajal Davis from Toronto for a paltry $10 milion over two years. He has speed, which I think will make Miguel Cabrera unhappy. After all, if Davis can ground the ball off the pitcher's leg for a "home run", what's there left for Cabrera to do? http://www.freep.com/article/201312... (Video at bottom of page after a lot of folderol.) |

 | | WannaBe: Inside the infield home run, like to see that one. =)) |
| Dec-10-13 | | Jim Bartle: Amazing that average or less-than-average players can earn millions these days. Both the Giants and the A's gave up on him years ago, but maybe he's improved. Davis obviously is fast and can steal bases, but with his .315 on-base percentage, how many chances will he get? |

Dec-10-13
 | | perfidious: Roy Halladay called it a career yesterday, signing a one-day contract to retire as a Toronto Blue Jay. A class act and terrific pitcher for a decade. |
| Dec-11-13 | | Marcgerm: Thank you for always making me laugh! :D |
| Dec-11-13 | | Jim Bartle: Rules committee has passed a change prohibiting home plate collisions (runner must slide) and catchers from blocking the plate. I'm not sure what the penalty for doing either will be. |
Dec-11-13
 | | WannaBe: Well, from what I read on ESPN, that will come in after the 2014 season. And a lot of details are to be figured out. It's not a done thing, yet. |
| Dec-11-13 | | Jim Bartle: The players association has to approve it.
Apparently home will be treated the same as the other bases, so I should check the rules on those. |
Dec-12-13
 | | OhioChessFan: Long overdue. I have never understood how a catcher <without the ball> can keep a runner from advancing to home plate. |
| Dec-12-13 | | Travis Bickle: You gotta block the plate! That's baseball!!
http://youtu.be/4Fj2B9z4Dbw |
| Dec-12-13 | | Travis Bickle: There's no crying in baseball!! ; P
http://youtu.be/Xx8cCDthsuk |
| Dec-12-13 | | Jim Bartle: Ray Chapman didn't cry. Tony Conigliaro didn't cry. |
Dec-12-13
 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> Ray Fosse would be a better example. Here's a link. Apparently it is currently "illegal" now for the catcher to block the plate <without the ball>, but the rule is never enforced. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on... It's hard to imagine the players not going along with this unless testosterone takes over. |
| Dec-12-13 | | Jim Bartle: I picked players who were severely injured or killed, worse than Fosse. Bill James wrote about the rule years ago, saying the no-blocking rule was still there but had been enforced less and less over the years. |
| Dec-12-13 | | nickpelling: Hey Phony Benoni,
Was it you (or a different Moody) who won a 9-mover Van Geet Attack against S. Bender in an APCT postal game from 1977, 1978, or 1985 (I've seen all three listed)? Thanks very much!, ....Nick P.... |

Dec-12-13
 | | Phony Benoni: <nickpelling> It was me. I think the year was more likely 1977, but I don't recall for sure. But I don't forget games like this:
1.Nc3 d5 2.e4 d4 3.Nce2 e5 4.Ng3 c5 5.Nf3 f6 6.Bc4 Bg4 7.Nxe5 Bxd1 8.Bf7+ Ke7 9.Nf5# 1-0 click for larger viewThe old right-handed Legal's Mate. (Black's third and fourth moves may be reversed.) By the way, Black's full name was <Sam Bender>. |
| Dec-13-13 | | playground player: <Esteemed Colleagues and Baseball Mavens> Here's one that popped into my head today: Who is the only player to hit 50 or more home runs in two seasons... ten or more years apart? No peeking--either you know it, or give it your best guess. |
Dec-13-13
 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> I thought of him, but thought the later decade was his first time. |
| Dec-13-13 | | Jim Bartle: 10 years apart, and no season in between? |
| Dec-13-13 | | Jim Bartle: Anyway, any Giants fan knows that one. |
Dec-13-13
 | | WannaBe: Barry Zito? |
Dec-13-13
 | | Phony Benoni: Ron Herbel? |
| Dec-13-13 | | Jim Bartle: It's 50 hit, not 50 given up.
But speaking of Giants pitchers and homers, for anyone who doesn't know this story: When Gaylord Perry was a rookie, during spring training a coach watched him hit and said, "There'll be a man on the moon before this guy hits a home run." Perry hit his first home run on July 20, 1969 against the Dodgers, half an hour after Armstrong stepped onto the moon. |
Dec-14-13
 | | perfidious: <Jim>: Never heard that story-hilarious! |
| Dec-15-13 | | playground player: <Jim Bartle> Yes, my last question was a bit too easy for you. Willie Mays was the only one to hit 50 home runs, ten seasons apart. So try this one (and no peeking at the record book): Only one pitcher has ever given up 50 homers in one season. Who wuzzee? No, it was not Ron Herbel, Frank Reberger, or Don Carrithers. |
