Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

OhioChessFan: The Tom Brady rule is again in effect. If he's on the losing end, call a phantom penalty on the defense.
Dec-08-13  Jim Bartle: I agree! At least today. No interference on that pass, not even close.
Dec-08-13  Shams: Yeah, but Gronk is done for the year so quite a pyrrhic victory for the Patriots. Without that guy they aren't going anywhere in January.
Dec-08-13  hangingenprise: ocf: there are two teams i dislike and the browns just got robbed by one of them!

phony: yes there is someone worse in give aways but i dont know who it is. your pal travis bears must win against the cowgirls!

Dec-08-13  Travis Bickle: I'd love to see The Bears punch the cowboys in the mouth tomorrow night!
Dec-08-13  Travis Bickle: Phony owes us a trade because we Bears knocked out the packers QB Jolly Rodgers making life easy for Detroit. I think we'll give Phony Mr Excitement Devin Hester for Ndamukong Suh! Da Bears GM Phil Emery is waiting by the phone Phony... ; P

  WannaBe: FSU and Auburn!!

So, what's the early line? Pick?

Dec-08-13  Shams: FSU -7.5 on 5dimes.

Phony Benoni: Travis, the Bears get nothing from the Lions who have lost three of five since Rodgers went down. They're just too nice of guys to take advantage, and Suh is their ringleader. The Bears don't want a big softie like him.
Dec-09-13  Travis Bickle: Phony I was just joking with you as I didn't even watch football yesterday & hadn't even noticed that your Lions lost to Philadelphia. Devin Hester has clearly lost a step and has nowhere near the explosion he once had.

Phony Benoni: Travis, it's apparent Hester is no longer the player he used to be. Still plenty dangerous, though. But since you didn't watch the Lions yesterday, you don't know that their new return guy, Jeremy Ross, returned both a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns.

I wouldn't be shocked if the Lions lose out. They get Baltimore and the Giants at home, two mentally tough teams of the type that normally beat the Lions. Then they travel to Minnesota. The Vikikings will probably be without Adrian Peterson or a quarterback, so the Lions have a chance to keep it close.

Phony Benoni: Turns out the Lions knocked the Frankford Yellow Jackets out of the NFL record book:

The second item is amazing.

perfidious: While perusing other items, came across this 2008 piece on NFL draft busts: (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft...)

While the article is unremarkable per se, containing all the usual suspects at the top, with the advantage of nearly six years behind us, the comments under Charles Rogers' section make for amusing reading:

<....Rogers put up monster numbers at Michigan State and was supposed to solve Detroit's issues at wide receiver. Instead, he became the first of four wide receivers chosen by the Lions in the first round of the draft, with only WR Roy Williams living up to his potential so far. The jury is still out on Calvin Johnson.>

We all know what happened to Williams' career after Lions traded him to Dallas for a boatload of draft choices.

One rather thinks the jury has returned from deliberations on Johnson's talents by now, though, most probably with a verdict that he can play a little.

Dec-09-13  Deus Ex Alekhina: Well, the Lions can win the division with an 8-8 record, unlikely, but it has happened before. I remember the Lions years ago with an 8-7 record going into the last game against a 7-8 Tampa Bay team who were then in the same division as the Lions. Tampa won the game & the division with an 8-8 record. But actually the Pack might sneak in to win the division with an 8-7-1 record. BTW, years ago, BC (Before Cable), we listened to college football on the radio, since teams were limited to 2 TV appearances per year, unless they went to a bowl game. Michigan radio loved to play a song parody of the Ohio State fight song called "Liquidate Ohio State". Good stuff.

Phony Benoni: Travis, I thought if Butkus smiled his face would break.

By the way, is Cutler going to be able to get his job back?

Dec-10-13  Travis Bickle: Phony, yeah Dick doesn't smile very often, lol! As to your question, that's what Trestman is saying, that Cutler is still the starting QB when he's cleared to play. But Cutler is in a big contract year so it's anybody's guess what they're going to do after the season, especially since the word is out they're going to spend a lot of money on defense next year.
