Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

perfidious: <PB>: It was a surprise to see how many scoreless ties were played in the old days.

Phony Benoni: <perfidious> Speaking of scoreless ties, would you believe there was once an NFL Champion which was shut out in their first four games?

Point is they only lost one of the four.

Dec-26-13  hangingenprise: phony: yes, i know that you were teasing travis and i was just following up on that. travis is a good guy and we all know what his team is.

anyway, the lions will but it all together vs the vikings offensively, defensively, and special teams and it will be ugly for the vikings. i have a feeling that stafford to megatron will have a big day.

Phony Benoni: <hangingenprise> Don't bet on it. Johnson may not even play with that nagging knee injury. He's been but a shadow of himself the last couple of games due to it.

The Lions ended last seaso with eight losses in a row, and I see no reason why theu won't have another late fadeout this year. Right now they're looking worse than a jacked-up haircut. They continue to dominate at times, but keep committing the big mistake at the crucial moment.

WannaBe: Do not fret, my dear <Phony>, this guy will bring you the Championship next year.

After he sets the record for most yards (30,000) and most receptions (1600) and most touchdowns (700)

Dec-26-13  hangingenprise: phony: see the lions are already getting ready for
next year. at least they are making solid draft picks.
Dec-27-13  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony I got Deep Fritz 14 for a Christmas gift! The only problem is I can't figure out how to put the program in setup mode like for solving the daily puzzle or to play the ending of a game I don't understand without playing from move 1 from both sides! : 0

I had the Fritz 11 program which was quite easy to setup but this Deep Fritz 14 I'm afraid I'll need to talk to some 1 from NASA... ; P

Seems like they designed this software more for a GM instead of a hack like me lol!

Dec-27-13  Travis Bickle: Oh 1 other thing Mr Benoni, I'm in a dilemma... I hate The Green Bay Cheesers worse than a coyote trying to eat my dog!! I have to root for My Bears & if Jolly Rodgers plays maybe we can break his other shoulder! ; P

On the other hand if we lose the game we can maybe get a better draft pick, preferably a 450 pound DT! ; P

  perfidious: RIP Paul Blair.

Strongest memory I have of Blair is Labour Day '74, when Orioles swept Red Sox in a critical doubleheader. Nice catch late to save the first game, 1-0:

In the second game, Blair homered for the only run:

One of the finest defensive CFs I remember.

Phony Benoni: Hey, <Travis>, I've always had strong feelings about playing for draft picks. If you deliberately lose games now, you'll keep on losing with the draft pick. We Lions fans know all about team cultures.

To my mind, you play like the Giants did last week against the Lions. When asked if he might sit Eli Manning in a "meaningless" game, Coach Coughlin said, "Of course not. When we play a game, we play to win."

That's the sort of attitude that wins championships instead of floundering in mediocrity.

Dec-27-13  Jim Bartle: <On the other hand if we lose the game we can maybe get a better draft pick, preferably a 450 pound DT!>

Last time the Bears tried that, ca. 1984, it didn't work out that well.

Dec-27-13  Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle: <On the other hand if we lose the game we can maybe get a better draft pick, preferably a 450 pound DT!> Last time the Bears tried that, ca. 1984, it didn't work out that well.> I don't know Jim, if you're talking about William The Fridge Perry being selected in '84, that worked out quite well! The next year The Bears won the Superbowl against The Patriots 45-10! ; P

P.S. The travesty of that early success was that a young motivated William Perry who received great conditioning, (as part of his training Perry did repetitional standing jumps on a 3 foot platform, was quick as a cat & for a big man was a svelte 300 pounds! Unfortunately the national hype of William 'The Fridge' Perry & dozens of endorsement deals led to his quick demise.

Dec-27-13  Jim Bartle: I don't think the Fridge was ever a good player. Remember Buddy Ryan called him a wasted draft pick.

Better than looking for size, look for a destructive force like Hampton or Dent, not that they're just hanging around in every locker room. I remember 49er guard said he held Hampton on every play and still couldn't stop him. (And Hampton never complained, just kept beating up Cross.)

As far as the Bears defense in 85 goes, they had two greats and one near-great on the line, three great linebackers, and brillant safeties. It wasn't Perry who made it go.

Jim, I know you think you know everything but please don't tell me about Da Bears! They had an awesome defensive line led by Dan Hampton Richard Dent, Steve McMichael & William Perry who had 5 sacks his rookie year! They also had the top 3 linebackers in Wilbur Marshall, Mike Singletary & Otis Wilson! Also very good safeties in Gary Fencik & Dave Duerson.

That's exactly what I said, without naming everyone!! I just think Perry wasn't near the level of Hampton, Dent, and McMichael.

Since the 80s I've thought Singletary was the best middle linebacker ever.

OhioChessFan: I think Perry fit pretty well into the system, for a while. But when the system was studied out in the off season, and Fridge gained a few poounds, he wasn't as effective.
Dec-27-13  Jim Bartle: What was the 46 system anyway? Put such overwhelming pressure on the qb and the line of scrimmage thst there's no time to look downfield?

Phony Benoni: <JB> Wikipedia knows all. Or, at least, has an article about it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/46_def...

Essentially, it is "eight-in-the-box" with bump-and-run coverage by the cornerbacks and some unusual formations. It was meant to stop the run, then overwhelm the passer with blitzes. It was effective in the 80s when most teams used a two-back, two-wide receiver offenses, but the West Coast Offense and spread formations countered it effectively.
