| Jan-02-14 | | Jim Bartle: <It's funny the author didn't say anything about the 1986 season, when suddenly more teams hit 200+ homers than in all of previous baseball history> Wasn't that 1987, when Boggs hit 24 homers? |

 | | Phony Benoni: Looks like <JB? has this one. Here's 1986, when not a single team hit 200 home runs: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...
And 1987, with five:
http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...
However, after 1987 the MLB home run totals receded. Here's a chart between the strike years of 1981 and 1994: 1982 3379
1983 3301 -.2.31%
1984 3258 -1.30%
1985 3602 +10.56%
1986 3813 +5.86%
1987 4458 +16.92%
1988 3180 -28.67%
1989 3083 -3.05%
1990 3317 +7.59%
1991 3383 +1.99%
1992 3038 -10.20%
1993 4030 +32.65%
This is interesting because the usual account is that the Steroid Age began after the 1994/95 strike, but there were certainly signs of it in 1993. While there was a two-team expansion in 1993, that could hardly account for an extra thousand home runs (even if one team was Colorado(. There may have also been some reaction to the abnormally low totals in 1992. |
|
| Jan-02-14 | | playground player: <JB> , <PB> I stand corrected; yes, it was 1987, the year Boggs hit 24 homers. Heck, even Luis Aguayo was parking a few, that year. |

| Jan-02-14 | | Travis Bickle: <WannaBe: J. Cutler gets 7 year (!?!?!) extension with Chicago.> Now it's time to build up our Defense again... and then Superbowl baby!!! ; P |

 | | Phony Benoni: Hey, <Travis>, there are some people here in Detroit suggesting we should Hire Lovie Smith. As A Bears fan, I'm sure you hope that comes true! |
|
| Jan-02-14 | | Jim Bartle: Sorry, Travis but <Super Bowl winning Quarterback> and <Jay Cutler> are two terms which just don't seem to go together. But either did <Joe Flacco>, so what do I know? |
|
| Jan-02-14 | | Travis Bickle: Phony, It's pretty much a done deal Lovie Dovie is going to Tampa Bay but I'd love to see him be Detroit's skipper & get involved with their offense. ; P |
|
| Jan-02-14 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> I know what you mean, but I'd rather The Bears have a strong armed, experienced & semi mobile QB than drafting an unproven guy out of college that takes 2-3 years to school the guy. Trestman is the quaterback whisperer & Steve Young respects him. The key is if the Bears can keep Cade McCown. |

As A Bears fan, I'm sure you hope that comes true!> It's funny, I saw one of those teaser headlines "Lovie Smith to coach talented roster" or similar, meant to get you to click on the link. I assumed he'd been hired to coach the Lions. I guess the more sophisticated view is that the Lions don't have a talented roster so much as they have a few talented guys who are eating up vast amounts of cap space. As a Dolphins fan I can't really feel as sorry for anyone as I feel sorry for myself. Though I note the Bears also won their first three, went through a rocky phase, seemingly had a playoff spot wrapped up with two weeks to go, and then... But even Bears fans didn't have to suffer through a terrible uniform redesign and a bizarre bullying scandal. |

| Jan-02-14 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, you know what's so depressing in Chicago when the football season ends is the baseball season approaches. : 0 |

 | | WannaBe: 8 minutes left in the OU-Ala game, safe for me to declare game over? Can I lave the game and go read 'Lawrence in Arabia' by Scott Anderson? (This book have me hooked, I am only on page 50, and boy, it rivals any Clancy, Ludlum, or Le Carre novel.) |
|
| Jan-03-14 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, you must be real busy in the bowels of the library working way into the night on the complete game compilation of Genghis Kahn or some other colossal project like the complete chess history of Alfred The Great! Otherwise you would have watched all 20 minutes worth of The Chicago Blackhawks Playoff & Stanley Cup goals of last season I linked on your Forum! ; P |

 | | Phony Benoni: Hey, Travis, I'm not even at work this week. But we've got this snow. I know you Tough Guys in Chicago use it to line your parkas for protection from the Real Cold, but we Wimpy Detroiters have to spend a couple of minutes shovelling every ten inches. (We could do it quicker, but some time has to be spent compalining about whoever lost yesterday.) |

 | | Phony Benoni: I don't see much interest inthe NFL games this weekend. Three of the four feature warm-weather teams at cold-weather sites (NO @ Philly, SD @ Cincy. SF @ Green Bay). I can see Philly outscoring NO outside, and Cincy out-toughing SD. SF is favored over GB, but if you want an upset this weekend that's probably the one to watch. Otherwise, it's KC in the dome at Indy. KC has been doing it with mirrors lately, and Indy has shown they can play with anybody. I'm going All Home Winners. |
|
| Jan-03-14 | | hangingenprise: game that will be over by half time cincy
high score eagles
packers edge the 49ers home cold field
upset yeaaa we get to play in a dome chiefs |
|
| Jan-03-14 | | Travis Bickle: Interestingly San Fran's QB Colin Kaepernick comes from Milwaukee & GB's QB comes from California! LOL!! Plus at that expected frigid brutal temperature
it's all psychological. The toughest will perform & prevail! http://www.latimes.com/sports/footb... |
|
| Jan-03-14 | | Jim Bartle: Kaepernick was born in Milwaukee but both he and Aaron Rodgers grew up in small cities in California's Central Valley. |
