Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Jan-14-14  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony has The Detroit News reported on this?

Phony Benoni: Yes, Travis, that's all the buzz up here. Not a great deal of enthusiasm after being stiffed by Whisenhut, but at least Caldwell has a bit of a positive track record. The alternate is Mike Munchak, the guy who got fired in Tennessee. That does not sound promising, and the irony of accepting the coach who was replace by Whisenhunt would be overwhelming.

Which is probably why the Lions will hire him.

WannaBe: <OhioChessFan> Here are some recent 'Transactions' made by them Cubs:

Agreed to terms with RHP Jose Veras on a one-contract.

Claimed RHP Brett Marshall off waivers from the New York Yankees.

Agreed to terms with LHPs Jonathan Sanchez, Tsuyoshi Wada and Tommy Hottovy and OF Mitch Maier on minor league contracts.

Agreed to terms with LHP Wesley Wright on a one-year contract.

Claimed RHP Liam Hendriks off waivers from Minnesota (AL).

Acquired OF Justin Ruggiano from Miami for OF Brian Bogusevic.

Acquired C George Kottaras from Kansas City for a cash consideration.

World Series 2014, here they come!!

Jan-14-14  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: And, by the way, Travis, I see the Cubs have finally discovered the secret to success! http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles>...

When I seen that on the sports Phony I almost threw up! If it's 1 thing I can't stand it those damn stupid mascots!! The only 1 that was ever any good was the San Diego Chicken. The Phillie Fanatic has to be the worst ever!

When The Cubs hired Theo Epstein I thought finally the Cubs are serious about winning a World Series... But all this tight fisted owner of The Cubs Tom Ricketts wants to use Theo for, who won 2 WS in Boston, is to waste his baseball skills building a hotel and renovating the ballpark.

P.S. What makes me really sick is billionaire Mark Cuban wanted to buy The Cubs! But the approval committee whoever they are embraced Ricketts with open arms.

Jan-14-14  Travis Bickle: I gave up on The Cubs when they lost The 2003 NLCS to the stinkin' Marlins. But when they hired Theo Epstein from Boston who orchestrated 2 World Series in a decade with the BoSox, another baseball WS drought team I thought, I'll give him a shot to build a winner. But after just a few seasons of miserable rotten teams I stopped watching The Cubs. Now with this B.S. mascot I am definitely finished as a Cubs fan!
Jan-14-14  Jim Bartle: Seems like the Cubs used to at least tease the fans with the vision of a good team, and they had winning seasons. But now it seems there's no chance from Opening Day on. I can't even name a player on the team today.

Phony Benoni: Well, it's officia: Former Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell takes over the Lions. Nobody--at least among the fans and media--is happy around here. Not that Caldwell is so bad, but that the Lions couldn't sign their first choice, Ken Whisenhunt.

The sentiment is much like Travis' evaluation of the Cubs: the team won't be a winner until they get new ownership, the kind that would make sure coaches wouldn't turn down the job.

So Caldwell starts with a strike against him, though not of his own making.

Phony Benoni: Reports are that the Titans offered Whisenhunt an extra million per year, plus control of player personnal. No wonder.
Jan-15-14  hangingenprise: no way the lions would turn personel decision to whinsenhunt. remember the matt kill your franchise millen era. seems caldwell has meet with stafford and had a number of plays broken down in sections and they have a good working relationship. time will tell.
Jan-15-14  hangingenprise: meanwhile in raider land the media joke going is that they won't get introduced to new faces as the coaching staff will be the same? critical qb draft for reggie and co.
Jan-15-14  hangingenprise: hey phony look at it this way. if your whinnyhunt
who would you rather face: travis bears or the jags twice a year and than the pack.
Jan-15-14  hangingenprise: the time is now
got to admit phony the intro speech by caldwell is the best yet. put me in coach i can rip one off against that bear defense.

Jan-16-14  Jim Bartle: If he'd been hit with the helmet during a celebration afterward, when you'd think there's no reason to be on your guard, the guy might have a case.

But the kid threw his helmet while about to touch home. The man must have been a fair distance away, and should have been paying attention.

What would happen in the majors if fans could sue for being hit by a ball? (You have to be on your toes if you're sitting behind a dugout, the ball can get there really quickly.) They'd have to put up screens halfway up the foul lines, and how much fun would that be?

WannaBe: I don't understand "Passing a Runner" and "Record Keeping"

http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/p...

Jan-16-14
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: Passing a runner is simply going ahed of the guy who is on the bases in front of you. Let's say Usain Bolt hits a triple and Andre the Giant knocks one over the fence. Hustling all the way, Andre passes Bolt on the base paths before the latter can score. Andre should be called out. If the umps don't notice (or simply don't want to tell Andre that he's out), the opposing manager can challenge.

Record keeping can happen if the umpire makes a mistake about the count, such as awarding a walk on ball three. Higher mathematics is difficult.

WannaBe: I know Passing the runner, but does that need to be (a reviewable call?)

Thanks for explaining Record Keeping, did not think of/about that, I know Umps have lost track of B/K last season.

Phony Benoni: I can see umpires missing a runner passing another; it can be close. And since such a play instantly renderes the ball dead, there wouldn't be a problem with what may have happened afterward.
Jan-17-14
Premium Chessgames Member
OhioChessFan: Going out on a limb without reading the rule, but my memory of the rule and common sense tell me there is no reason for the ball to be immediately dead if a runner passes another.

Phony Benoni: <OCF> You're right. Bad assumption on my part.
Jan-18-14  Deus Ex Alekhina: It makes no diff whether the Lions have Whisenhunt or Caldwell or the ghost of Lombardy as head coach; that position is always going to be the graveyard of reputations. The Lions have losing in their blood.
