Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Only hope this is not so: Verlander is one terrific pitcher and a class act.

Phony Benoni: <perfidious> Reports in these parts have been more optimisitc, but that may be wishful thinking with a core injury. Worse yet, Verlander is traditionally a slow starter.

There are a lot of indicatons that this is not going to be a good year for the Tigers.

Phony Benoni: <perfidious> I remain pessimistic simply because there are so many unanwered questions. Hole in the starting rotation (the team's main strength), bullpen losing two reliable relievers, Prince Fielder being replaced by an unproven rookie, other question marks not adequately addressed, rookie manager. There's just so many things that can go wrong.

Hopefully, this is just the Polar Vortex talking.

Phony Benoni: <Travis> I am tempted to purchase a firearm, stand over the nearest groundhog burrow on February 2nd, and inform the little critter that it doesn't see its shadow after all.

Though we'll be in the middle of a heat wave by then. Four straight days above 20!

By the way, with Groundhog Day doubling as Super Bowl Sunday, I wonder what the Vegas line is on the meaning of the groundhog's prediciton. Denver probably has more sunshine than Seattle, so seeing the shadow should probably favor them.

Jan-28-14
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: There have been only eight Super Bowls played after the groundhog's appearance, and there doesn't seem to be a clear trend.

Shadow: NFC 3, AFC 2
No Shadow: AFC 2, NFC 1

Too small a sample size to draw legitimate conclusions. Also, the individual factors are contradictory. Seattle's loss was on a Shadow day, so they should favor No Shadow. Peyton Manning's two appearance were a win on a No Shadow and a loss on a Shadow, so he would seem to favor No Shadow as well.

You'd expect Phil to give his best for a Steelers' game. They've won on a Shadwo and lost on a No Shadow, so that would seem to mean the AFC favors No Shadow.

Here's the data. See if you can make any sense of it.

2005 Patriots 24, Eagles 21 AFC Shadow

2006 Steelers 21, Seahaws 10 AFC Shadow

2007 Colts 29, Bears 17 AFC No Shadow

2008 Giants 17, Patriors 14 NFC Shadow

2009 (played February 1) Shadow

2010 Saints 31, Colts 17 NFC Shadow

2011 Packers 31, Steelers 25 NFC No Shadow

2012 Giants 21, Patriots 17 NFC Shadow

2013 Ravens 34, 49ers 31 AFC No Shadow

  WannaBe: From G. Easterbrook:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/1...

<In fashion news, the Broncos are the home team of record for the Super Bowl. The only significance is the home team of record chooses whether to wear colors or whites. Denver chose to wear orange. Denver has worn orange jerseys in the Super Bowl three times, and lost all three. The Broncos won the Super Bowl the time they wore blue, and are 1-1 in their whites. Surely Broncos execs choosing jerseys for New Jersey thought, "Superstition is ridiculous." Woe unto disbelievers!

Want to impress your friends while watching the game? If either the Broncos or Seahawks score on a pick-six, immediately announce they will win. Teams returning an interception for a touchdown are 11-0 in the Super Bowl. And see below for TMQ's Super Bowl pick.>

And this:

<Stats to Ponder No. 5: If the Broncos prevail, they will be the second team to lead the NFL in passing yards and also win that season's Super Bowl. So far only the 1999 Rams finished first in passing and also won the Super Bowl. If the Seahawks prevail, their 26th rank in the NFL in passing yards will be the lowest ever for a Super Bowl champion. So far the 2005 Steelers, at 24th, are the worst team for passing yards to win the Super Bowl. Stat from reader Jeff Caveney of New York.>

If memory serves, the Rams almost lost that one, if not for a last minute Championship saving tackle... Defence will prevail?!!?

Jan-28-14  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, The 1967 "Ice Bowl" in Wisconsin Dec. 31st, what fond memories! The Temperature was -13 degrees below zero with a wind chill of -48 below zero! I hope Sunday's game is just like this 1 was! ; P
