Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Jan-21-14  Shams: <OCF> <If both teams play in the Super Bowl the way they did today, Denver by 21.>

I am admittedly biased, but you play as well as your opponents allow you to play. No way Denver looks that good if they play San Francisco yesterday. The Patriots simply didn't have the horses this year; after Wilfork and Mayo were out for the year that defense was a sitting duck.

Anyone know a God of Bad Weather I can pray to?

Jan-21-14  Shams: All hail Boreas the wise and just and merciful! And what a lovely family you have, Boreas!

<Boreas [is] the God of the North cold wind! (Still in Greece the North wind is called Boreas!). Boreas was very strong, with a violent temper to match. He was frequently depicted as a winged old man with shaggy hair and beard, holding a conch shell and wearing a billowing cloak.

Pausanias wrote that Boreas had snakes instead of feet, though in art he was usually depicted with winged human feet.

Another Goddess was the daughter of Boreas, the Chione. Her name literally means snow. She was the goddess of snow but controlled it only with her father’s permission!>

WannaBe: Some (useless) information, from Tuesday Morning Quarterback by G. Easterbrook http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/1...

Since the merger, 4 times have the best defence (Seattle, in this case) faced the best offence (Denver) with defence winning 3-1. (Giants 1991, 49ers '85 and Steelers '79)

Denver have punted once, <ONCE>, in their 2 play-off games.

In 33 times that 49ers had the ball (in games vs. Seattle), they scored 3 TDs.

More info, (read the full article =))

Jan-21-14  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, here's the lowdown on The Vegas line for The Superbowl. Seattle Sunday night was the favorite for all of 30 minutes! Then heavy action made Denver the favorite. The line is Denver -2.5 & the under over is 48.

WannaBe: I am not too sure about this, when St.L played New England, with the greatest show on turf, they were shut/shot down.

When New England played the Giants, they too, were shot/shut down.

Jan-22-14  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, there is a few intangibles to this years Superbowl. #1 Manning's not a great cold weather QB.

http://www.cbssports.com/general/wr...

My 2nd intangible is the inexperience of QB Russell Wilson in a gigantically hyped & pressure game like The Superbowl.

Phony Benoni: The problem with putting too much reliance on Peyton Manning's cold weather record is that many of those games were played when he was a Dome quarterback in Indianapolis. I'd be more interested in his cold weather record while at Denver. And is Russell Wilson a cold weather quarterback?

I 'm counting on the weather to keep the score down, but it still looks like a Denver game. (The Northeast is getting another Polar Vortex this week, and Pete Rozelle Knows What next week.)

Phony Benoni: So Maddux will have instead a three-inch replica of home plate surrounded by a foot of black?
Jan-23-14  Jim Bartle: What happened when Maddux pitched to Boggs? Every Maddux pitch was a strike, but anything Boggs didn't swing at was a ball.
Jan-23-14  Jim Bartle: Just learned a new rule: if a batted ball in play gets stuck, the fielder must throw his arms up for play to stop. If he tries to get it (stuck under padding, or in a gate) the ball remains in play.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OWjzrK...

Is there a special rule for Wrigley Field?

Jan-23-14

WannaBe: I think it's the same, throw up your arms.
Jan-23-14  Jim Bartle: Yes, but if you try to dig the ball out of the ivy, does that mean the ball stays in play?

  WannaBe: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground...

Go to individual park and Wrigley.

Jan-23-14  Jim Bartle: All right, that clears it up.

Weren't the Cubs trying to charge the owners of the buildings beyond the outfield? If they want money so much, why don't they sell ivy from the walls each offseason. It grows quickly, and people could have gardens covered with Wrigley ivy. You could get a goat thrown in a few dollars more.
