Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Apr-01-14  Shams: Freak accident tonight-- Vlad Guerrero signed a one-day deal to retire as an Angel, and he threw out the first pitch to hitting coach and former MLBer Don Baylor. Somehow, don't ask me how, Baylor managed to break his femur catching it. Would be funny if it weren't serious; Baylor has had bone marrow cancer in the past. Very strange.

perfidious: Was about to make a tasteless joke on Baylor's fielding as a player, but will desist--nothing at all amusing about cancer.
Apr-01-14  Jim Bartle: This has to be one of the worst performances by a winning pitcher in years:

Cliff Lee, 5 innings, 8 runs.

He'll probably lose a 1-0 complete game next time out.

perfidious: <Jim> Lee probably will have a shot at that dubious distinction, as Phillies' offence is but a shadow of the one that won consecutive pennants and a World Series.
Apr-01-14  Jim Bartle: <1.10(c) The bat handle, for not more than 18 inches from its end, may be covered or treated with any material or substance to improve the grip. Any such material or substance, which extends past the 18 inch limitation, shall cause the bat to be removed from the game. NOTE: If the umpire discovers that the bat does not conform to (c) above until a time during or after which the bat has been used in play, it shall not be grounds for declaring the batter out, or ejected from the game.>

Was the "note" added after the Brett game, or was part of the rules at the time?

Phony Benoni: No doubt about it. I need new glasses.

I flipped over to catch the status of the Tigers' came, and saw this:

<Max Scherzer (0.00) pitches to Alex Gordon>

And my thought was "Wait! He couldn't have thrown 10,000 pitches to one hitter. That must be a career total. Boy, they keep track of everything!"

Then I read it correctly.

Apr-02-14  Deus Ex Alekhina: Detroit sports writer Ron Parker picked Kansas City to win the division, Tigers getting the wild card, and KC losing to LA Dodgers in the World Series, so it is nice to see them (KC) in last place after 2 games. On another note, while I am not really up on the auto scene here in the D, it seems that Mary Barra was tapped as the new head of GM on Jan 14 simply to present a more human face to congress for GM's ignition re-call fiasco. Plus the fact that she was out of the loop, blame-ability-wise.

Apr-03-14  Jim Bartle: So far I don't like the replays, especially with the time they're taking.

One of the good things about baseball has always been that what happens is determined right then, not afterward (no flag, no whistle, etc.)

Also, what happens if there's a controversial call during the middle of the play, say a runner called out at first, then another play at another base? How are they going to sort that out?

I do see that the "neighborhood play" at second on the double play cannot be reviewed, but still, that comes into question if a force play is challenged.

And what about this famous play, which we've already discussed?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvW...

Dropped intentionally by Russell? (Yes) Jackson blocked the ball intentionally? (yes)

But the big problem is the long time they're taking to decide. There needs to be a decision made quickly.

Apr-03-14  SugarDom: Big-time sports has always been slow incorporating advances in technology into the game.

Cameras installed at strategic location can help the officials make the right calls and it does not have to take much time to come upon a decision.
