Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

He really did look out at second, but I'd like to hear the Baltimore announcers describe the play.

Apr-05-14  Jim Bartle: Not a good idea to throw an intentional walk pitch right over the plate.

I once saw Pete Rose get a single while being walked. But he reached way outside to hit the ball. It was early in the season and Rose wasn't hitting, so he asked catcher Tom Haller, "You're walking a .220 hitter?"

Apr-05-14  Jim Bartle: Wichita State looks a lot better now. Lost to Kentucky by two points in the second round, looked like they were overrated, had just coasted through an easy schedule.

Now it looks as if they just had a bad draw, could have made the final game if they hadn't played that #8 seed.

Apr-07-14  Jim Bartle: Now here's something I've never seen. A drive hits first base, pops up in the air right to the pitcher, who touches first for the out, perhaps unnecessarily.

Too bad there wasn't a runner on base. There would have been an argument, probably a review. Did the pitcher catch a ground ball or a line drive?

Say there was a runner on third. He might break for home when he sees the ball pop in the air. The umpire didn't call the out until the pitcher touched the bag, so could the runner on third have been doubled off?

Ground ball.

< The umpire didn't call the out until the pitcher touched the bag, so could the runner on third have been doubled off?>

No.

Apr-07-14  Jim Bartle: It was close, though.
Apr-07-14  Jim Bartle: OK, men on first and third, no outs, same hit off the base. Could be a nightmare for the umps.

Runner on first wouldn't know if the ball had bounced, but since the ump didn't call out, he runs for second. The pitcher throws to second and a rundown starts and the runner from third tries to score, etc.

Meanwhile if the umps decide it was still a fly ball, it's a double play, but the runner on first can say, I was following the call during the play, otherwise I'd have gotten back to first on time.

And then what about the runner on third? Can he be tripled off on appeal?

By the way, if a runner crosses home, does he still have the right to run back to third?

On a related note, if I promote a pawn, pick up a queen and place it on the square but don't release it, can I still change it to another piece?

Phony Benoni: I couldn't find exact guidance in the rule book on this one, but I'm thinking <OCF> is right and it's a ground ball. Consider the Baltimore Chop, where a ball bounced off the plate is a ground ball.

On the other hand, if a line drive bounces off a fielder's foot, is that a ground ball as well? I don't think so. Think of that Pete Rose catch of the fumbled pop-up?

There's an interesting subrule there. Let's say Usain Bolt and I are going for the same fly ball. (It's hit slightly closer to me.) The ball bounces off my head, of course, but Bolt grabs it before it touches the ground.

Batter is out, but the runners can tag up the moment I get conked, not when Bolt makes the catch.

Without the rule, an outfielder could deliberately juggle a catch while running toward the infield, preventing a runner from tagging up.
