Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

So far as I know, that is the case.

Apr-25-14  playground player: <Esteemed Baseball Mavens> Skimming through my <Encyclopedia of Baseball>, I uncovered this odd bit of trivia.

In a certain baseball season, a pair of brothers finished first and second for the National League batting title. Who were they, and when did they accomplish this unusual feat?

Apr-25-14  Joshka: Matty and Jesus Alou? Around the mid 60's. Also I believe there was a 3rd brother who played.

perfidious: <Phony Benoni: Travis, no one knows what the Lions will do, not even the Lions. One idea is that they should trade up and go for Clowney (whom I keep wanting to call "Rosemary's Baby").>

This may well be a possibility:

Makes sense in the long term, what with all that dough tied up in four players; tough to get under the cap, much less have anything like financial flexibility.

perfidious: <WannaBe> Dallas too, though they manage to get a spot of wiggle room vis-à-vis their cap by the annual rite of converting part of Romo's bloated contract.
Apr-25-14  playground player: <Joshka> Matty and Felipe Alou, 1966. Matty hit .342 for the Pirates, and Felipe hit .327 for the Braves. Note to <Jim Bartle> Another couple of really bad trades by the Giants.

The third brother, Jesus, had his best year in 1970, hitting .306 for the Astros.

Apr-25-14  Jim Bartle: Oh, don't remind me.

The Giants thought they were so well-stocked with outfielders in the 60s (they certainly were solid in center) and early 70s they virtually gave away the surplus: Felipe, Matty, George Foster, Leon Wagner, Garry Maddox.

And ended up stuck with mediocre Jesus in right.

So they had little punch in left or right in the mid-sixties when they lost those close races to the no-hit Dodgers.

Funny, they still came up with two good outfields later: Mays/Bonds/Henderson and Bonds/Maddox/Matthews.

Apr-25-14  Joshka: <playground player> Felipe, yes:-) During the 60's I had baseball cards coming out of my ears!! Recall in 4th or 5th grade I'd study them right in class. One teacher stuck my desk in the corner and said, "Okay since you are not interested in school work, you could study your baseball cards in the corner by yourself!" Guess now putting a childs desk in the corner in the back of the room would be considered "neglect" or "endangerment" or "child abuse"!LOL

Apr-25-14  Jim Bartle: Anybody listen to the daily Buster Olney podcast? Really good, intelligent without being too wonky (no long recitations of numbers and modern stats).

The only thing I don't like is the first thing he does, after a historical note on the date (yesterday, Koufax struck out 18 in 1962), is give updates on all the injuries/recoveries. Come on.

Phony Benoni: <perfidious> Trading Suh is a very real possibility, since he's worn out his welcome around here. As good as he's been, the general feeling is that he could have done better. Still too many stupid penalties and bonehead moves.

While it's true he's skipped these voluntary team activities in the past, doing so with a new coaching staff is rubbing people the wrong way.

By the way, how long would this guy last hustling pool in Chicago?

He'd be fine if he was playing for free unless he got on a bikers nerves, LOL!

Seriously he'd be in a curb getting his head kicked in, in about 5 minutes...> Although I do say his girlfriend would have a promising future! ; P

Apr-26-14  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: <perfidious> Trading Suh is a very real possibility, since he's worn out his welcome around here.>

You could have traded Suh to Da Bears for Devin Hester! Now ya missed yer chance as he's gonna be a Roadrunner in ATL. with that astroturf! ; P

Apr-26-14  Shams: I had thought Suh's comment made him virtually untradeable, but apparently it'd be feasible.

http://overthecap.com/cost-trading-...

Apr-26-14  Jim Bartle: Holy Bill James! Buster Olney show contradicted what I said before. Last night a guy was on with just an avalanche of really, really arcane stats last night.

He analyzed Pablo Sandoval on his batting average swinging at pitches outside the zone, and pitches in the zone. Too much information!! And it went downhill from there.

Apr-26-14  playground player: <Jim Bartle> Don't forget Willie Kirkland and Manny Mota. The Giants could have used them.

<Joshka> It wouldn't be neglect at all. It would just be "independent study."

I wouldn't be too surprised to hear you can get a degree in Baseball Card Studies, these days.

Apr-26-14  Jim Bartle: Kirkland wasn't that good, but Mota is another example of a valuable player they discarded casually, getting utility player Joey Amalfitano for the third time.
