Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

May-02-14  technical draw: Wrong Jim. I read it not you. (the part about the protests) Since this is not about the protests lets continue with the make-up of one of the great symphony orchestra.

There are a lot of reasons why there are so few black symphonic music. Just like there a few white hip-hop singers. Fewer blacks entering conservatory studies, and few black teachers in public schools talking about Beethoven and Mozart. It seems that now every issue that involves black and whites the racism word appears (along with Jesse Jackson).

May-02-14  Jim Bartle: Sorry, not interested, on this page. I just seriously question the Symphony caved to protests and gave a fellowship to a black bassoonist.
May-02-14  technical draw: OK, I guess the DSO is not the only one to cave.
May-02-14  Jim Bartle: <Not in Detroit, Somebody noticed that there were no blacks in the orchestra. So they yelled racists! and the Detroit symphony folded. They hired a black bassoon player without an audition.>

You really should back that up with some evidence.

May-02-14  technical draw: OK here it is. I was mistaken it wasn't a bassoonist but a bassist:http://books.google.com.pr/books?id...
May-02-14  Jim Bartle: Ok, thanks, you're right. From 1989. We haven't gone hell in the ensuing 25 years.

The complaining legislators were out to lunch. An orchestra should be made up of the best musicians, period. If they want a minority outreach program, great, but only the best actually play in the orchestra. (I believe most orchestra members are not from the same city anyway, right?)

A great line in your link, paraphrased: "The legislators seemed to want not a blind a udition but a deaf one."

Anyway, from an interview with that bassist in 1989. Note that while he did not audition, he was already playing with the orchestra as a sub.

<I think I read that you were hired without an audition; is that right?

Yes, that's right!

It's pretty unusual, isn't it?

Extremely unusual, and a very interesting confluence of events. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra was on tour in Europe at the time, and I had been subbing with the orchestra for probably about a year at that point, and they asked me to go on that tour, during which two Black State legislators who sat on a committee that appropriated State money to the DSO were willing to withold their votes unless the orchestra addressed hiring another Black player.

How many Black players did they have at that time, Rick?

Black members? There was one - Joe Strickland.

So that was pretty minimal compared to the population of Detroit and the area!

Yes, but people don't realize that you probably can't expect to have 22% of an orchestra being Black. I mean there's just not those numbers reflected in the schools of Music that I attended anyway!>

May-02-14  Jim Bartle: Here's the interview: http://africlassical.blogspot.com/2...
Saludos.
May-02-14  Jim Bartle: No problem! I do think that the best musicians need to be in an orchestra. No more a place for affirmative action than a baseball team.

WannaBe: <JB> I just have a quick question, do you think college or universities should have affirm. action as part of admission policy?

Just curious, I am not going to debate/argue this issue, just wish to know your opinion.

May-02-14  Jim Bartle: It certainly was necessary at one time. Not sure if it's necessary today.
May-03-14  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, I'm at the Blackhawks game @ the United Center... I just bought a brand new Blackhawks Smartphone. Let me know if you receive this message...

Phony Benoni: Knowing nothing about the Kentucky Derby except that it's being run today, I figured I could give an objective opinion and took a look at the field. Nothing inspiring. A couple of holidays, Tony Danza, and a bunch of nags that obviously aren't Feitlebaum.

However, I can safely predict a conversation that will take place after the race:

"Do you think this horse has a chance to win the Triple Crown, Chauncey?"

"I really do, Edgar. After all, Miguel Cabrera's off to a slow start."

C.C. is the first horse bred in California to win the Derby since 1962.

Phony Benoni: Which reminds of the guy who went to the dentist because his false teeth were disintegrating. The dentist took a close look at his plates and asked, "Do you eat a lot of Hollandaise Sauce?"

"My favorite. I use it every chance I get."

"There's your problem. That stuff if murder on false teeth."

"But I can't give it up."

"Then you'll have to have special dentures made of chrome."

"Are you sure that's necessary?"

"Positive. There's no plates like chrome for the Hollandaise."

May-04-14  technical draw: <Phony> Shall I puke now or later?
