Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: <technical draw> Actually, I'd like to ask you a question about Puerto Rico.

My research on the US Open has gotten up to the 1965 event which was held there. I see that the tournament was played in the Student Center of the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras, which Wikipedia tells me is a district of San Juan.

Would it be more correct to say the site was "San Juan" or "Rio Piedras"? The former is generally used, but I thought as long as I had an expert handy I might as well check.

Game Collection: US Open 1965, San Juan

May-04-14  Jim Bartle: How is the runner possibly out on this play?

http://m.mlb.com/video/v32578363/ny...

May-04-14  technical draw: <Phony> It's San Juan officially. Rio Piedras used to be a full fledged municipality until it united with San Juan, Therefore it became a barrio (extension) of San Juan. Other barrios include Santurce, Barrio Obrreo and Hato Rey.

However if an event takes place in Rio Piedras it's actually San Juan. Hope that helps.

  Phony Benoni: <td> Thanks.
May-04-14  Travis Bickle: Phony, I had to tell you this... I just played a blitz game where I had a Q & B against my opponent who had a K & a few lousy pawns. I run out of time before I can figure out the mate & he had 1.5 seconds left himself! AGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
May-04-14  technical draw: <Phony> The University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras was where I took my first year of college.

<Travis> I know the feeling, so AGHHHHHHHHH!

Phony Benoni: <JB> It's close, but he may have taken his right foot off the bag before pivoting backwards, and then missed the bad with his left foot. But it was definitely challenge-worthy.

By the way, they will never be able to get rid of the replay system now. Teams are coming with sponsors for the challenges.

Phony Benoni: Travis, I feel your pain. I once had an online game where I had a minute left, my opponent three seconds.

17 moves later, I lost on time.

Phony Benoni: Probably happens all over. Around here, the "Spirit of Detroit" statue is appropriately bedecked every time a local team makes the play-offs. Even gets a Lions jersey on occasion.

May-05-14  Jim Bartle: I think the runner had home stolen if the batter hadn't swung.
May-05-14  Travis Bickle: Yeah JB, I hear that base runner has amazing speed! He was on 1st base before the pitch was thrown home! ; P
May-05-14  Jim Bartle: Speaking of speed, has anyone seen this Cincinnati outfielder Billy Hamilton? Not sure if he can hit, but he's the fastest player I've ever seen.

Phony Benoni: Saw a couple of higlights Hamilton. He doesn't look that fast going down the line, but the burst over the last 10-15 feet is incredible.

WannaBe: SF Giants loses the game on a reviewed play at home, the ump called out, and after review, ruled safe. Pittsburgh wins 2-1.

My fellow bar mates are not too happy.

May-06-14  Jim Bartle: Posey clearly missed the tag on the hand, and the tag on the chest was too late. Safe.

  perfidious: <PB> Maybe so.

In the nineties, I too pulled off that move on a line drive, when pitching in a softball game. My right hand never went up so fast--dumb luck there was a ball in the webbing before I was aware I had caught it.

Phony Benoni: Church League slow-pitch softball represented the apex of my athletic ability. I was unable to hit, run, or field, but I could get the ball over the plate and thus became a pitcher. My usual strategy was to pitch low and inside and rely on my third baseman.

One day the ball got too close to the middle of the plate, and I received the same in the area of by belly button. (Thank Whomever, I wasn't pitching <that> low.) Fortunately I have always been well padded in that area, so the ball didn't roll too far away and I was able to throw the batter out before collapsing and losing my lunch.

Not to mention my appetite for even Church League slow-pitch softball.
