Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

The first and last catches are amazing.

  perfidious: <PB: But I wouldn't trust anyone but a Yastrzemski.>

He knew all the finesses, same as Carl Furillo playing right at Ebbets Field.

May-01-14  technical draw: <Shams:This is what a public lynching looks like:.> And shows horrible pictures of people really lynched.

From todays news source:

<It isn’t just the admittedly unlikeable Donald Sterling who is paying a heavy price for our society having to degenerated into a cringing herd of cowards unwilling to stand up to a possibly financially motivated lynch mob. >

Do you think they were actually going to get a rope?

Metaphors <Shams> metaphors.

May-01-14  Jim Bartle: The note in the Stark column about Fielder dropping a foul pop reminds me of a universally-ignored fact about Roger Clemens' 20-K game in 1986.

He would have had only 19 if Don Baylor had not dropped a pop foul.

And hey, how about those Tigers snookering the Rangers? Prince Fielder can't get a hit any more.

May-01-14  Jim Bartle: Speaking of the Prince, check out this photo:

May-01-14  Shams: <td> <Metaphors <Shams> metaphors.>

That's no excuse for bad metaphors. I found yours particularly ill-chosen, given the context. Sterling's actions and comments perfectly encapsulated the plantation mentality: hire blacks to do work that enriches you, then pretend you are doing so out of your largesse. Sleep with black women but discourage people in your circle from being seen in public with blacks.

<BTW remove that disgusting link. We are mature debaters not kids showing ugly pictures.>

Now you're asking me to self-censor? I thought either we had free speech or we don't.

---------

<Phony Benoni>, would you be so kind as to scroll back one page and delete my post that has caused such offense? Thank you.

And by the way your posts were superb. I would only add something that has not been mentioned yet on this page. The story has taken a Nixonian turn, and it is now alleged that not only did Sterling know he was being recorded, but that recording his conversations was his idea in the first place. While not excusing any unauthorized release of the audio, that fact (if true) does change things a bit.

Phony Benoni: <Shams> I took out the post with the link.

We don't have a large number of discussions like this around here. I don't mind as long as posters stick to arguing about the subject, not each other.

perfidious: <Jim> I was at Fenway for Clemens' masterpiece and had forgotten about Baylor's error.
May-01-14  technical draw: I don't know who I'm debating, if any. I think <Shams> is the contra and we were talking about a link leading to a dreadful lynching scene. And a make believe plantation mentality. Am I asking <Shams> to self censor? Yes, please. That's about it. I'm shelving the Sterling brouhaha because I think he will win in a court of law. I hope I don't offend anyone. My speech patterns get jumbled at times and it gets hard to understand my opinions .

Remember I have won the funniest kibitzer Caissar 7 years in a row. I have to make the transition and so far it doesn't look so good, but I'll keep trying.

May-01-14  Jim Bartle: <perfidious> <I was at Fenway for Clemens' masterpiece and had forgotten about Baylor's error.>

Must have been boring. Nobody hit the ball.

That really was impressive. But watching on tape, I think Kerry Wood's 20K game was even better. Too bad his arm wore out so soon.

Phony Benoni: Just your average, everyday 3-4-1 putout at first base. Nothing fancy.

And a little credit for the runner, who consciously avoided a collision at first.

perfidious: <Jim> All the runs came off HRs, in the seventh inning-Gorman Thomas (whose pop was dropped for the Baylor error)-then Dwight Evans with two on.

As you say, not much action.

perfidious: <PB> Had it all the way; the hitter never had a chance.
May-01-14  Jim Bartle: That play shows the value of always hustling. You can see the batter didn't run hard out of the box, and was "thrown" out by half a step.

But the second baseman went full speed when the ball was hit, even though it was unlikely he'd have to make a play.

May-02-14  TheFocus: I thought that asking <Shams> to delete that disgusting link was right. It really had no place here, or anywhere.

To refer to a public lynching, as <TD> did, was not to equalize to an actual lynching. There may be a better way to describe what happened, but I understand the reference.

May-02-14  Shams: Oh, spare me the pearl-clutching. It really wasn't a graphic photo. The brilliant American film "Mississippi Burning" is much more difficult to watch. I put my photo in the tough-but-fair category. People disagree, fine.

For the record, I despise sites like ogrish and what I call "torture-porn" movies as in the popular "Saw" series. You are what you take in, not just what you eat. I realize that.

May-02-14  technical draw: Another news item about Sterling:

<The defense treaty with the Philippines, like Obama’s bluster in Ukraine and Syria, is a sterling example of the first part of his doctrine.>

May-02-14  SugarDom: What if Sterling said don't bring whites?....
May-02-14  technical draw: Race relations is a strange thing. The Detroit Symphony selected musicians by the time honored hidden curtain, that means that the judges don't know what race or gender of the player is. Sounds fair right? Not in Detroit, Somebody noticed that there were no blacks in the orchestra. So they yelled racists! and the Detroit symphony folded. They hired a black bassoon player without an audition. The US is headed to towards perilous time.
May-02-14  Jim Bartle: Did you perhaps read about that on April 1?
May-02-14  technical draw: I visited the DSO site and full views show no black musicians, (However there is a picture of a black violist). Remember Detroit is almost 80% black. So why the disparity?
May-02-14  Jim Bartle: Ooh, nice deflection. You said there were protests and the Symphony folded.
May-02-14  technical draw: This whole DSO thing started when I mentioned the audition process of selecting musicians.

Now we can have true equality or we can count beans.

May-02-14  Jim Bartle: <Not in Detroit, Somebody noticed that there were no blacks in the orchestra. So they yelled racists! and the Detroit symphony folded. They hired a black bassoon player without an audition.>

This is what I think is the April Fools part.
