 | | OhioChessFan: I know fans of Dave Concepion and Gary Templeton thought that about Ozzie Smith and his diving stops that they'd make routinely. |
| Jun-01-14 | | Jim Bartle: Funny, I've never heard that. The shortstop who covered tons of ground without diving was Cal Ripken. He could play really deep because his arm was so strong. |

 | | Phony Benoni: I wonder if, especially when going to his right, a diving stop could be an advantage for a shortstop. If stays on his feet, he needs to stop and pivot before throwing, plus his momentum has carried him a step or two further awa from firsty. A diver has stopped his momentum, can be in throwing position when he hops up, and is probably closer to first base. So maybe there's more to "diving" than mere splash-and-dash. Or maybe not. Had I ever tried to play shortstop, I would nave given a whole new meaning to the name. |
| Jun-01-14 | | Jim Bartle: Some do the equivalent of a pop-up slide, going down to one knee, then popping up quickly to throw. |

 | | perfidious: <Jim> Ripken was tall for a SS as well and he knew how to play the hitters. Meant to mention while blathering on about Lansford: His play at third sounds like the signature Derek Jeter move at short, in which he appears to go deep in the hole for everything hit to that area. |
| Jun-01-14 | | Jim Bartle: Catchers really have changed this year, not blocking the plate until they have the ball: http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/638175... Compare that to Yeager on this play from the 1974 WS (and watch how Ferguson steals the ball from Wynn to make the throw): http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xkdv1l...

 | | Phony Benoni: Yeager's probably thinking, "Just my luck. it's Bando trying to score instead of Campaneris." I like how the new rule is working so far. Catchers seem to have adjusted, and runners will just have to learn how to slide creatively. More like baseball. |
| Jun-02-14 | | playground player: I love Ozzie Smith, but Cal Ripken Jr. and Ed Brinkman didn't get the credit they deserved as defensive shortstops because they made it look like no big deal. Ozzie could do back-flips, though. |

 | | perfidious: <pgp> Alan Trammell was not in the class of Smith defensively, but he was also purty durn decent. Saw a fair amount of his play way back when. It is a travesty that he has not made Cooperstown so far, but I've a feeling playing in Ripken's rather long shadow has diminished his accomplishments in the eyes of HOF voters. |
| Jun-02-14 | | Jim Bartle: Talking about fielding, what about Omar Vizquel? |

 | | perfidious: <Jim> Pas mal. (wink) |

| Jun-03-14 | | crawfb5: Donaldson has two Zemgalis games from the 1966 US Open in Seattle (draw with Formanek and a win against Herbers). Let me know if you want them. |

 | | perfidious: Mets set record of dubious value in an early visit to Philly, that of most cheese steak sandwiches consumed while engaged in other pursuits: <There are many, many, many perks to being a big leaguer, and apparently one of those perks is getting free cheesesteaks whenever you visit Philadelphia.> http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on... It seems that April visit has raised the bar for such performances. Would-be aspirants to the kings' new throne, beware! |

 | | Phony Benoni: OK. This may be the ultimate. The state softball championship is decided on a walk-off strikeout. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/... Just imagine playing championship level ball all season long, then, losing like that. |
| Jun-04-14 | | Jim Bartle: The guys on "Pardon the Interruption" were marveling at that play. Wilbon said you could expect anything at that level. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Just in case you think it's dangerous to go to games in Detroit, we've got your covered: http://wapc.mlb.com/cutfour/2014/06... |
| Jun-04-14 | | Jim Bartle: That's great! I remember a similar report for USC pitcher Dave Kingman. Too bad Detroit is in the DH league. RC could crowd the plate tighter than Frank Robinson. |
| Jun-04-14 | | Jim Bartle: Holy Cow! WGN has abandoned the Cubs. |

 | | WannaBe: 90 year marriage, WGN pulled out due to Cubs losing and loss of revenue. http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/stor... Also Don Zimmer past away. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/1... |
| Jun-04-14 | | Jim Bartle: Oh man, Zimmer died? 66 years in pro baseball. I watched him play an agile second base. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Just looking over Zimmer's record.
http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...
Wasn't aware he had been out of the dugout since 2006; I had thought he was still around somewhere. Managed two teams he had played for. Was associated with all four "New York" teams, being a coach for the Giants in 1987. Probably has no chance for the Hall of Fame. Neither his playing nor managerial careers were sufficienct, and coaches get no respect. If he'd tried broadcasting instead, he might have been a contender. Maybe we need a category for Good People. Baseball needs them. |
| Jun-04-14 | | Jim Bartle: Wow. Dodgers got Perranoski for Zimmer. That's Foster-for-Duffy territory. |
Jun-04-14
 | | WannaBe: I'm not sure how to classify/qualify this, but one of the memory of Don that I have, was him being pushed by Pedro Martinez in that BoSox-Yankees scuffle... |
| Jun-04-14 | | Jim Bartle: Except Martinez was really defending himself from the on-charging Zimmer. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AsuYIN... |
