| Jun-16-14 | | YouRang: Gwynn believed his cancer resulted from chewing tobacco. |
| Jun-17-14 | | playground player: 3,200+ hits, .338 lifetime average over 20 seasons (.338!)... Tony Gwynn forever. |
| Jun-17-14 | | Jim Bartle: I heard Gwynn batted .300 against 15 Cy Young winners, and .400 against 8 of them. |
Jun-17-14
 | | WannaBe: <JB> So, the other 7 held Gwynn to .200? =)) |
| Jun-17-14 | | Jim Bartle: Under .300 at least.
Years ago Greg Maddux was saying that major league pitchers just can't pick up changes in thre speed of pitches, and that was how he kept them off balance. "Except that damn Tony Gwynn." |

 | | Phony Benoni: Maddux was one of the .400 guys:
http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... By the way, have you seen the Google search screen today? Hilarious. |
| Jun-17-14 | | Jim Bartle: Hideo Nomo appears to be victim number one (.560) among those who faced Gwynn more than 20 times. |
| Jun-17-14 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, here's an article on Michael Jordan... The Greatest Basketball Player of all Time! ; P http://www.csnne.com/boston-celtics... |
Jun-17-14
 | | WannaBe: <JB> We still talking about Cy Young Winners? Becasue Nomo won Rookie, but never Cy Young. |
| Jun-17-14 | | Jim Bartle: No, I meant the entire list. |
Jun-17-14
 | | WannaBe: I blame this all on <Travis Bickle> http://news.yahoo.com/nuns-sue-stri... |
Jun-17-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Travis, I stopped reading the article after he misspelled Bill Laimbeer's name. How can such an idiot be taken seriously? But I wil say the Spurs are the kind of team I can root for. |
Jun-17-14
 | | WannaBe: If I stand between fair and foul, say third base line, on a pop up, the ball hit my glove and I drop it is it fair or foul? Does it matter if I am beyond third base or in front of it? (Like a batted ball, fair or foul?) Does it matter if the dropped ball lands in fair/foul territory? The reason for this question, is because ChiSox-SF game, Sox had bases loaded, one out, batter hits a sky high pop up. Home plate ump immediately called infield fly rule, if the ball is fair. Of course, if its foul, Giants want it to be caught. So, if the third baseman or first baseman just happens to be standing on the line, what is the call? |
| Jun-17-14 | | Jim Bartle: You made it past the misspelled "Isiah"?
I said forget it when I read, "Up until MJ took over the NBA in the 1990s, pro basketball had been a team game." What a load of manure. |
| Jun-17-14 | | Jim Bartle: In any position, fair or foul on a fly ball is determined by the position of the glove when the ball touches it. |
Jun-17-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Rule 2.00 actually says the relative position of the ball and the foul line, but surely that amounts to the same thing as the "glove" rule. Change <WannaBe>'s scenario a little: Bottom of the ninth, winning run on third, less than two out. Batter hits a deep fly ball to right near the foul line. If the ball is foul the fielder will let it drop, since he has no chance of throwing out the runner at the plate. If it's fair, he would not be allowed to deflect it foul. There's no Hail Mary in baseball. |
| Jun-17-14 | | Jim Bartle: In the sixth game of the 1975 Series, the Sox had the bases loaded with no outs when Lynn hit a medium foul fly which Foster caught and threw Denny Doyle out at the plate. It was a good throw by a not-great outfielder, and it worked. And had Doyle scored, it would not have become one of the all-time great games. But even though the announcers never mentioned it (Tim McCarver would have analyzed it in detail), I think the best play would have been to let the ball drop foul. |
Jun-17-14
 | | Phony Benoni: On the other hand, with Fred Lynn hitting, you might want to take a risk to retire him. |
| Jun-18-14 | | Jim Bartle: Yes, a very tough choice, especially since Lynn had already hit a home run. Plus it wasn't easy for Foster to know the ball was foul. What made the throw really hard was he was throwing right down the line over the runner, but he got him by plenty. |
Jun-18-14
 | | Phony Benoni: And that's what makes such games great. Even the best players do more than you expect of them. |
| Jun-18-14 | | Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: Travis, I stopped reading the article after he misspelled Bill Laimbeer's name. How can such an idiot be taken seriously?
But I wil say the Spurs are the kind of team I can root for.> Laimbeer played basketball?? I thought he was in the WWE the rotten dirty coward. I'd like to see that chicken sh*% Laimbeer try those dirty flagrant fouls on a guy like Dick Butkus, & Bill would he'd get his nose broken & his teeth knocked out! P.S. Yeah I know Butkus played football so save the sarcasm... |
| Jun-18-14 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle: You made it past the misspelled "Isiah"?
I said forget it when I read, "Up until MJ took over the NBA in the 1990s, pro basketball had been a team game." What a load of manure.> Shut up Bartle! What do you know about sports except 1950's baseball! http://youtu.be/sUz3ZYfoNxo |
| Jun-18-14 | | Travis Bickle: Jordan was a great Champion because he would not be denied a victory! These are just his dunks! http://youtu.be/jHOzvqqyxow |
| Jun-18-14 | | Jim Bartle: What are you complaining about? I'm saying the Bulls played team-first ball, including Jordan. |
Jun-18-14
 | | perfidious: Watching Butkus attempt to lumber up and down the floor would have had amusement potential before his knees gave out. The author also managed to spell Wilkes' forename with one less 'a' than the man uses. |
