 | | WannaBe: Anyone following/knows about this Jimmy Graham thing? http://bleacherreport.com/articles/... |
|
| Jun-18-14 | | Jim Bartle: That's fascinating. How do you define whether a player is a tight end or a wide receiver on any given play? It's a matter of perception. Say he's lined up two yards wide of the tackle. Three yards. Four yards. |
|
| Jun-18-14 | | Jim Bartle: I was complaining about a rightfielder not hustling because he thought he wasn't part of a play. Look at this amazing play by Sox centerfielder Brock Holt, who hustles even on a routine fly to left. http://m.mlb.com/video/v33800329/mi... |

 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> I figured you would find that play! |
|
| Jun-18-14 | | Jim Bartle: But great hustle, right?
I heard Scherzer threw 51 pitches in one inning. How does that happen? And I guess when it goes bad, it really goes bad. Tigers had the bases loaded, wild pitch straight to the screen, bounces straight back to KC catcher in less than a second, nails the runner at third. |
|
Jun-18-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Ever since that fiasco with the Zuma outfits, the Tigers are 9-20 and have fallen 1 1/2 games behind KC. Their luck has completely deserted them. Today, KC's decisive run scored when an easy bounder up the middle hit second base and skipped into the outfield. In his last outing, Scherzer pitched his first ever complete game, a three-hit shutout. Yesterday, he gives up 10 runs and 10 hits in four innings. Maybe complete games are over-rated. KC red hot right now; ten wins in a row. |
|
Jun-18-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Soon after Jim Leyland began his tenure with the Tigers, the team went into a lackadaisical funk. He closed the clubhouse door and, being careful to use no words found in Webster's Unabridged, advised them that such behavior would not tolerated. It worked.
So how does rookie Tigers manager Brad Ausmus handle a similar situation? Can you spell Faux Pas? http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on... |
|
| Jun-18-14 | | Jim Bartle: Ooh, not good.
Does sound as if the team is snakebit at the moment. Ball hitting the base? A pitch so high and wild it bounces right back to the catcher? |

Jun-19-14
 | | perfidious: Nice little effort by Clayton Kershaw last night; but one error from perfection and fifteen strikeouts into the bargain. |
|
Jun-19-14
 | | WannaBe: Dodgers have thrown 2 no-nos this year. =) |
|
| Jun-19-14 | | Jim Bartle: Bad error from Ramirez.
I watched highlights of Tanaka's win last night. I don't remember seeing batters swing at more bad pitches. Almost every strikeout was on a bad pitch. I heard one player say that the spin on his fastball and splitter looks exactly the same. That's why they're swinging on pitches in the dirt. |
|

 | | Phony Benoni: Elias lists six other would-be perfect games from the last 100 years marred only by errors: Walter Johanson: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... (error by Bucky Harris in the 7th) [Not only Johnson's only no-hitter, but the first by any Washington pitcher in any league dating back to 1871] Bill McCahan:
http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... (error by Ferris Fain in the 2nd) Dick Bosman:
http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... (error by Bosman in the 4th) Jerry Reuss:
http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... (error by Bill Russell in the 1st) Terry Mulholland: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... (Charlie Hayes in the 7th) Jonathan Sanchez: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... (error by Juan Uribe in the 8th) I've also found a box score and account of Nap Rucker's 14 K, no walk no-hitter on September 5, 1908. Three errors by the Dodgers in this one. http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/l... |

 | | perfidious: <PB> Fain had a curious career: consecutive batting titles near the end of his days as a regular, though he was otherwise not much of an average hitter and had little power, but drew a lot of walks for that era. IIRC, he was a very good defensive first baseman. |
|
| Jun-19-14 | | Jim Bartle: Back in, say, the 70s or before, but especially before the 60s, batting average was considered the primary number to value a hitter. So guys like Fain and maybe Mickey Vernon and Gene Woodling were overrated. A later example might be Bill Madlock. |
|
Jun-19-14
 | | WannaBe: Interesting stat, Jacobs/Progressive Field, have the most walk-off homers in all MLB. Since that park opened. http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/recap... |
|
Jun-19-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Interesting character Mr. Fain. Definitely Hollywood material. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferris...
He was an individualist who did what he wanted and was not popular with his teammates. A combination of a hot temper and a drinking problem often led to on- and off-the-field injuries. It's interesting that his two batting tiles--1951 and 1952--occurred after his first manager, Connie Mack, finally retired. In later life, he went to pot. |

 | | WannaBe: Anyone here know much about Moe Berg? Or read the book?? He supposedly had 7 identical suits... But that's not the most interesting thing about him... |
|
| Jun-19-14 | | Jim Bartle: Wasn't he a spy? |
|
Jun-19-14
 | | WannaBe: Yes!!! The book is http://www.amazon.com/The-Catcher-W... |

Jun-19-14
 | | WannaBe: I like that third to last paragraph:
http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/1... <"When he strikes out swinging," his old hitting coach, Merv Rettenmund, once told me, "the pitcher's shocked. He's shocked. Everybody in the stadium is shocked. He's the best hitter I've seen in 35 years."> So, Merv, what <DO> you tell Tony Gwynn as a hitting coach? Choke up a millimeter? Open your stance just another 1/16 inch? Put another 1/64 oz more pine tar on your bat handle? =))
This is like Pat Riley coaching Magic Johnson, what do you tell him? Pass the ball more? |
|
Jun-19-14
 | | Phony Benoni: You don't tell Tony Gwynn anything. You ask him about what to say to the other guys. |
|
Jun-19-14
 | | WannaBe: Just found out, that MLB 10.22(a) is also known as Tony Gwynn Rule... |
