Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Jul-12-14  Jim Bartle: There's a famous World Series play where the batter/runner slides under the tag, then jumps up and runs to first. Can't remember who or when.

Phony Benoni: Jay gets full points for that one, but what was the third baseman thinking? Easy out at third. And isn't the catcher supposed to alert the fielder about which base to throw to?
Jul-12-14  sachistu: Hi! just FYI... in the game Wolbrecht-Jefferson (WCA-ch, 1914) there is a typo in the score. Black's 17th should be ...Bh5 (not Bf5(??)). My copy of American Chess Bulletin(1914)gives ...Bh5 (actually B-R4 in ACB). Great collection of early US Open events! Thx!

Phony Benoni: <sachistu> Thanks for catching this. Correcting games in our database can be difficult, but at least I can correct my own records.

More importantly, that was one of three games in the database that had "Wolbrecht" spelled "Wohlbrecht". That can get corrected quickly, and I'm glad you came across it.

Phony Benoni: Little history for the Giants today. Starting pitcher (Baumgarten) and catcher (Posey) both hit grand slams.

Supposedly never happened before, which is a surprise to me.

  WannaBe: Some useless information (department)...

Today, Giants had both the pitcher and catcher hitting Grand Slam in the game vs Arizona. This the first time the battery mates have done this in the same game.

This is also Bumgardner's second career Slam, matching Tony Cloninger as the only pitcher with two. (I can't find a pitcher with 3 GSs, so I am taking it for granted, that no pitcher have hit 3)

The funny thing about Tony's 2 GSs, they happened in one game, <AGAINST THE GIANTS!!> on July 3rd, 1966 at Candlestick! Atlanta Braves won 17-3 (good football score).

Some other GS trivia...

In AL, the single season record for GS hit is 6, Don Mattingly and Travis Hafner. Well, the weird thing is, that is all the GSs Don ever hit. Never before or after.

(Could also explain why Dodgers can't score any runs... Don is still waiting for that next GS.)

In NL, (my favourite bit of trivia), Chan (Hooooooo That's going out) Park have a record that will never, ever, be broken, he gave up 2 GSs in the same inning, <TO THE SAME BATTER>.

(So I am guessing 8 RBIs in one inning is also a record... 'less someone comes to the plate 3 times.)

That, will never, ever, ever, be broken, I would be very surprised, if some 'lucky' pitcher ties that (dubious) record.

WannaBe: I don't know what the 7 day weather forecast for Minneapolis is, if HR Derby does not happen today, will All-Star game be pushed back to Wednesday?

Every team is scheduled to resume play Friday, so you do have 2 days free in case Mother Nature does not cooperate.

I listened to that game while watering our garden.

This is a sign that the HR Derby should be allowed to die a dignified death. It's just boring and artificial.

I'd like to see a "fastest to third base" contest. With weight classes, so Prince Fielder can compete.

Or best throw to third or home from right or center. The throw would have to arrive in a certain number of seconds, and each contestant would decide exactly how deep he'd like to throw from. A little strategy.

As far as I'm concerned there's nothing as exciting in baseball as a strong throw from the outfield.

Phony Benoni: If the All-Star game ends in a tie, maybe they could have a Home RUn Derby to decide home field advantage. Works in soccer.

perfidious: We could all get a hoot from behemoths such as Fielder attempting to lay down bunts, as we bet the O/U on the number of feet by which they would be out as they lumbered down the line towards first.
Jul-15-14  sachistu: re: WCA-ch 1914... glad to help. I know what you mean about the difficulty in correcting games at the site. However, if you are looking for more games for your collection from the US Open, I have these... 1955 (317) 1958 (179 1959 (208) and 1960 (196).
