| Jul-16-14 | | playground player: <Esteemed Baseball Connoisseurs> Did you hear about the fan who's suing ESPN and the Yankees for "defaming" him while he was snoozing in the stands? My blog post contains a link that includes the audio/video of the actual telecast. http://leeduigon.com
This bozo wants 10 million smackers--easy money. I mean, it'd take a lifetime to earn that much if you had to work for it... |

 | | Phony Benoni: <playgroundplayer> That came up earlier. If the guy was really upset about being ridiculed, he should have just kept quiet for a bit. Somebody else would have done something stupid, and he would have been forgotten. Now, instead of being joked about, he is despised as well. Of course, maybe he just didn't want to be forgotten. But I don't know why they picked on him. It was a Yankees - Red Sox game. They go on so long that everybody falls asleep sooner or later. Maybe he got the treatment because he reminded the announcers of this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zls... |
|
| Jul-16-14 | | Jim Bartle: The guy, or his lawyer, confused what the announcers said on air, and the comments posted on the Internet where the clip was posted. |

| Jul-16-14 | | Travis Bickle: Phony, doesn't anybody like to talk football on this forum? http://blacksportsonline.com/home/w... |
|
Jul-16-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Travis, we don't have to worry about football any more. The World Cup is over. |
|
| Jul-17-14 | | Travis Bickle: I think you know what kinda football I'm talkin' about Mr Detroit! ; P http://profootballzone.com/wp-conte... |

| Jul-17-14 | | Shams: The Mariners are in a bit of an unusual position this year; namely, it's July and they aren't an afterthought already. Of course this means there are trade rumors; I won't bore people with the details but the big debate is whether to move prospects RHP Taijuan Walker (great stuff, shaky command) and/or power-hitting rightie D.J. Peterson. Peterson took a fastball to the jaw a year or two ago, with predictable consequences. Hearing him talk about it on the radio got me to thinking-- why don't batters wear full helmets? Granted, head shots are rare, but they're so dangerous when they do happen that I'd have to think the ever-present fear of getting beaned would cause hitters to perform a little worse at the plate. It would not be hard to design a helmet that gave full face, chin and head protection without impairing vision. So why hasn't it happened? If I were a batter it'd be a no-brainer; I'd want all my focus where it belonged. |

 | | WannaBe: Oakland A's had a third baseman, for the life of me I can't think of his name, this was during the late 80s time period. His batting helmet, one side, instead of the flap stopping below the ear, it was extended to protect his chin and jaw. For the life of me I wish I can search for a picture and post a link... |

| Jul-17-14 | | Shams: <WannaBe> Good find. That helmet looks like it protects his nose more than his chin, but maybe that's just when the picture was taken-- mid swing, head inclined. |

 | | WannaBe: Remember the days when Rams/Angels, Vikings/Twins, Oilers/Astros, 49ers/Giants, Seahawks/Mariners and other pairs that shared a stadium? Now there is only 1 stadium that is dual foot/base ball. Hockey/basketball continues to share home arenas... |

 | | Phony Benoni: Well, Travis, about five years ago some of us baseball fans were criticized for "off-topic" discussions in the Kibitzers Café. I invited everyone over here, and haven't had a moment's peace since. So during the blessed couple of months when nobody else is active, we're likely to have Baseball on the Brain. Norhing against American football. Its day will come. And maybe, just maybe, the Bears' day as well. (The Lions, I fear are doomed to eternity in the Twilight Zone.) |

| Jul-17-14 | | Jim Bartle: <Remember the days when Rams/Angels, Vikings/Twins, Oilers/Astros, 49ers/Giants, Seahawks/Mariners and other pairs that shared a stadium?> I remember Rams/Dodgers at the Coliseum for three years. It was pretty comical for baseball. |

But some free chips or an occasional pizza or two wouldn't hurt, either...) 6 more weeks, when NCAA & NFL gets going, we'd be doing serious yakkin' here, trash talkin' includ'd!!! |

 | | Phony Benoni: Local weatherman was explaining why baseballs travel further in hot, humid weather. It seems that humid air is actually <lighter> than dry air, because it contains relatively more hydrogen and less nitrogen. It's also his contention that breaking balls don't move as sharply in hot, humid weather. The torque of a curve ball is affected by air resistance. Lighter air, less resistance, less torque.. Sounds ridiculous, but this is the weatherman. I can remember whole days when he was right. |
|
| Jul-18-14 | | Jim Bartle: Breaking balls definitely do not break as sharply in Denver, where the air is lighter. Not sure about the humid part. What I don't understand is why pitchers don't seem to throw harder fastballs at high altitude. You can certainly serve tennis balls a lot harder, so why not thrown balls. |
|
Jul-18-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Perhaps because the action is based strictly in the human arm, rather than using a mechanical aid such as a racket or bat? |
|
| Jul-18-14 | | Jim Bartle: Must be. I could serve about 25% harder at 10,000 ft., using new balls. In fact to be able to play at all reasonably we had to play with balls which had been out of the can two months or so, |
|
Jul-18-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Are professional tennis tournaments played at high elevations? |
|
| Jul-18-14 | | Jim Bartle: Not that I know of. Maybe in Denver sometimes.
There are balls made for high altitude, but for about 5,000 ft., not higher. |
|
| Jul-18-14 | | shivasuri4: http://www.rogerfedererfans.com/for... The Mutua Madrid Open is played at an altitude of over 2000 feet. |
|
| Jul-18-14 | | Jim Bartle: There's a minor tournament in La Paz, Bolivia, at over 12,000 ft. I don't know what sort of balls they use. |
